Two Shakhtar defenders will be scouted tomorrow

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona is interested in Shakhtar Donetsk right back defender and Croatian international Darijo Srna (27) and Shakhtar Donetsk central defender and Ukrainian international Dmytro Chygrynskiy (22 - picture).

A Barcelona scout will be present at the World cup qualifier Croata-Ukraine on Saturday to watch both players in action.

Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola would like both players after having seen them play during the Champions League games against Shakhtar last year.

Srna, whose contract with Shakhtar expires in 2011, would be delighted about the possibility to join Barcelona but despite the promise of Shaktar president Rinat Akhmetov to let the Croatian player go if a big club shows interest (read more here), the player's agent Damir Stimac thinks a transfer will be difficult, also because of the high salary Srna receives in Ukraine.

Any one have more idea about these two players? whether they are Barca materials?

Chygrynskij is a fabulous centre half, he could easily become better than Vidic.

Srna is something like Dani Alves, but not as technically skilled.
I don't think he would be a good asset to Barça since he plays in the exact same position as Alves, and using him as a left back wouldn't be any better than using e.g. Puyol as a left back.
One correction, player's agent isn't Damir Stimac, but Igor Stimac, once Croatian's great defender.

I'm just quoting EMD, Richard, who says that Damir (who is the brother of Igor) is Srna's agent. If someone has other (reliable) information on that, I can put a note there.

It is Damir....I know because I live in Slovenia, but I am from Croatia and I know all abot Croatian football....

Srna...he can cover Dani Alves, or play on wing position on the right...he can be also left back defender....he has great crossing, he is very good for free-kicks (to cross or shoot) and penalties...and corner kicks....I think he could play very well for Barcelona....he is player with pasion and he goes in every game with 120%....that is why I admire him...

The other player I do not know, but he played very well in Uefa Cupa final...he is only 22 and already has at least 4 seasons of first team play....I think he is better and will be a lot better than Casseres

Srna is a good player. I watched him when Shaktar won the Euro Cup Final. I don't think he will be cheap though. I am not sure he will accept a bench role considering he is currently starting for Shaktar. I believe we are close to securing Felipe for LB.

...kick them and bring fanni for the right, who's better than both together...

srna is impressive. dunno about the other guy, but srna can be a great attacking fullback on the left as well as the right. we dont have good cover for alves, and if anything happens to him, were dead, so srna would be good. he is also a good leader on the field

Srna is amazing and very versatile, he is like Lahm, only better, and has a fantastic shot. Get him as soon as possible and everybody will be happy.

YEEES!!!! I told you guys about chygrinskij!! He f**king rules the field! awesome right foot, he and Piqué would be the new (improved) Ferdinand/Vidic 's !!! I pray that Txiki will get this one!!!

Two great players but I can't see the reason to buy them.

Srna is a rightback and wouldn't get much playtime, he also have a HUGE wage at Shakhtar and would probably have to take a paycut.

Puyol, Piqué, Marquez, Milito, Henrique, Caceres and now Chrgyinsky. Do we really need 7 centrebacks?

...to insideknowledge...where are you our fellow cule...do you have something new for us?...would be cool to hear from you...

Simon: His name is Chygrynskij, not Chrgynsky. He is fantastic, easily top 5 young central defender in the world.

Yep, it's Damir. Sorry about that :)

@Anony

If we are aiming for factual accuracy on this blog:

I guess his name is transliterated from the Ukranian Cyrillic alphabet, so either neither "Chygrynskij" nor "Chrgynsky" is actually right.

The only "correct way to spell it is "Чигри́нський".

Wikipedia has his name as "Chyhrynskyi", and Shakhtar's official website says "Chygrynskyy".

Personally I like "Chigrinsky", much easier.

Wake up people, lecture over. ;)

Turning from linguistics to football:

The thing with centre backs is you really have to see how they perform over the season, against different opposition. Take the CL final - everyone said before how good Vidic is, but after the final it seems he can only defend against high balls, corners and big centre forwards, not technically talented attackers. The truth is somewhere in between.

As for these guys, I haven't seen enough of them to comment if they would be good enough to cope with the technically superior players found in the Spanish league. Srna seems surplus to requirements though if Saltor's coming in. Any Ukrainian culers seen Chygrynskij game in game out this season?
