Barça – Sporting Gijón: The joy starts now!

Barça – Sporting Gijón:

The Joy starts now!

The knights of El Molinón stadium, the oldest professional football field in Spain will introduce the new season for the most recent champions at the Camp nou. A new adventure begins now. Get ready, and enjoy the journey.

Yet, If we look back in time, it seems like August 2008 was centuries ago, as the team achievements broke the limitations of time. In one year, this team achieved what all liga clubs failed to come close to since ever. We kick off with a different mindset, and different expectations.

One year ago, we approached the league after a summer that was full of storms.

We changed the coach, the players, and almost blew the board of directors. Now we enter the new season as the crowned Champions of Spain and Europe, while our main rivals changed the coach, players, and board of directors.

One year ago, we had to swallow the pride after watching the players standing in two lines congratulating the rivals for winning a title, We enter this season with the sweet sweet memories of a 2-6 win against Madrid, a 2-0 against Man Utd, two super cups, and lot of YouTube moments.

We started the last season badly. One of the worst starts in the club history. How are we going to start this one?

The opponent: Sporting Gijon.

One of the most interesting teams last season, Conceding 79 goals they won the worst defence award in the liga, followed by Numancia (69 goals). In 38 games, they lost 23, again, only matched by the relegated Numancia. But while Numancia sank to the second division without a trace, Gijon finished the season parking in the 14th slot. How come? Listen to this one Benitez: While Numancia won 10 games and drew 5; Gijon the anti-draw team drew only once in 38 games and won 14 games. Gijon survived because they did what Liverpool failed to do to win their league, they took risks. They played to win, not to avoid losing.

Yet, Manolo Preciado had to live with lot of critics from the Gijon supporters for suffering heavy defeats in the previous season by running unnecessary risks. The managerial situation in the club is not stable as well.

Regarding Squad reinforcements, They added Grégory and our own Botía to strengthen their defence, but still there is a need for a right back to compete with Sastre. Their left back Canella was one of the notable performers in the league last season, and there were lot of talks that he may move to a bigger club.

In the midfield Rivera is a player they have lot of hopes he will orchestrate the midfield for next season, but it seems that he wasn’t that convincing so far during preseason games. They added De las Cuevas as well from Atletico, who may prove a great support to help the team fighting for survival.

Bilic the Croatian striker, known for his incredible work rate, scored 12 goals for the team last season, but his future with the club is uncertain. Gijon also has the likes of Míchel, Barral and Maldonado to complete a decent squad for the following season.

But they will not start their season this week, this week they will pack the three points and hand it to Barcelona. Is it Overconfidence? Yes. But we, Barcelona, know that we can’t afford losing this one, nor we can accept a draw.

The Dear ones: Barcelona

It’s still unclear who will start this game for Barcelona. Lot of variables will effect pep decisions. The trip to Monaco was not a joy. Who is completely fit for the game? Yaya and Henry suffered some bad knocks in that game, are they completely recovered? What about Iniesta? Xavi fitness level is also a question.

My predicted start up:

Valdes, Alves, Puyol, Pique, Maxwell, Yaya, Keita, Xavi, Henry, Ibra, Pedro.

Gijon will have one striker and two roaming midfielders. It’s a waste of resources to have Abidal in the selection to act as a third centre back for this game. If we want a secure start, Keita can act as a holding Midfielder beside Yaya at the beginning while Maxwell and Alves contribute offensively. Then based on the opponent performance we switch the gear up. Keita presence in the midfield with Yaya helps Xavi to save some calories as they cover lot of space and position themselves perfectly creating outlets and breaking down opponents Offense. Keita also proved being a needed cover on the left for Maxwell by synchronizing with him so they both contribute offensively without risking the defensive tasks. Only if Yaya or Keita are not available, Busquets will start.

Regarding Iniesta, if he is completely fit for the game, I would have picked him to play on the right wing where we will miss Messi. But Pedro moral is something we need to get advantage of. It may prove being an opportunity for this young boy to achieve his complete transition to the first team as a reliable option to count on. Besides, it will be better to keep Iniesta on the bench as a game changer. His fitness level may not serve him to play ninety minutes anyway, so it’s better to wait till the second half, and analyse if Henry, Keita, or Xavi need rest or if we need more support on the right flank in case the result was not satisfying.

Ibra will be the player to watch. Will he score his first goal? Will he gel fast or not? Some of a zillion questions that he will not answer-all at once-in this game. Though, we can expect slight improvement. He will need the time to adapt. I think it will also be good that he switch positions with Henry more often during the game. He likes spaces and on the left he can find it. We bought him as a striker, no doubt. But during the adaptation period it’s important to generate the most effective performance possible to gain the feeling of the game, and to release some pressure. Pulling his marker out of the box while Henry slotting in, will increase our threat. I have a feeling that he will score in this game. Not a prediction, just a Pep kind of feeling…

It’s my first preview since a while and I am little rusty. Let’s hope Barca4Life sort out his Real-Life commitments soon. Or else you will need to live with the drop of Previews quality for a while.

I leave you with the highlights of the last game we played against Gijon last season.

Enjoy the game!

To the point with Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola is hoping his side can start off this season how they finished their last - winning trophies.

The Treble Winners of last year-Barcelona, are going head to head with Bilbao for what could possibly be their first trophy in this years campaign since their unlucky defeat against Manchester City for the Gamper.

"To start the year with a title would be very positive," Guardiola said. Walking into the pitch with a 1 goal lead against Bilbao is not enough for "El Mister." He wants absolute effort. "They will come out to pressure us and we will have to be careful - I want the maximum application and effort from my players." "And of course we will go out and attack."

Pep will be without Iniesta and Marquez, who are still on the road to recovery from their injuries. On the other hand, Pep is counting on Marc Muniesa, Jeffren Suarez, Jonathon dos Santos and Andreu Fontas, who all have been named in the squad to face Athletic. After this match, Barcelona face Shakhtar Donetsk in the European Super Cup in Monaco next Friday, August 28th.

Meanwhile lets take a look at Joaquin Caparros' side. Athletic de Bilbao took the lead in the first leg in Bilbao last weekend, but eventually lost 2-1 with a fear shot from Pedro. The Basques then defeated Norwegian side Tromso 3-2 in a Europa League qualifying-round first leg on Thursday night.

And with next Thursday's trip to Scandinavia very much in mind, Caparros is likely to name a weakened side on Sunday, thus meaning Barcelona could take the upper hand in this game. Aitor Ocio and Fernando Amorebieta are both carrying knocks and will possible not be risked, while Fran Yeste, Mikel Susaeta, Javi Martinez, Iker Muniain and Oscar de Marcos have also resided in Bilbao. Spain striker Fernando Llorente has travelled to Barcelona, but is likely to be left on the bench. Summer signing Inigo Diaz de Cerio looks set to make his debut up front.

Athletic de Bilbao boss Caparros sees this game far from their reach. "The probabilities are small, but I've seen everything in football," he said.
"We'll go there, try to play a good game and see what happens."

The game is scheduled to be played at 22:00 hours local Barcelona time. To know when the game will be aired in your place of residence please visit

Barcelona2010

Preview: Athletic Bilbao

Venue : Camp Nou, Barcelona

The Spanish Super Cup concludes on Sunday with the second leg of the two legged affair between the Treble winners and the beaten Copa del Rey finalists. These two teams are probably sick of each other by now having met late last season in the Cup final and already early this season in the first leg of this final.

Bilbao have it all to do as they surrendered a half time lead at the San Mames to go down by two goals to one to Barca. The damage is double as Barca have 2 away goals and can now approach the game with a much more comfort knowing that a draw will be good enough for them to claim their 8th Spanish Super Cup drawling level with Real Madrid in the process.

PREVIOUS GAME

Barcelona followed up their first leg victory over Bilbao with the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Manchester City. Despite dominating the game and hitting the post twice Barcelona went down by 1 goal to 0. What made the performance all the more impressive was that the team was missing missing midfield generals Xavi and Iniesta and youngsters like Jonathan Dos Santos Thiago and Gai were able to step in and add creativity and flair to the performance. The team had more than 20 shots while City had less than 5 and also dominated in terms of possesion and corners of which they had 15 to City's 2. Barcelona will take a lot of positives from that performance and should be high on confidence going into the 2nd leg.

Athletic Bilbao Meanwhile took part in the UEFA Europa league qualifying round midweek and came away with another close win against opposition from a smaller league. They had to rely on two late goals from De Marcos and Llorente to beat Norway's Tromso IL by 3 goals to 2. Not exactly the most inspiring of performances again from Bilbao who have struggled against opposition from a smaller leagues in their attempts to qualify for the new verion of the UEFA Cup, the Europa League. Bilbao will take some positives from winning the game but given their shaky start to the pre-season they will have to lift their game significantly if they are to get anything from the Camp Nou.

THE KEY MEN

Ibrahimovic vs Iraizoz

Barcelona's marquee summer signing is expected to make his official debut in the second leg after coach Pep Guardiola said "I think he's ready to play an official game." Ibrahimovic made his Barcelona debut in the midweek friendly and showed a few glimses of the form that has made him one of the most feared strikers on the planet. He is still lacking match fitness however and will need time on the pitch with Messi ,Xavi, Iniesta and Henry before he can show the world what he can do with some of the best creative players in the world behind him. One thing is for certain the era of Ibra has arrived, whether it will be as succesful as the Rijkaard/Ronaldinho/Etoo era will be determined over the course of the next 5 years.

If Athletic Bilbao are to get a positive result in the Camp Nou they will need more than likely to keep a clean sheet. The man charged with that difficult task is first choice goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz. Iraizoz is on his second stint with the club having begun his career there. Wanting to get more first team football he moved to Espanol where he was a part of the team that won the Copa del Rey in 2006 and was instrumental to Espanol reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2007.

He played in the final against Sevilla that Espanol lost on penalties despite Dani Alves missing one penalty. Iraizoz moved back to Athletic in 07/08 as the number one goalkeeper but suffered an injury that limited him to just 13 league games. Last season Iraizoz resumed goalkeeping duties at Bilbao and had his work cut out as the team struggled to 13th spot in La Liga and conceeded 60 goals. It could have been so much worse had Irazoz not made his 104 saves in 36 games. Expect Iraizoz, who is fluent in Catalan from his time at Espanol, to have a busy night on Sunday.

FORMATIONS AND TACTICS

Athletic used a 4-4-2 system in the first leg and the fact that they are trailing suggests that they will need to go after goals. Despite this the Bilbao coach Joaquin Caparros has apparently given up on the Super Cup final choosing not to call up to the squad key players Ocio, Yeste and Amorebieta and several other first team regulars before their second leg Europa League qualifying match against Tromso. Barca coach Guardiola meanhwile intends to go all out as he has stated that not trophy is more important than another.

Predicted lineups

Barcelona : Valdes, Dani Alves, Pique, Puyol, Abidal, Xavi, Yaya, Keita, Messi, Ibrahimovic, Henry

Athletic : Iraizoz, Iraola, Ustaritz , San Jose, Koikili, David Lopez, Orbaiz, Gabilondo, Gurpegui, Llorente, Ion Velez

HEAD TO HEAD

Mar 05 : Barcelona 2 - 0 Athletic
Jan 06 : Barcelona 2 - 1 Athletic
Feb 07 : Barcelona 3 - 0 Athletic
Sep 07 : Barcelona 3 - 1 Athletic
Mar 09 : Barcelona 2 - 0 Athletic

Barcelona have not lost a home game to Bilbao in the last 5 attempts in La Liga scoring 12 goals and conceding just 2. Bilbao with a weakened team will have their work cut out for them.

CONCLUSION

Expect a route. A weakened Bilbao coming up against a hungry Barcelona with Ibra set to make his official home debut and Messi and Xavi eager to get the team back to winning ways. This could get ugly and we could see as we did last season the team surge into an unassailable lead before half-time if Bilbao are stunned by an early goal. Expect Barca to try to make a statement in repsonse to Real Madrid's 5-0 mauling of Dortmund in mid-week.

Prediction : Barcelona 4 - Athletic 1

Preview: Athletic Bilbao

Venue: Estadio San Mames, Bilbao

The beaten cup finalists come up against the team that won it all last year in the traditional curtain raiser of the Spanish football season. These two teams know each other well, having played each other in the Copa del Rey final last season. But since then, Barcelona has undergone some major surgery.

There is no real form guide to go on since pre-season friendlies are not exactly the most reliable performance gauge. However we can expect a hot atmosphere at San Mames where the passionate fans will try to cheer Athletic on past a walking wounded Barcelona squad that look short of a few key players.

PRE SEASON

Athletic Bilbao have had a pretty ordinary pre season, winning 2 games, drawing 1 and losing 3. They have already played 2 competitive games in the Europa League third qualifying round, enduring an embarrassing 1-0 loss at home to Swiss side Young Boys. They won the away leg by 2 goals to 1 to sneak into the next round on away goals, but scraping past Swiss opposition in the Europa League isn’t exactly the most convincing way to warm up for your league season. Bilbao also suffered losses to Benfica, with Barcelona old boy Saviola grabbing a brace, and Sporting CP of Portugal. Make no mistake though, they will be up for the Super Cup against Barca as they will want to avenge the 4-1 thrashing in the Copa del Rey final.

Barcelona, meanwhile, has had a pretty disjointed pre-season. First the Samuel Etoo-Zlatan Ibrahimovic saga meant that Barcelona were without a first choice centre forward for the first week of pre-season training. That added to injuries to Ibrahimovic Iniesta Marquez Messi and Henry have meant that Barcelona have been unable to train with their entire first team for the entire pre-season.

Despite this, the youngsters have filled in admirably. Players such as Fontas, Muniesa, Jonathan Dos Santos, Montoya, Ruben Rochina, Rueda and Gai Assulin have shown that the future of FC Barcelona is bright. The actual results were 3 wins and 2 draws. Still the lack of training time together for the first team must be a concern for the coach Pep Guardiola who would no doubt have wanted Ibrahimovic to have as much time as possible getting accustomed to playing with Messi Henry Iniesta and Xavi.

The KEY MEN

Llorente vs Bojan

Fernando Llorente first shot to prominence in the 2005 season with a hat-trick in a Copa del Rey game. He followed this up with 5 goals at the FIFA World Youth Championships in 2005 to finish as 2nd top scorer behind a young Argentinean prodigy by the name of Lionel Messi. Perhaps testaments to his quality are some of the other players that played in that tournament.

Players such as Ustari, Messi, Gago, Aguero, Garay, Zabaleta, Renan, (Barcelona left back target)Filipe Luis, David Edgar, Falcao, Freddy Guarin, Christian Zapata, Marcell Jansen, Andreas Ottl, Ryan Babel, Ibrahim Afellay, Hedwiges Maduro, John Obi Mikel, Raul Albiol, Cesc Fabregas, David Silva, Philippe Senderos and Freddy Adu were all present at that tournament and have gone on to play for some of the biggest clubs in the world at the highest level.

Llorente has steadily improved since and has become a regular starter in the past 2 seasons netting 11 and 13 league goals in the past 2 seasons. He also had 4 goals in Bilbao's Copa del Rey win last season including 1 goal in each leg of the semi final against Sevilla. He finished last season as Athletic's overall top scorer and was rumoured to be a target for FC Barcelona in the offseason. One thing is for certain if Athletic are to have any chance at winning the Super cup, Fernando Llorente is going to need to be at his best.

With Barcelona facing a mini front line crisis with Messi, Ibrahimovic and Henry all possibly missing the first leg of the Supercup, the responsibility of goal-scoring falls on the shoulders of Barcelona's golden boy Bojan. Bojan has been highly touted to break into the team over the past few years, but this season is the one for him to start delivering the goods on a regular basis. Critics have said that Bojan will never make it because he is too small and point to Bojan's drop in league goals from 10 in 2007/2008 to 2 in 2008/2009 as proof of his over-rated status.

A look at the raw facts shows that while Bojan did not do as well in the league, he performed better in the Cup competitions. In the Champions Leauge he scored 3 goals in 9 appearances in 2008/2009 as opposed to 1 goal in 9 appearences in 2007/2008. The Copa del Rey though is where Bojan really shone last season. He scored 5 goals in 8 games last season as opposed to 0 goals in 2 games the season before. Bojan showed his skill was indeed unquestionable, when he came in for the final of the Copa del Rey to replace the injured Henry, and netted the 3rd goal in Barcelona's 4-1 rout.

Overall, Bojan scored 11 goals in 18 starts and 24 subsitute appearances in 2007/2008 and 10 goals in 17 starts and 23 substitute appearances in 2008/2009. Now that he is the main replacement for Henry Ibra and Messi, Bojan needs to step up his game, and what better time to start than the 2009 Super cup? All Barca fans will be hoping that he carries his form of 3 goals in 5 pre-season games into the game on Sunday.

FORMATIONS AND TACTICS

Athletic favoured a 4-4-2 system last season but at times switched to a 4-2-3-1 to add an extra man in the midfield. Against Young Boys in the first leg Athletic fielded a 5 man midfield but in the 2nd leg they went for 2 strikers up front as they needed to win. Against Barcelona in the league last season, Athletic fielded a 4-4-2 lineup and I suspect that they will go for the win on their home ground where Barcelona have traditionally struggled to get results. With so many injuries the Barcelona first team basically picks itself with Valdes Pique Puyol Dani Alves Xavi Yaya and Bojan almost 100% sure to start.

PREDICTED LINEUPS:

Athletic 4-4-2 : Iraizoz, Iraola, Ocio, Amorebieta, Castilla, Orbaiz, Martinez, Yeste, Susaeta, Torquero, Llorente

Barcelona 4-3-3 : Valdes, Alves, Marquez, Pique, Abidal, Xavi, Yaya, Keita, Pedro, Bojan, Jeffren

HEAD TO HEAD

Athletic's only win against Barcelona at the San Mames in the past 5 years came in 2006 after Barcelona had already clinched the league title and had just won the Champions League against Arsenal. Barcelona, meanwhile, has scored more than 1 goal on just 1 occasion in their last 5 visits to Bilbao.

2004-05 : Athletic 1 - 1 Barcelona
May 06 : Athletic 3 - 1 Barcelona
Sep 06 : Athletic 1 - 3 Barcelona
Jan 08 : Athletic 1 - 1 Barcelona
Oct 08 : Athletic 0 - 1 Barcelona

CONCLUSION

A tough away game for Barca who are missing several key players. Bilbao will be encouraged by this despite their poor pre-season form but they will know that this Barcelona team can hold their own even when they are made up mostly of reserves in attack. With Barcelona knowing that they have the safety of returning to the Camp Nou for the 2nd leg and Ibrahimovic, Messi, Marquez, Henry and Iniesta all possibly returning we can expect them to try to hold Athletic and finish them off in the 2nd leg.

Prediction: Athletic 1 – 1 Barcelona
