Youth: Father Deulofeu denies Liverpool deal

Asked about the rumours linking Barcelona Cadete A wing attacker and Spanish youth international Gerard Deulofeu (14) with a move to Liverpool (read more here), the player's father Marcelo Deulofeu has denied to Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo that the player has a pre-agreement with the English Premier League club.

Marcelo Deulofeu did confirm that Liverpool is following his son for a while now and that Barcelona already asked the Catalan player not to leave the club.

The player's father regretted that people are trying to set things up without his involvement, while he and his wife María Jesús are the only legal representatives of the young attacker. The paper claims that other clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Tottenham and Villarreal are also interested in the player.

Ex-Barça: Edmilson to Palmeiras

Former Barcelona midfielder José Edmílson (32) has yesterday been officially presented as new player of Brazilian club Palmeiras, where he signed a two-year contract.

Palmeiras had officially announced last week the transfer of Edmílson, who returns to his home-country after nine years. Villarreal had confirmed the news that they had released the player from his contract.

José Edmílson joined Barcelona in the summer of 2004, arriving from French champions Olympique Lyon. Last summer, he moved to Villarreal after his contract had expired. With Barcelona, Edmílson won two Spanish league titles in 2005 and 2006, two Spanish super cups in 2005 and 2006 and one Champions League in 2006.

Youth: Chelsea interested in two goalkeepers

British tabloid The Daily Mirror claims that Chelsea is trying to sign Barecelona Alevín A goalkeeper Daniel Cardenas "Dani" (11).

Chelsea head scout and director of youth development Frank Arnesen would have invited Cardenas to spend next summer in London. The English Premier League club may offer the goalkeeper a deal.

Madrid sports tabloid Marca meanwhile unconfirmedly claims that Chelsea is also interested in Barcelona Alevín A goalkeeper Juan Carlos Llera (11). The goalkeeper has been watched by Chelsea scouts and their excellent reports makes Chelsea wanting to bring him to England. Spanish clubs Atlético Madrid and Villarreal would also be following Llera.

Pellegrini was last challenger of Guardiola

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Villarreal manager Manuel Pellegrini (55) was one of the top candidates to replace former Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard earlier this year.

When the Barcelona board had made the final decision to dismiss Rijkaard, the Chilean coach was at the start the main challenger of current Inter Milan manager José Mourinho, who had the support of then vice-presidents Ferran Soriano and Marc Ingla. Pellegrini was supported by a group of board members, including people like Albert Perrín and Jacint Borràs who stayed when a part of the board left in July.

Although Mourinho lead the race for quite some time, the Portuguese didn't get the support of Barcelona president Joan Laporta, also because the former Chelsea manager wasn't approved by external adviser Johan Cruijff. Rijkaard would nevertheless have advised the president to sign Mourinho as his successor.

When the Mourinho option was excluded, the name of Barcelona B coach Josep Guardiola was put forward and supported by then board member Evarist Murtra and current sports vice-president Rafael Yuste. Although the board members who didn't believe in Guardiola gathered behind Pellegrini, it was in the end the former Barcelona captain who was appointed as new Barcelona head coach.

Barcelona keeps on scouting Diego Lopez

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona is still interested in Villareal goal keeper Diego López (27) (read more here).

The Spanish goalkeeper is being and will continue to be closely followed by Barcelona to see if he can keep on confirming the positive scouting reports drawn up until now (read more here).

López could in the future form a duo with current Barcelona first-choice goalkeeper Víctor Valdés (26), whom the club wants to offer a contract renewal until 2014 (read more here).

Diego López has a contract with Villarreal until the summer of 2014. The deal includes a buyout clause of 30 million euro°, which would force Barcelona to sit around the table with Villarreal if they will decide to try to sign the goalkeeper.

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona is interested in Villareal goal keeper Diego López (27) (read more here).

Barcelona's technical staff would want to sign a new goalkeeper at the end of this season and have been searching the market. Although there are at this moment several candidates, Diego López would be the first name on the list.

Despite Villareal already having made clear to other interested clubs and to the player's agent Manuel García Quilón that the player is not for sale, Barcelona are monitoring Diego López closely and are drawing up reports on the goalkeeper.

Asked about the rumours linking him with Barcelona, Diego López has said at a press conference that he doesn't plan to leave: "It's always nice that you're linked with big clubs like Barcelona, but I my opinion Villareal is also a big club.

Last year, people were also telling that kind of stories and in the end I renewed my contract. I'm feeling very comfortable here and I already made that clear last year. I think I should stay here to keep making progress and to help the club for many more years."

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Valencia and Villareal are interested in signing Barcelona Atlètic winger and Spanish youth international Jeffren Suárez (20).

The Valencia technical staff would like the Venezualan-born player a lot and it is suggested that this could play a role in a possible transfer of Valencia left winger David Silva to Barcelona.

Aragón regional sports paper Equipo claims that Jeffren is high on the wish list of second division team Zaragoza, that hopes to get the player on loan.

Barcelona Atlètic coach Luis Enrique would want Jeffren to stay with his team but Barcelona thinks it's a better option to let the player leave on loan to a Spanish first or second division club.

Valencia regional sports paper Super Deporte meanwhile claims that Primera División teams Sevilla and Getafe, second division teams Levante, Tenerife and Hércules and some English clubs are also following Jeffren, who has scored twice during the pre-season he's doing with th first team this summer.

Jeffren's brother would have done a trial with Villareal which was seen as an attempt to attract the winger. Jeffren, his father and his agency would nevertheless prefer to stay linked with Barcelona and leave on a loan deal.

A source from the player's entourage is quoted as saying that Jeffren is not planning to stay with Barcelona's second team this season: "The goal is to play in the Primera División, but if that's not possible we would consider the Spanish second division if there's a good project. He'll certainly not return to play with Barcelona Atlètic in the third division.

Now we're waiting to talk with Barcelona. After that we'll look at all the options that are on the table and make a decision. At this moment the door is open for offers to come in from interested clubs."

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that it will be Barcelona Atlètic coach Luis Enrique who will decide what will happen with Jeffren. Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola won't promote the player to the first team and Zaragoza has made a formal loan offer.

Diego Lopez was sounded out

Barcelona site Pelikano claims that Barcelona has sounded out Villareal goal keeper Diego López (26) about a possible transfer to Barcelona (read more here).

This happened after a meeting between Barcelona president Joan Laporta and English national team coach Fabio Capello at the airport of a European capital in May.

The Italian, who also recommended Arsenal striker Adebayor, would have suggested Laporta to offer Diego López, who Capello knows from his time with Real Madrid, a contract.

Opinions on Caceres

A lot of people have said their word on new Barcelona central defender and Uruguayan international Martín Cáceres (21) over the last days. I've picked out two.

Asked about the transfer, Manolo Zambrano, the manager of Recreativo Huelva where Cáceres played this year on loan, said on Tuesday in an interview with Catalan radio station Ona FM that Barcelona could have done 'the deal of the century': "In a year we'll all think that fee is ridiculous for a player like him. If everything goes like it should, Barcelona has a central defender for years and years."

Zambrano describes the technical and human qualities of the player: "In the 14 years that I've been a professional player, I never saw someone with so many qualities in all aspects of the game, nor did I ever see a player with that kind of motivation, willingness to work and natural intelligence. Besides all that, it's really a normal guy and the ultimate proof of that is his partner, who doesn't have anything to do with the show girls of other players."

Barcelona analyst and former Barcelona player Òscar Garcia described Cáceres as follows in Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo: "He's Uruguayan and shows that by his aggressiveness, competitiveness and winning spirit. Having a good technique, hiss main quality is his defensive strength. He's good in the air, is quite fast for a centre back, has a great positioning. And he's young, which leads to think he can develop into an excellent central defender."

pep's opinion:
although I didn't see both of them play a lot (not to say: almost never, not to say: i might have see them play but didn't notice them anyway), my sixth sense tells me beter things about caceres than about garay. i like central defenders who are versatile and hard and (positively) agressive, which caceres seems to be. but i mainly like the fact that everyone describes him as being fast. for a dominant team like barcelona against whom everyone plays the counter attack, it's incredible that we haven't had for so long a really fast central defender. alves will bring more speed at the back too, by the way.

for some reason, i think marquez-caceres sounds like the perfect duo. together they seem to have everything what is needed at the centre back. and maybe guardiola is just thinking the same and that's why he's holding on to marquez despite good offers coming in... and for the future pique-caceres sounds pretty good too. but where would all that leave puyol? and milito?! and oleguer???!!!

Barcelona has announced the signing of Villareal central defender and Uruguayan international Martín Cáceres (21). Barcelona pays a transfer fee of 16,5 million euro°. The defender will play for Barcelona until 2012 and has a buyout fee of 50 million euro°.

The statement on the official website reads: "FC Barcelona and Villarreal CF have reached an agreement for the transfer of José Martín Cáceres. The transfer fee has been set at €16.5 million.The defender will sign a four-year contract with the Blaugrana and will have a buy-out clause of €50 million inserted in to the deal."

The "principal agreement" was confirmed on the Villareal website. Cáceres will fly today to Barcelona to undergo the medical tests and to sign his contract. He will be presented tomorrow.

Caceres transfer to be announced today

Today is the day that Villareal central defender and Uruguayan international Martín Cáceres (21) will be announced as new Barcelona player. At least, that's what everybody says. Again.

The negotiations went on all day yesterday and it seems the deal is closed and that only some administrative issues should be finalized. Cáceres will sign a four-year contract and earn 2 million euro° plus incentives a year.

Madrid sports tabloid Marca claims the fee is 16 million euro° (10 for Villareal and 6 for Fonseca), Madrid sports tabloid As claims the fee is 17 million euro° (10 for Villareal and 7 for Defensor and Recreativo) and Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims the fee is 16,5 million° euro (10 for Villareal and the rest undefined).

Catalan sports paper Sport gives the most detailed and consistent explanation about the partition of the 16,5 million euro transfer fee°: 10 million goes to Villareal and 6,5 million goes to the Daniel Fonseca, the agent of the player who ownes half of the rights of Cáceres through Defensor Sporting de Montevideo, the former club of the player.

With a buyout fee of 20 million euro° and Villareal holding on to its share of 10 million euro°, it was Fonseca who accepted a lower part of the fee due to the pressure of the player and because Villareal would get full property of the player by next summer.

Besides all that, Recreativo Huelva, the club where Cáceres played on loan this season, would also receive a little one million euro of the money Villareal will get from Barcelona.

Deal on Caceres

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona has reached an agreement on the transfer of Villareal central defender and Uruguayan international Martín Cáceres (21). The deal could be announced today.

Barcelona's first offer of 15 million euro° was last week rejected (read more here). Villareal held on to the buyout clause of 20 million euro°, an amount the club has to share with Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting de Montevideo, the former club who still holds 50% of the rights of the player (note: some sources are still claiming that it's actually his agent who holds that other half).

Barcelona refused to pay the buyout fee and was considering other options like paying a part of the sum in variables or convincing Defensor to accept a lower fee. Villareal bought half of Cacerés' transfer rights last summer, paying between 1,5 and 2 million euro°. Catalan sports paper Sport claims that the final fee would be 17 million euro° plus 3 million euro° variables.

Villareal seems to assume for a while now that Cáceres will leave this summer and is already looking to replace him. Madrid sports tabloid Marca claimed last week that the club had contacted the agent of French defender Pascal Cygan, whose contract with Villareal expires this month and who had been told he could leave, to ask the player to postpone a decision on his future for ten days. If Cáceres leaves, Villareal in the end could offer Cygan a renewal.

Villareal chief executive José Manuel Llaneza told journalists yesterday that a deal on Cáceres was very close: "Every day that goes by, the situation is moving in the right direction and that makes one think that an agreement should be near, although I cannot yet confirm that we have a final deal."

Cáceres meanwhile didn't stop giving interviews (Spanish television station La Sexta, Spanish local television station Canal Nou, Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo twice, Madrid sports tabloid Marca, Catalan radio station COM Ràdio) basically repeating the same: he wouldn't mind staying in Villareal, but Barcelona is a great club which he couldn't say 'no' to and he hoped there would be an agreement soon.

In an interview with Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo, Cáceres, who is believed to have a personal agreement with Barcelona on a four-year contract earning 2 million euro plus incentives a year (read more here), said that he was close to joining Real Madrid two weeks ago: "Madrid wanted me and everything seemed to be agreed upon. I don't know why it didn't went through in the end."

After he spend days waiting at his house in Huelva, Cáceres yesterday flew off to Ururguay to join the national team. Daniel Fonseca, his agent, had asked the player to postpone the start of his holidays because a deal seemed close. And if an agreement on the transfer would be found, Cáceres could then immediately travel to Barcelona to undergo the medical tests and to sign the contract.

Edmilson's last interview

Former Barcelona midfielder José Edmílson gave an exclusive goodbye interview to the club's official media. Some quotes:

How does it feel now that your time at Barcelona is over?
"The truth is that I am a bit sad about leaving a great club, I am happy to have won two league titles and the Champions League. I have had four very good years here. The last two have not been good in terms of results, but I think that we can look back on many good things during my time here."

"When you see the motto 'mès que un club' it is difficult to describe what it means. It is a feeling of the city and of a nation. I have talked to many fans in the street and they have told me that if the team loses they do not eat or sleep well. At times, it is difficult for a player to understand this and when you come from a smaller club the feeling is very different and you have to adapt to the philosophy. Despite that, my experience with the national team has helped. In Brazil during the World Cup, the people live the football every day."

Villareal rejects offer for Caceres

Villareal president Fernando Roig said at a press conference today that his club has rejected a formal offer from Barcelona for Villareal central defender and Uruguayan international Martín Cáceres (21) (read more here): "This morning we received an offer from Barcelona for our player Martín Cáceres. Because we thought the offer was not satisfactory, we have rejected it and communicated our decision to Barcelona."

Asked about the rumours linking the defender with Barcelona, Roig had declared at a press conference yesterday that Cáceres will only leave if the buyout fee of 20 million euro° is paid: "He has a contract for the next four years and we want him to stay. Barcelona, or any other club, knows how it works. If they want Martín Cáceres, there's a clause. If they don't want to pay the fee, we will not let the player go."

Barcelona wants to reduce the fee of 20 million euro° and Roig sounded today more open to negotiations: "We're now going to talk with Barcelona. If their final offer approaches what we think is a good deal for us, ok. And if not, the player has a contract and will be a Villareal player next season."

Fernando Sobral, president of Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting who still owns a part of the rights on Cáceres (read more here), said in an interview with Catalan radio station RAC 1 that Villareal has the last word on the transfer: "Everything depends on Villareal, we cannot do anything. We're only involved as a part of the buyout fee will come to Defensor. We will just observe the events from a distance and we'll support whatever Martín and his agent will chose."

In a reaction on the transfer rumours, Cáceres said to RAC 1 that he was willing to join Barcelona: "I know that Barcelona is interested and of course I would like to play for a great club like Barça, one of the best clubs in the world. I'm 21 years old and I should keep my head cool but everyone knows that it's very difficult to say no to Barcelona. But they will have to agree with Villareal on the price. If not, I wouldn't mind playing for Villareal next season."

Cáceres repeated the same in an interview with Catalan radio station Catalunya Ràdio, adding that he can also play as right or left back defender.

Edmilson presented in Villareal

Former Barcelona defensive midfielder José Edmílson (31) has today been presented as new player of Spanish Liga club Villareal (read more here).

At a press conference Edmílson said that he's still ambitious: "I'm very motivated for this new challenge in my professional life. People might think that a 31-year old just wants to relax but I come here to help the team to grow and to win trophies. I like to play with pressure of havin to win a trophy. I hope I can play at a good level here and be able to return that way to the Brazilian national selection."

Edmílson added that he rejected an offer from AC Milan last year because he had problems with his knee and he didn't like the idea of joing a club while being injured.

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona has closed a deal with Villareal central defender and Uruguayan international Martín Cáceres (21).

Daniel Fonseca, the agent of Cáceres, has been in Barcelona since Friday (read more here) and has yesterday drawn up a final draft of the player's future contract with Barcelona sports vice president Marc Ingla and Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain.

In an interview with Catalan radio station RAC 1, Fonseca admitted the interest of Barcelona for Cáceres but said that an agreement between al parties won't be easy: "Barcelona called me and said that Martín Cáceres is a priority for them. We have held the first talks but Barcelona will now have to speak with Villareal. There are also other clubs interested, so we'll see how things will turn out. But which player wouldn't be delighted with a call from a club like Barcelona?"

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona will meet in the coming days with Villareal officials to discuss a transfer. Cáceres has a buyout fee of 20 million euro°, which Barcelona wants to reduce, and still belongs for 50 per cent to Defensor Sporting, his former Uruguayan club. Villareal, who doesn't plan to let the defender go, bought half of the rights of Cáceres last year for 1,5 million euro°.

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona sports vice president Marc Ingla and Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain met yesterday afternoon in the 'Juan Carlos I' hotel in Barcelona with Daniel Fonseca, the agent of Recreativo Huelva central defender and Villareal loan out Martín Cáceres (21).

Barcelona wants to bring in another centre back defender who can play alongside Puyol during the first months of next season when Gabriel Milito will be out due to an injury. Cáceres would be one of the main options. This is confirmed by Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo.

During the meeting the contract situation and the wishes of the player were discussed. It seems that the Uruguayan defender would be very interested in a transfer but that the fee could be a main problem, with Villareal not willing to let Cáceres go for less than 20 million euro° (read more here).

But since the defender belongs for 50 per cent to his agent, El Mundo Deportivo claims that Fonseca could choose to just keep that part of the ownership which would mean Barcelona should only pay 10 million euro° to Villareal.

Villareal has announced on its official website that the club has reached an agreement with Barcelona defensive midfielder José Edmílson (31), whose contract with Barcelona expires in June.

Edmílson will sign for two years and will be officially presented at a press conference on Monday. Over the last months Edmílson had also been linked with Betis, Besiktas and Júbilo Iwata. Less than one month ago, the first rumours about an upcoming agreement with Villareal were spread. Last Friday those rumours were confirmed when the Brazilian midfielder underwent a medical.


At an emotional press conference this morning, Edmílson said goodbye to Barcelona: "I want to thank the socios and everyone that has been supporting me. I'm sad that I'm leaving but I'm happy for the four years I spend here. I have lived a dream in a club that is indeed 'more than a club'. In those four years I have tried to do the best I could. The injuries have not helped me a lot, but I only take good memories with me. Of great people, a great atmosphere and an impressive city."

Referring to his 'black sheep' statement of last season, when he pointed at some team members as not being enough involved with the club, Edmílson said: "I hope the people will not remember me for that bomb declaration, but for the person I am. I want to return to Barcelona one day with my head up high."
