The End (final draft)

Today, I have to basically repeat what I already said a little two months ago. Some changes in my personal life mean that I won't have the time anymore that I think is necessary to keep up the level of this blog nor to get things organized for people to join in and deliver more of the same. The quality of the content has always been our main concern and quality asks time.

We didn't only bring the big stories that attract the most readers. We didn't only check the main sources and took the most sensational stories from there. We actually checked my sources. We didn't take advantage of the work of others by copy-pasting stories from other sites. But so all that asks a lot of time.

This started as a little personal blog to keep track of what really was going on and it has been growing ever since until the peak we have today. I'm pretty sure that the experts wouldn't have given a cent for this ugly duck without 2.0 stuff but I think we have shown that with a sense for quality and hard work alone you can become the number one and attract the most readers.

And still there was so much more to do. We were perfectly aware of the weak points of this place but knew at the same time exactly how those could be solved. It's a little frustrating to have the blueprint of the perfect Barça fan site in your head but knowing at the same time you won't be able to make it work.

It should have become a combination of :
- a Barcelona news and opinion machine (independent from the madridista-controlled spanish and english language -and so international- media),
- a charity machine (this gives me the chance to inform you that because of the growing number of visitors and benefits - and a little contribution from my side - we will be able to let two African children finish the primary school, thank you for that!),
- a place for people from all over the world to meet,
- a place for young and/or talented people to develop some skills in an international environment.

Will I miss it? Yes. I already do and I will even more if I start reading stories that are mistranslated, misinterpreted, twisted or sensationalized. Or if I read stories that won't be picked up by the mainstream media. I will have to do without my continuous Barcelona news shots and with the knowledge I won't be any longer the probably best informed Barcelona fan in the world.

Will this blog be back? Never say never, but don't count on it. Will I be back? Maybe with some little things in the margin that don't ask a lot of time. If it's good, you will hear about it. If you cannot wait, you probably should follow things on twitter. Men or women with a plan who think I can be of any help, know where they can find me. In general, I will from now on be among the millions of anonymous readers out there and maybe in the future contributing behind the scenes to the greatness of the club.

I saw that last time many people asked about where to go to now. Regarding the news in English, it is probably best to combine the well-known football news sites and the club's official website with the newsnow.com stream. To know more, you should start learning Spanish and Catalan.

Regarding the discussion side, I first think that this blog was mainly a news source and wasn't really the most suited place to discuss things. There are many thousands of places out there where you can discuss Barcelona --- blogs, sites, forums, social networks, in English and/or your own language, focused on Barcelona only or on football or sport in general.

After the treble successes, some people have jumped on the Barcelona band wagon and new projects have been launched in the past weeks. And some more projects are being prepared and are expected to start off soon, so I guess the brainstorm sessions to attract you as reader are already going on. And the disappearance of this blog will probably lead to some more projects being set up. You can only benefit from that. Every place has its own vibe, so just google a bit around and I'm sure you will find yourself a new spot.

The live match chat will go on, bookmark it now. Besides that, I just want to point out this little hidden pearl and – because I still owe someone something – this forum, the grand old lady of Barcelona sites in English and run by people who are only in it because of the love for the club and not to satisfy an oversized ego or to win some easy money. My kind of culé basically.

This blog will stay up as a remembrance of the best year ever in the history of the greatest club. If you're going through a bad time, you can come and get some renewed energy here.

I want to thank all the people who have been involved with this blog, writing things, translating things, looking for things, sending me suggestions, offering their help. They made this blog to what it was. Over the past weeks, I couldn't keep everything turning anymore like I should, some plates went to the ground, except my apologies for that.

I want to thank you for reading, commenting and spreading the word. I have enjoyed the ride, I hope you had a good time too. It has been a pleasure serving you, take care.

Visca'l Barça!

Txiki: "It's difficult for Barça to sell players"

Speaking at a press conference, Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain looked back at the summer transfer window.

The squad
"Having a shorter squad is not a risk. You can have a larger squad but then you have the problem of managing all that and that carries some risks too. I don't see a problem compared with next season.

The exit of Jorquera won't have an effect because we just return to the situation of having two goalkeepers at the first team. Chygrynskiy will have more minutes than Cáceres. The minutes of Hleb will be for Pedro. And both Jonathan and Tiago could take advantage of the sale of Gudjohnsen. Maxwell will probably play more than Sylvinho and Ibrahimovic replaces Eto'o. And the club also hopes that Milito will have recovered soon.

It's true that Pep has said that the squad is rather short but he has also said that he has a lot of confidence in the youth players, who adapt easily to the way of playing. We have played with a lot of home-grown players in last season's Champions League final, we ended the Super Cup in Monaco with eight home-grown players on the pitch and during the pre-season we have seen that there are talented youth players coming through. We are starting the season with a good and secure feeling, and we are very satified with the current squad."

The winter tranfer window
"Although we don't really like the winter market, we will be monitoring things over the coming months since we haven't been able to do everything we wanted this summer because of the very high and actually shocking prices."

Robinho
"We have a great relationship with Manchester City and during the talks the name of Robinho came up. We didn't make a concrete bid because every time we talked about it, they made clear that he was not for sale."

Selling players
"It's difficult for Barça to get money for the players we sell. We basically sell because we don't want the player anymore. We don't need them anymore and the other teams of course know that too. The salary is one of the other problems when selling players. In any case, we don't want to be the best sellers. Our first objective is to buy players and to improve what we already have."

Estiarte: "Pep cannot say that he's the best"

Barcelona head of external relations and close friend of Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola gave an interview to Catlan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo. Some excerpts.

Tell the truth. Did you and Pep ever think about winning the treble before you started?
Not at all.

What did Pep thought when he took over the team?
Before I joined Barcelona, he spoke highly about this Barca. And sometimes, at dinner and after drinking a glass of wine, he jokingly he said that he sensed something. And that feeling grew as time went by.

In Rome , when the celebrations were almost finished, the giant screen captured you at the time that you embraced, exited, like brothers. What did Pep say to you at that moment?
It remembered me of the Copa del Rey in Mestalla. There he said to me "We're rolling Manel".

And in Rome ?
Well, he said "We rolled". That is his phrase, that is so him, he repeats it often when we win, it's his way to express his happiness, like when we won 2-6 in Madrid. The thing is that there in Mestalla he exclaimed it with deep joy, watching so many people happy, celebrating the first title.

How did he experience it? Because it seems as if he internalizes things.
Pep is aware of things, he often says when nobody is around that he is so lucky to be able to live this. Even in Rome, in a moment of maximum joy, with thousands of people cheering he never, I repeat to make it very clear, never something like "Oh, I'm so good", not even something like "How good we are!". No, he expresses things differently, he says "This is beautiful, how lucky we are, let's enjoy the moment". Always with modesty. It is not a show, because at those moments you are yourself, you can not hide your feelings or reactions. Although of course nobody could blame him if he would say "I'm the best", he cannot do it.

What is clear is that he seems quite sure about what he is doing.
Sometimes he comments how he will approach a particular issue and he says to me "Manel, I see it like this". I remember Soria, after losing the first league game against Numancia, he was silent for two hours on the bus. When he finally opened his mouth it was to say that he was not going to change anything, that he would continue with his ideas. If he strongly believes in something he will go all the way.

But there will be moments of doubt.
Well, he always tries to reason a lot. And before deciding, even though it seems that he gets carried away by instinct, he's thinking about things. Sometimes you're talking to him and you see that he is not listening because suddenly he is pondering something in all his aspects.

If Pep is sanctioned, he asks you to sit besides him in the stands. Why does he prefer to have you near at that moment?
He asks. As in the field of Bayern. He tells me to fix it with protocol to be together. Why? Well, he talks to me about football. And talks. I guess it's a confidence problem. There I felt that my presence helped him, especially before the game. UEFA forced him to be there an hour and a half earlier. Lonely moments, without being able to go to the dressing room, which was close. The nerves ate him and I tried to distract him until the game started, then he relaxed. It was the longest half hour of my life.

How are you with the players?
The "capi", Puyol, asked me to sit with him at Stamford Bridge too. And he said what would happen! Incredible! When Essien scored, his comment was "Manel, don't suffer, we will score when they won't be able to react". His words comforted me, yes, but the minutes kept going. When there were only 10 minutes left, he repeated that I should not worry. After 90 minutes, I didn't say anything and in the 92nd minute when Iniesta scored he shouted "I told you! I told you!". These are unrepeatable moments, Andrés ran down the sideline and I embracing the captain who even gave me kisses.

What is the goal now?
The same. We have something that we didn't have a year ago, the certainty of knowing that this Barça is a great team individually and collectively. The team knows it. That's positive. Half of the work is done, the quality football is there now. There is quality, there is work, there is security and confidence.

Cesc talks about Barcelona exit

Asked about why he left Barcelona in 2003, Arsenal midfielder and Spain international Cesc Fabregas (22) has said in an interview with television network Gol TV that the club didn't really believe in him:

"At Barça, they used to renew your contract every year and there were players like Leo, Piqué and others who they really believed in.

I was average, not good, not bad. I was there but I wasn't one of those they expected to have a big future. They believed more in others than in me. So I decided that the best thing was to move, to change."

Inter Milan has first option on Messi

Italian sports paper La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Inter Milan has an informal agreement with Barcelona right wing attacker and Argentinian international Lionel Messi (22).

Inter president Massimo Moratti would have closed a verbal deal with the player's father and agent Jorge Messi that they will first negotiate with the Italian club if Messi would have to leave Barcelona in the future for whatever reason, also because the player would prefer to join Inter in that case.

Cocktail of the day: Chygrynskiy

The Boadas Cocktail Bar in Barcelona has made a cocktail named "Chygrynskiy", in honour of Barcelona's new signing.

The cocktail consists of two-quarters vodka, one-quarter lemon juice, one-quarter cranberry juice, some ginger ale, a couple of cucumber slices and a cherry.

Barkeeper Jerónimo Vaquero, who invented the cocktail, explains: "I analyzed the person, who is tall and strong. So we needed a powerful combination, and we couldn't leave out the vodka of course. You should drink it slowly, little by little, without hurrying. It's very fresh and digestive, ideal for the late afternoon. It's a big glass and the price is 7 and a half euros."

Riera confirms Barcelona interest

Asked about the rumours linking him earlier this summer with a move to Barcelona (read more here), Liverpool left winger and Spanish international Albert Riera (27) has confirmed in an interview with Madrid sports tabloid As that Barcelona was interested:

"I will not deny that there was something going on. It's true that they were interested in me. But I play at Liverpool, which is a European top club. One day I nevertheless would like to return to the Liga, when the time is right.

I don't want to think about the rumours that I didn't start two league games because I studied an offer of Barcelona. Benítez is an extraordinary coach who defends what is his. I know he counts on me because he has told me that."

Youth: Nelson Mandela and Camara (FundEsport)

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo reports that FundEsport youth players Nelson Mandela (11) and Cámara (probably 10) will join Barcelona.

Both players will arrive this month in Barcelona and will start the new season with respectively the Alevín A and the Alevín B youth team.

FundEsport is the foundation of former Barcelona player Samuel Eto'o, with which Barcelona has a co-operation agreement since the foundation was founded three years ago. With Mandela and Cámara, there would now be 15 Cameroonian players in Barcelona's youth academy.

Iniesta not worried about contract renewal

Asked about his contract renewal (read more here), Barcelona attacking midfielder and Spanish international Andres Iniesta (25) has said at a press conference that he is not worried about the issue:

"I won't lose sleep over it because I feel loved here and because the club has always valued me in a correct way. I hope to retire at the Camp Nou.

The only thing I want now is to be given the green light - which I think is very close - to go to the stadium of Getafe and to play again. I have suffered a lot lately, it has been a hard summer and I want to feel like a football player again. My leg has recovered and I want to start playing as soon as possible."

Shakhtar winger Willian on winter target list

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona is still interested in Shakhtar Donetsk winger Willian Borges da Silva (21).

The Brazilian player would be on the list of possible winter transfers, but with a contract until 2012 and a buyout clause of 30 million euros° a transfer seems difficult.

Last year, Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain would already have met once with Nikola Franco, the agent of the Brazilian attacker, in the Camp Nou offices (read more here), but this then didn't lead to any concrete result.

Chygrynskiy: "Barcelona is a religion"

Speaking at a press conference, new Barcelona player Dmytro Chygrynskiy has commented on his transfer to Barcelona:

"Adapting will depend on me. The language can be a problem because my English is quite basic. And although it's clearly an international team, all the players speak Spanish and the majority of them Catalan.

I am already looking forward to return there and to start working with the team. In Barcelona, the club is not just sport, it's a religion and it has an influence on the whole culture. People are crazy about Barça.

Has my status in the national team changed because of my transfer to Barcelona? I don't like to talk about status, but about being committed to the national team and thinking about our common interest. We are four steps away from the World Cup."

Guardiola wanted to replace Henry this summer

Madrid sports tabloid As claims that Barcelona wanted to replace Barcelona forward and French international Thierry Henry (31) during the past summer transfer window.

Because Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola would have had enough of the clash of the egos of Henry and Eto'o, he reportedly asked the club to look for a new left winger.

Although it was Eto'o who took all the hits from the press and Henry came out of it fairly undamaged because of his good relationship with the media and the entourage of the club, Guardiola would have wanted to get rid of both players.

Barcelona would therefore have been discretely sounding out the market over the last months and contacted among others left wingers like Riera, Robben, Robinho, Mata and Silva. But although those players would have agreed to join Barcelona, it was not possible to close a deal with their clubs. If Barcelona would find a new left winger next year, Henry will probably leave the club at the end of this season.

Messi: "Everything is the merit of Guardiola"

Barcelona player Lionel Messi gave an interview to Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo.

Tell us something about Barça. What is Guardiola adding to this squad?
Everything. What he transmits, what he knows, the attitude he has, the desire with which he is working with us, everything that is happening is his merit, the five cups are his merit. I admire Guardiola, I admire his ability to lift up a squad that was humiliated, a squad that was doing really bad. It's a unique coach.

And Maradona?
He's the idol of the Argentinian people. The only time I saw Maradona play was when I was a kid. My father and my uncle took me to the stadium of Newell's. I had already seen the goals of Diego so many times at home... In Argentina, when there's some gathering, people always end up watching the goals of Maradona against England. I don't remember almost nothing of that game at the stadium of Newell's, but now he's here, as national team coach, of a team in which I am the number '10'. He's a great motivator. If Diego talks, everyone is listening because we know we are hearing the voice of football.

Brazil-Argentina: what a game!
Yes, and at home. Of course we have the qualities needed to beat the Brazilians. The team is united, Rosario is involved with the team and we need to win because we want to be at the World Cup. The Brazilians also play good football, they can count on my friend Dani Alves who is a phenomenon. But this has to be our game.

Let's talk about another coach, José Mourinho.
(laughs) I never had problems with him. I keep on saying what I have always said. It seems a great coach, who makes his team play in a very disciplined way, a winner as he has shown with several teams. And he's a lucky guy because he can now count on a centre forward like Samu. The games against Inter will be entertaining. I really hope Samu will do great at Inter. We all want him to have a great time, a lot of us still have a great relationship with Samuel.

There's someone in this Barça who is irreplaceable?
We live as a team and we work as a team, but if there is one then maybe the captain, Carles Puyol. As a person, as a captain, how he helps the team in every moment. He has helped me a lot. And well, as a player I don't have to reveal anything, there's nobody like him, he's a '10'.

[2008] Ribery was on top of Guardiola's wish list

this article was published exactly one year ago:

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Bayern Munich wing attacker and French international Franck Ribéry (25) was on top of the wish list of Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola to replace Ronaldinho as left wing attacker.

Barcelona sounded out Bayern officials who were nevertheless not willing to start talking (read more here).

The second name that was proposed by Guardiola was that of Real Madrid left winger and Brazilian international Robinho (24). After talking with agent Wagner Ribeiro, it soon became clear that Madrid didn't want to sell the player to Barcelona (read more here).

Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain then proposed trying the transfer of Valencia left winger and Spanish international David Silva (22), who in the end chose to renew his contract with Valencia.

Barcelona finally looked at the option to sign Zenit Saint-Petersburg forward and Russian international Andrei Arshavin (27) or Sevilla left winger and Spanish international Diego Capel (20). Although Guardiola wasn't totally convinced of their qualities, both players could have partially solved the left wing problems but a deal was not found.

Barcelona keeping an eye on Robinho

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona is still interested in Manchester City left winger and Brazilian international Robinho (25).

After the failed last-minute attempts of last month - officals of both clubs would have met to discuss a transfer both in Barcelona in the margin of the Joan Gamper game as in Monaco last week - Barcelona plans to monitor the situation of the Brazilian winger, who could still take part in the Champions League if he would join Barcelona in the January transfer window.

While Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola would be fond of the player, Manchester City coach Mark Hughes wouldn't have a good relationship with Robinho and could count less on him this season. This might lead Barcelona, that failed to strengthen the left wing this summer, to make a new move in the next months if the English Premier League would be willing to sell at an acceptable price.

Iniesta writes treble book

"One year in paradise. My diary of the treble" is the title of the book that Andrés Iniesta has written with journalists Sique Rodriguez and Dani Senabr.

Iniesta did not want to loose the chance to explain all experiences and emotions that he has felt during the past wonderful year.

In the book people will be able to find a revision of eight - because of his number - moments that have marked his season and that Andrés has lived with more energy: the goal at Stamford Bridge, the arrival of Guardiola, his injuries, the 2-6 againt Real Madrid, the cup final, the league win, the final in Rome and the treble celebrations.

The book, that will be available in Catalan and from next week on also in Spanish, will be presented at the Camp Nou later today and is described as "a unique opportunity to be closer to all the emotions Andrés has lived in the last season, the most magical one in F.C. Barcelona's history. A real diary full of curiosities, jokes and exclusive images taken by Andrés."

"It's impossible that we now already would be at the same cruising speed as we had at the end of last season. Besides that, one shouldn't forget that in our first league game, we played without Messi and Iniesta, probably two of the best players in the world."

Chygrynskiy
"We have seen Chygrynskiy play a lot and we have been following him closely for several months. Because of the way Shakhtar and Lucescu have been playing, it will be easy for him to adapt here. He can build up very good, with both legs."

Laporta satisfied with transfer summer

Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Barcelona president Joan Laporta looked back at the transfer summer:

"We have brought everything that had been asked. The first objective was to find a new centre forward because of the exit of Samuel Eto'o and we managed to do that. Ibrahimovic was the first option and we managed to sign him.

We signed Maxwell to replace Sylvinho. And the finishing touch has been Chygrynskiy. I have the impression that the coach is very satisfied with his squad and also with our belief in the youth players.

I think with the new guys, Barcelona will keep the same motivation and the same work-rate and will be able to make the dreams of the fans come true. I want to thank the technical department because in a time of crisis, Barcelona has been able to spend 80 millions on players and to solve a complicated situation like the one of Eto'o. I think that we have acted with common sense and that we didn't overspend."

Milito: "I am looking forward to face Barcelona"

Inter Milan forward Diego Milito gave an interview to Catalan sports paper Sport.

What do you think about having to play against Barça in the Champions League?
It's always motivating to play against the European champions, it's logical that we are looking forward to it, we want to win this.

They have some weak points?
We all know Barça is a great team with a lot of top players. We will be informed about them when the games are coming closer.

You have talked about it with Messi?
No, not at all. We both will defend our colours and we will give everything for our team to win. It will be a very attractive game and I am sure that football lovers will look forward to it. I believe in my team, in my team-mates.

You are worried to have Messi as an opponent?
Well, we should be prepared for it.

How do you stop him?
Pfff, we know him well, it's an excellent player and we cannot relax one second. There's not one recipe to mark him. We are talking about a unique player here. Let's hope things turn out for the best.

Inter defeated Milan 4-0. Can you still get better?
The team starts to know each other little by little. There's still a little left. But Inter is doing very well.

You are looking forward to the game against Barcelona?
We all like this kind of games, the ones against Brazil or against Barcelona. It's special to play against one of the best teams in the world. So we will have to be prepared.

Contract duration problem for Marquez renewal

Catalan sports paper El 9 Esportiu claims that Barcelona is working on the renewal of Barcelona central defender and Mexican international Rafael Márquez (30).

The renewal negotiations with the player would have been intensified over the past days and although the talks would be well-advanced, the duration of the new contract would remain the main obstacle (read more here).

While Barcelona would have offered Márquez, whose current contract expires at the end of this season, to renew for two more years (one year plus an option for a second year), the player would want to extend his contract for three more years (two years plus an option for a third year).

Student of the day: Chygrynskiy

On 27 July of this year, Dmytro Chygrynskiy received a Master's degree in Intellectual Property at the Donetsk State University of Management.

Who will be the next president of FC Barcelona?

In May or June next year, Barcelona's club members will appoint a new president. After two terms, current president Joan Laporta cannot run again. Who are the candidates to succeed him?

1. The continuity candidate
The current Barcelona board wants to put forward one candidate who should continue the current project. In recent weeks and months, this seemed to have become a struggle between marketing vice-president Jaume Ferrer and recently appointed board member Xavier Sala i Martín.

While Sala, a professor of economics at Columbia University in New York, would have the support of president Laporta, Ferrer would be backed by the majority of the board members. First vice-president Alfons Godall, who first had said that he would not run, has put himself back on the map in two interviews earlier this week and could become the consensus candidate. A decision is expected to be made in December or January.

2. Sandro Rosell (former sports vice-president, board member 2003-2005)
(picture)
Rosell is until this moment the only one who has publicly announced - in the summer of 2008 - that he will run for president. He has started to prepare for the elections shortly after he resigned as vice-president in 2005.

Rosell has long been seen as the favourite to become the next president although this could have changed because of last season's sporting succeses of the team. Rosell is seen as the architect of the team around Brazilian player Ronaldinho that won two league titles and one Champions League under coach Frank Rijkaard.

3. Ferran Soriano (former economic vice-president, board member 2003-2008)
Until he stepped down together with several other board members last summer, Soriano was considered to be the most likely "board candidate" for the elections. Soriano is seen as the architect of the current healthier financial situation of the club, compared to the situation when Laporta took office back in 2003. Because of his new job as chairman of airline company Spanair it has become uncertain if Soriano will run.

4. The Others
Several other names of people from the "entorn", the club's entourage, are rumoured to try to set up a candidature. Former presidental candidates like Jordi Majó, Josep Maria Minguella or Jaume Llauradó could again make an attempt, although none of them are expected to have a serious chance and they might try to link up with one of the main candidates trying to get a place in the board.

Piqué: "Xavi-Iniesta-Cesc best possible midfield"

Barcelona player Gerard Piqué gave an interview to Spanish radio station Onda Cero. Some excerpts.

Cesc
"Of course I would do anything to have him with us. At the national team we have a great time with Cesc. A midfield with Xavi, Iniesta and Cesc would be a five-star midfield. You cannot find a better midfield."

The renewal of Messi
"The best player in the world should be the best paid player too."

His own renewal
"It seems as if everyone is getting a pay rise lately... Let's hope it's my turn soon."

Ibrahimovic
"It's normal that Ibrahimovic was a little nervous. He arrived at a new club, he cost a lot of money, he's a star. It's also normal that he still has to adapt to the way of playing, and a forward is getting confidence by scoring goals."

Chygrynskiy
"I'm not afraid of the competition, no. He's a great player. If they've signed him, if Pep has asked for him and has pushed so much to have him, there should be a reason for that. He has great qualities. He will adapt quickly."

Stoichkov: "They should build a monument for Eto'o"

Mamelodi Sundowns manager and former Barcelona player Hristo Stoichkov gave an interview to Catalan sports paper Sport.

How do you see Barça?
Oh dear! Barça is unique in world football. They are at their own level. I saw the Champions League draw and the 'Barça vs Inter' debate is senseless. Mourinho is a great coach and has a great team but he knows Barça is better. Can they loose a game against Inter? Of course, but if I had to put my money on one team, I would put it on Barça.

What about Eto'o returning to the Camp Nou? Ibra or Eto'o?
The press always seems to want to make comparisons. Eto'o has given so many things to Barça that they should build a monument for him. If Ibra now plays well and also give trophies to the culés, well that would be another monument... But let's not take credit away from the one who's not there anymore just to be able to talk positively about the new one. And we shouldn't ask Ibrahimovic to score two goals each game either. He should be given time to adapt to the system, the team-mates, the club, the city...

Another treble is possible?
I would like it but people from the world of football know how difficult it is. I was part of one of the best teams in the history of Barcelona and we didn't win one treble. Now they've already won the two super cups. This team has a winning spirit, a good mentality, with good players, a good coach, but...

But?
...football is no mathematics and two and two is not four. If that was the case, Real Madrid would be the next champion. With all that money, all those names, with so many cracks, that's the end of it, period, you shouldn't have to play any more competitions. But it's not like that, so we shouldn't put even more pressure on the team nor expect that Barça will again win everything just like that.

So we shouldn't worry about Real Madrid?
Yes, you should worry, but you shouldn't get obsessed. We have to continue with our own thing because if we keep the same line, it will be difficult for the galaxy to beat us. Ronaldo, Kaká, Benzema are great but Messi, Xavi and Iniesta are better. Right?

I guess so, yes. When do you return to Catalonia?
I won't be able to leave South Africa until Christmas. But I'm already looking forward to it!

What about returning to Barça?
I also would want that! I didn't have the chance so far but you never know what can happen in the future. I would like to and if it would be possible, fantastic, but if not, we continue with other things. Being inside or outside the club, I'm a Barça fan.

What do you think about the transfer of Chygrynskiy?
Great. Guardiola proves that he has courage because it's very easy to sign Ibra but it's more complicated with a Ukrainian boy of 22 years old, not known by many people. I congratulate Pep for the chance he's giving Dimitro.

What would you advise him?
His story reminds me my own. I also arrived in Barcelona being very young but with a lot of desire to conquer the world. He's from the East, which means he has character and I am sure he will succeed. I would advise him that he opens his eyes, listens and works.

Puyol agent casting doubts on renewal

Asked about the contract renewal of Barcelona central defender and Spanish international Carles Puyol (31) (read more here), the player's agent Ramon Sostres has said in an interview with Italian football site Calcio Mercato that the player is in doubt about his future:

"At this stage, Puyol's renewal talks have stopped. He has received a very good offer but the player now first wants to see how things go with the squad. Barcelona has now signed Chygrynskiy for the positions of centre-back, where they already had Piqué and Márquez.

We saw what happened last season when Puyol played on the right, on the left and in the centre. In the semi-final of the Champions League against Chelsea he played very little. I think he must be the only captain that is not used in such an important game. The player's doubts are exclusively related to the sporting side, the financial aspect is not an issue here.

Now the player has to think long and hard about his future and decide whether that future will be with Barcelona or with another team. We will see about that later. Milan? The club seems to have some trouble at this moment. I was surprised by the transfer of Kaká. But they stay one of the most important clubs and one of those that Puyol likes. Only time will tell, it's still too early to comment on these transfer rumours.

The renewal offer is on the table but at this moment there are no further talks. We will see what will happen during the season although we are not expecting him to leave at this point because he is very attached to Barcelona. Is there a new meeting planned? I'll meet Txiki soon to talk about Iniesta and it's possible we also talk about Puyol.

But I repeat that it's not a financial problem but exclusively a football issue. The relationship with Guardiola is fine. Pep likes the player a lot, which is normal because I think it's one of the few footballers in the world who can play at all defensive positions.

But in the centre the coach wants players who are good with the ball and so it is possible that he prefers Márquez, Chygrynskiy or Piqué. The coach nevertheless knows he can count on a player who is always available for whatever needs. He is 31 years old and at that age, no team can give him any assurances. We will see what happens, time can change many things."

Wenger pointing at Barcelona players

Speaking at a press conference about a diving accident involving Arsenal player Eduardo during the Arsenal-Celtic game, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger earlier this week tried to pull Barcelona players Messi and Pedro into the debate:

"Uefa have made the case of Eduardo. If you watch the Super Cup on Friday then they will have to charge Lionel Messi for headbutting or they will lose credibility. They have opened something there that over the weekend I'll find you 50 situations where they can intervene, or if they don't Eduardo will be singled out for being a wrong victim.

I do not want Messi to be punished but if they go for Eduardo then people will demand it. Pedro, also of Barcelona, dived as well in the Super Cup and so I don't think there's any logic to Eduardo's case. We have clear proof that from behind he was touched on his right leg.

There is no common sense. I believe it was a more emotional decision really because if Uefa had said before the season starts, 'Listen, let's get together and no matter what happens in Uefa games, if we suspect someone of diving he will be punished' then you could say, ok, we've always been told they will do that. But suddenly, out from nowhere because it was an emotional situation in Scotland, we have this situation and have to live with that."

Medical: Iniesta and Marquez ready for next game

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona players Rafael Márquez (30) and Andrés Iniesta (25) will get the green light by the medical staff next week and will that way be available for Barcelona's next match, the league game against Getafe.

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Iniesta could play some minutes as substitute in the Getafe game and depending on how he feels after that, the Spanish midfielder could start the Champions League game against Inter Milan on 16 September.

Márquez suffered a fibre rupture in his left calf, the lower backpart of the leg, during a training session in the United States on Wednesday 5 August and was then expected to be out for ten to fifteen days.

Iniesta tore a quadriceps muscle on the front of his right thigh during the league game against Villarreal on Sunday 10 May and although he played the Champions League final against Manchester United on Wednesday 27 May, he has never fully recovered from that injury. On Friday 5 June, the medical staff of the Spanish football federation confirmed that the player has torn a muscle in his thigh and he was then expected to be out for the next six to eight weeks.

Puyol considering Barcelona exit

Madrid sports tabloid As claims that Barcelona central defender and Spanish international Carles Puyol (31) still hasn't made a decision on his future.

Barcelona would have offered the catalan centre-back, whose contract expires at the end of the current season, an extension for two more years with a lower fixed salary and higher incentives.

Puyol would be postponing a decision and reportedly wants to wait and see what will happen once Márquez has recovered from his injury and Chygrynskiy has settled in.

If he doesn't get enough playing time this season, Puyol would be unlikely to sign a new contract and would prefer to move to a club where he would be a fixed starter (read more

[2008] Barcelona thought about Eto'o-Robinho swap

this post was published exactly one year ago:

Madrid sports tabloid Marca claims that Barcelona has this summer been seriously interested in then Real Madrid left winger and Brazilian international Robinho (24) (read more here).

Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola saw the Brazilian as the ideal player to replace Ronaldinho at the left wing and Barcelona considered offering in exchange Barcelona forward and Cameroonian international Samuel Eto'o (27) to Real Madrid. Because Barcelona president Joan Laporta didn't want to let go Eto'o, a formal swap offer was in the end never made.

Messi: "I am great because of my team-mates"

Barcelona player Lionel Messi gave an interview to Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo.

One month into the new season and already two trophies...
Everything has gone very fast. You start and the next thing you know you're already competing for two trophies as a result of the hard work of last season. It's good to start like that, although it's hard. If you look at the calendar, we won't have a moment to breathe until January or February... Pfff, we will have to make the best of it because it will be a tough season.

But it is less tough when you enjoy yourself...
We are having a good time and you can see that, right? We are having a good time because the football we play is made to make the footballer have fun. But we are also suffering, of course. Nobody should think that we aren't exhausted at the end of a game.

How does it feel to be the best player in the world?
This team has made me big. This Barça has made me grow and makes me better every day. All those with whom I had the honour to play have taught me something and this group makes you better. For me, that is very clear: I am great because of them. All those individual trophies should have copies, reproductions, one for each team-mate. That's the way we work, as one, we are one and that way it is easier to stand out and to do what you like to do. Someone is covering for you when you are trying to make an action that could be decisive but that also carries some risk. It's great to ba part of a team like this Barça.

What is Iniesta lacking to win individual trophies?
There's nothing lacking, he's a crack already! But because he does everything with such ease, it seems like there's nothing to it. But he has everything needed to win win individual prizes.

How is Ibrahimovic doing?
Very well. Ibra knows that Barça is a new world. It wasn't easy for him to adapt to a team that plays by heart, with an enormous quality, that has won everything last season... He wants to learn from the group and this is valued. He has a lot of qualities and he will add a lot of things to the team. He's acting in a modest way and he has adapted very well to the group.

The group is missing Eto'o?
Of course we miss him, every team would miss him. What Samu gave us on the pitch was incredible, he was the first one to put pressure, always going forward and scoring goals like nobody can. He was very important for the team. But now he's at Inter and I'm sure he will do great. I talk with Samu every now and then, I like to know how things are going for him.

Bendter rejected Barcelona for Arsenal renewal

British tabloid The Daily Mirror claims that Arsenal forward and Denmark international Nicklas Bendtner (21) rejected the interest of Barcelona, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich before signing a new five-year contract at Arsenal.

Asked about the issue, the player's father and agent Thomas Bendtner is quoted by the tabloid as confirming the interest of several European top clubs: "Many clubs wanted to sign Nicklas, and some of them are among the biggest clubs in the world. It would have been very easy to find a new, great club for him, and when the biggest clubs join in, then it is really flattering for Nicklas.

But still Nicklas was never in doubt, that what he wanted the most was to stay in Arsenal. It has taken a long time to finish the contract, but the two parties have never doubted, that they wanted each other in the end. He is so happy for his new contract.

And the most important thing is, that he, in Arsene Wenger has a manager, who shows him a lot of confidence. Wenger gives Nicklas space and time to develop both as a person and a player, and that is really unique on football's top level. Nicklas feels, it is ideal for him to stay in Arsenal."

Bojan hoping to become fixed starter one day

Speaking to journalist, Barcelona player Bojan Krkic has commented on the first weeks of the new season:

"I was surprised that I got injured because I was feeling good and I didn't expect it to happen. But now I want to focus all my energy on recovering.

Coming back for the next league game against Getafe seems not really possible because I was told I will be out for 15 to 20 days. But when I'm starting to work on my recovery, I know I will want to play as soon as possible.

Apart from the injury, the season has started very well, I had a lot of playing time and scored some goals. That's why this feels especially bad, because it comes at a bad moment.

I nevertheless feel supported by the coach. He values my work and that of all the home-grown players. I know what has lead me to be promoted to the first team and that's what I also want to do one day at the Camp Nou. I'm very hopeful to become a fixed starter one day.

I am also happy for the first goal of ibrahimovic. I know what it is whenpeople have set their hopes on a striker and you feel that that goal doesn't come. By scoring this first goal he will feel relieved and from now on he will stzart scoring naturally."

Messi & Iniesta until 2016

Catalan sports newspaper Sport reports that FC Barcelona is close to signing extensions that will keep stars Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta with the team until 2016. Both players are being rewarded for their elevated play over the past year, although another major motivating factor is to raise each player's buyout clause to levels beyond even the reaches of big spenders Manchester City and Real Madrid.

The deal with Messi is all but signed, according to Sport. The Argentine will receive a base pay of around 10 million euros, just higher than the 9.5 million euros Barca pays to newly-acquired striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, Barca will need to spend more money to reach that number going forward, as Messi no longer qualifies for a foreigner-based tax rate. As such, Barca and Messi will be responsible for a 43% tax rate, as opposed to the current 23% tax rate.

Beyond the new base salary and undisclosed performance bonuses, the new agreement will call for Messi's buyout clause to be raised from its current level of 150 million euros to 200 million euros. It is hoped that this number will be high enough to discourage deep-pocketed clubs from poaching the Barca youth product, but it is thought that the new buyout figure is intended to demonstrate the will of the player as much as a financial disincentive.

Along with a new salary and buyout clause, the new contract will extend the agreement between the player and the club from 2014 to 2016.

Negotiations with Andres Iniesta are not as advanced as those with Messi, but he is in line for a similar deal to the one that the Argentine will sign in the coming weeks. Barca now sees Iniesta as part of the team's top player tier. As such, he will receive a salary similar to, but likely a bit lower than, those given to Messi and Ibrahimovic. Along with the the new salary, Iniesta will likely agree to extend his contract until 2016 and to raise his buyout clause from 150 million euros to 200 million euros.

The deals will bring both players close to "Barca for life" status. Iniesta will be 32 years old in 2016 and Messi will be 29.

Big names prefer La Liga over Premier League

author: Mike Collett
source: Reuters

date: 1 September 2009
editing: fcbtransfers.blogspot.com

Premier League clubs spent 119 million pounds less on transfers this close season compared to last year, according to a report into their transfer dealings.

Geoff Mesher, head of the Forensic Sports Industry Team at accountants KPMG, told that Premier League clubs' net spending fell significantly from 210 million pounds in 2008 to 81 million pounds this year before the deadline closed on Tuesday.

"There are a number of reasons, but it is not just because of the world financial situation," he said. "Football clubs are very powerful, independent businesses but, apart from Manchester City in England and Real Madrid in Europe, most clubs have spent significantly less.

As far as English clubs are concerned there are a number of reasons, including the exchange rate between the pound and the euro and the tax situation in England. The lack of big name players arriving in the England might appear strange given the recent success of English clubs in Europe, but the reasons are purely financial."

Mesher said the struggle by Premier League clubs to attract or retain big name players reflected the attraction of Spain's La Liga to many players. "Our analysis of the recent transfer window has revealed a reduction in Premier League transfer funds paid to non-English clubs supporting the argument that teams have struggled to entice big names from overseas.

It is no coincidence that the majority of Manchester City's big summer signings were purchased from within the English top flight. For the time being in the international transfer market La Liga and, more specifically Real Madrid, appear to have the upper hand on the Premiership."

Messi will be offered renewal until 2016

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona wants to extend the contract of Barcelona right wing attacker and Argentinian international Lionel Messi (22) until 2016.

Although the renewal negotiations would already be well-advanced and Messi would get a pay rise and a buyout clause of 200 million euros, the club would now also want to propose the player - when he returns from South-America - to extend the duration of his current contract, that expires in 2014, for two more years.

"There was interest. I just think that it would have been impossible. I'm afraid that Real Madrid would never have let me go to Barcelona. But that's all history. I am glad to play at Bayern Munich now."

Laporta on Guardiola, Chygrynskiy and Eto'o

Speaking to Spanish radio station RNE, Barcelona president Joan Laporta talked about Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola, last Barcelona signing Dmytro Chygrynskiy and former Barcelona player Samuel Eto'o.

Guardiola
From outside the club, people have always tried to destabilize the club and myself – the same happened with Rijkaard before – but I deny that we have a bad relationship. My relationship with Pep couldn't be better. At a personal level, I admire him. And as a coach, I will be eternally grateful because he is the key for this team living its best moment in the history, although Txiki and the players also contributed a lot.

Chygrynskiy
Guardiola didn't have any doubts, he had been totally impressed by the player. There were no other options because Pep was very clear in his decision. I don't think this transfer will affect the situation of Puyol. The captain will keep his place since Guardiola will use the rotations in a correct way.

Eto'o
I am sure he will be very motivated when he returns to the Camp Nou because he is a born winner. But unlike when he played against Madrid, he doesn't need to prove anything here because he knows the players, the coaches and the president have valued him and still value him. He is a player who has given everything on the pitch and he is an excellent person.

Whatever happens in the games against Inter, our opinion about him will not change. Eto'o has been at Barcelona for five years and he was there at every important event. When Eto'o was not there because of an injury, that reflected on the team and when he was there, we won everything. When I said a while ago that he didn't pick up the phone, that was because he was not in Spain at that time. Now we are regularly in contact.

Mourinho almost Barcelona coach last year

Speaking to Spanish radio station RNE, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that current Inter Milan manager José Mourinho was close to succeeding Frank Rijkaard as Barcelona coach last year:

"I talked with him when he was here the other day for the game against Sporting and I told him that this is his home. I also asked him not to take too many notes so we would still have a chance to beat Inter...

I have to say I like Mourinho a lot. It is a great coach, someone who has a lot of qualities, a man of the club, where we have great memories of him and who at some point was a possible manager. He would have been our coach if we wouldn't have thought that Guardiola was the best option."

Henrique officially presented as Racing player

Barcelona player Henrique (22) was yesterday officially presented as new player of Racing Santander, the club he joins on a one-year loan.

Speaking at a press conference, Henrique said that he saw the move as a great chance to show his skills: "I'm happy to be here. I know I'm joining a good club, that I will have to work a lot here and I am convinced that I will be happy here. I am aware of the expectations and I hope that my efforts will help to reach the objectives and to bring joy to the fans."

[2008] Real Sociedad interested in Victor Vazquez

this post was published exactly one year ago:

Basque regional newspaper Noticias de Gipuzkoa claimed last week that Spanish secod division club real Sociedad was interested Barcelona Atlètic attacker Víctor Vázquez (21), who started the pre-season with the first team (read more here).

Barcelona and Sociedad had been holding negotiations on a loan deal. Because Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola has an excellent relationship with Real Sociedad manager Juan Manuel Lillo (read more here), the Basque club was seen as the ideal team for Vázquez to keep on growing.

Asked about the rumours, Vázquez' agent Horacio Gaggioli confirmed the information to the newspaper: "There are several clubs that have shown interest and Real Sociedad is one of them. We're talking now with Barcelona. I'm unaware if the clubs are also directly negotiating.

Víctor has the ambition to play in the first division but who doesn't consider Real Sociedad to be a first division club? I don't know if the two managers have a good relationship but if that's the case, I guess everything will be more easy. But for him to leave before the end of the transfer window, things will have to change quickly since Barcelona now prefers to keep him."

Gaggioli told Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo that he had also been talking with Real Sociedad. In the end, Víctor Vázque stayed with Barcelona Atlètic.

Medical: Possible knee injury for Ibrahimovic

Swedish tabloids Expressen and Aftonbladet claim that Barcelona player Zlatan Ibrahimovic (27) has suffered a minor knee injury during Monday's league game against Sporting Gijón.

Bacelona's medical staff would have sent a medical report about the injury to the doctors of the swedish national team asking them to examine the injury.

Barcelona didn't confirm the injury but reportedly wants the player, who will be doing individual recovery exercises, not to take part in Sweden's World Cup qualifying game against Hungary next weekend.

Pedro: "The national team? Why not?"

Barcelona player Pedro gave an interview to Tenerife local newspaper La Opinión de Tenerife.

Tell us about your new contract. What does it mean to be a professional Barça player now?
First of all, it's a dream come true. It means being a full part of the first team, so it's not possible to play with the B team anymore. It's another chance and I hope to take it. It's a new opportunity to learn even more.

Who told you the news?
The coach publicly said that he wanted me to stay and then my representatives started negotiating with the club.

And then you had to sign the contract. What did Laporta tell you?
He congratulated me and said he was proud of my work, especially because I was another youth player that became a part of the first team.

The contract proves you right in a way. You have always said you thought you had a place in this team and now you're there...
Yes, I have always said that. I had this mindset for quite a long time and look where it has gotten me, I have reached my goal. But things don't stop here. You have to continue.

Where is your limit? Is playing with the national team a realistic desire?
The national team? Why not? It is very difficult, there is a lot of competition and the coach seems to have a more or less fixed squad but I always want more.

You are very modest but at the same time very ambitious.
Of course, you have to be ambitious and long for more if you want to keep on making progress.

You have never had it easy, but will it be easier this season now that Barcelona didn't buy a winger?
No. I have always said that I am relaxed about that because I am used to competition. And not just some competition, but competition from the best players in the world. In that cases you have to look to the future with optimism, believe in your qualities and be aware that the coach also believes in you. I don't see competition as something negative. It's good for the team and in my opinion also good for the individual player.

Pacheco: "When I was a kid, I supported Madrid"

Liverpool reserves forward and former Barcelona youth player Dani Pacheco (18) gave an interview to his club's official website. Some excerpts.

What's it like being recognised?
It feels good when you are with your family or friends or girlfriend. People always say, 'When are you going to be in the first team?' I say, 'I don't know, I don't know - ask Rafa!' It has happened more since this pre-season.

Which stadium would you love to play in?
I'd like to play at Anfield in the Premier League or Champions League, but apart from that it's the Bernabeu. When I was a kid I supported Real Madrid. I think it's the best stadium in Spain and maybe one of the best in the world. I lived so far away in Malaga and Barcelona so I never went to games but I've been a few times now.

Which team's results do you look out for?
Malaga, because it's my home, and Real Madrid. I think they will probably win La Liga this season. They have signed most of the best players! Maybe they haven't signed defensive players but they will be okay!

Career high so far?
The best thing has been signing for Liverpool and since then the two pre-seasons I have spent with the first team - especially the one just gone. Playing with all the star names and going to Singapore and Bangkok with all those fanatical people. I knew it would be good but I didn't expect there to be so many fans.

Career low?
Thankfully I haven't had many. Maybe when I left home at 12 years old to play for Barcelona. But since then I've never been injured and everything has got better, better, better. Touch wood.

Area to improve on?
Everything! I am only 18 years old. The main things though are my strength and my work with the defenders. I also need to make easier passes.

Your main attributes?
Playing between the lines, trying to get the ball all the time, getting assists and tryng to score goals.

A record budget expected for 2009-2010

Barcelona gave last month an overview of the club's financial situation.

FC Barcelona ended the year 08/09 with a net profit of 8,8 million euros. The net result is obtained from the subtraction between operating revenue (384.8 million) and operating expenses (362.4 million) and financial expenses (13.6 million).

In one year, revenue is up 51 million (from 333.8 to 384.8), resulting mainly from the increase in box office and new marketing and media contracts. The costs also have increased, especially in terms of sports salaries, which have risen from 162.6 million to 198.6.

The debt situation is positive (35.2 million), for the first time since 2003. Net debt remained stable despite increased activity by 15%. In this sense, Barcelona chief executive Joan Oliver has noted: "We have not even made one euro debt to buy a player."

The budget that is expected for this season is a record budget of 405 million euros and operating expenditure of 375 million, so an operating profit of 30 million. With these projections, operating profits have increased 144 million in the last seven years. This budget would make FC Barcelona the richest club in the world.

Cesc could arrive in June...or December

Catalan sports newspaper Sport reports that there is a chance that FC Barcelona transfer target Cesc Fabregas could join his home side as early as this December, depending on the results of his current team, Arsenal. If the Londoners cannot get past the group stage of the Champions League and/or are doing poorly in the Premiership, the team may finally cede to the player's wishes and allow him to move back to Barca.

The Champions League issue should be settled by December 9, the end of group play. Counting in Arsenal's favor, however, is the fact that its group is particularly weak (featuring only Standard Liege, AZ, and Olympicos).

The Premiership is another story altogether, with Barca reportedly believing that Arsenal does not have the manpower to hold its own amidst the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, and even the restocked Manchester City.

If Arsenal fails in one or both of these efforts, it is possible that the team will look to regroup early. Cesc may also make a more concerted effort to leave if it is clear that there are no trophies in his future at Arsenal.

Either way, Barca could be in a good position to bring back their former youth player before the calendar reaches 2010.

Barcelona has option to buy Xavi Torres back

Speaking to Catalan sports paper Sport, Málaga defensive midfielder Xavi Torres (22), who played last season with Barcelona Atlètic, has revealed that Barcelona has an option to buy him back:

"What a debut it was. My first official game with Málaga, we defeat Atlético 3-0 and I score a goal.

And I could have scored another won with a volley in the first half. Of course I'm happy, what do you think... Although I'm keeping my feet on the ground. I have always believed in my qualities but I honestly didn't expect I would start on Saturday. My former team-mates called to congratulate me. Pedrito was the first one.

To play at Barça is incredible, something no player expects. I wished it could have been possible, but I wanted to start in the first division. It was a joint decision between Guardiola and myself, but there's a buy back option for three million euros and for Barça, three millions is nothing."

Casillas: "Eto'o is better than Ibrahimovic"

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas gave an interview to Madrid sports tabloid As. Some excerpts.

Madrid has a better squad than Barcelona?
Sincerely, if you compare it player by player, I think we have. But Barcelona also has a great team that already showed what it can do and that gave me a lot of healthy jealousy. For example when seeing all the trophies that have been given to my friend Xavi. Our aim is now to develop our own style by playing as good as possible.

Will it take a lot of time before the new players and the old ones start to know each other?
We have to do it quick. In Madrid there is no patience and no time. People want results now.

The Liga is a two-horse race?
In theory, yes, but I'm sure there will be other teams who will join in.

You will miss Eto'o?
(laughs) Not at all. I am delighted that he went to Italy. As far as i'm concerned, he's better than Ibrahimovic.

Ribery says Barcelona was interested this summer

Speaking to French football weekly magazine France Football, Bayern Munich attacker and French international Franck Ribéry (26) has again confirmed that Barcelona showed interest in him this summer and said that he wants to play in Spain one day:

"Believe me, if I had really wanted to go this summer, I would have done it and you would have heard me. But my intention has never been to have an arm wrestling contest with Bayern...

I want to play with the best possible team to win titles. That's what motivates me. At Bayern today, and maybe elsewhere tomorrow. Real Madrid was not the only one interested. I think it was the first time in my career that there were so many candidates: Barça, Manchester United, Inter Milan and especially Chelsea also wanted me.

As my future is concerned, absolutely nothing has been sorted out so far. Bayern officials didn't propose to me any extension. Maybe we will talk. I have never closed any door. My preference is nevertheless to move to Spain. One day I will play in the Liga. Is there an agreement between Bayern and Real for a transfer next summer? Never, I deny it. That is fake."

Chygrynskiy: "This transfer was destiny"

New Barcelona player Dmytro Chygrynskiy gave an interview to the club's official media.

Welcome. I suppose your first few days with Barça have been long ones.
They have been very emotional days, since I landed in Barcelona I have been astounded by the way Barça and the fans have treated me. It has all been very nice.

How did the negotiations go?
I had to be a realist, ever since I learned of Barça's interest I remained prudent. In fact I only started believing it once it was official, before that it was all just rumours.

Is there any past or present Barcelona player that you have admired?
A player I'd single out, from about 7 or 8 years ago, was Luis Enrique. As for the current players, they're my colleagues so I don't want to say I like one player better than another. But the first time I played against Barça, a year ago, I was impressed by the way Iniesta played.

Do you know Luis Enrique also wore 21?
No, I didn't know Luis Enrique had the same shirt number as I have now. It's nice to know, I like that.

Do you think the way Barça play will suit you?
Barça play the best football in the world right now. And I am sure players' careers progress much faster when they play for a club like Barça.

Tell us briefly about how you started in football.
I've always played football. It's as if I was born with the ball in my hands, if I can put it like that. There was a school in my town, but it was small. When I was thirteen I went to study in a more professional school, I made a lot of progress there and when I was 14 I joined the Shakhtar youth set-up.

Curiously, your first European game was against Barça.
Life brings these odd coincidences. It must be symbolic that when I was 17 or 18 my first five minutes were against Barça. I like to think that in a certain way it was destiny and that's why I am where I am now.

What kind of person is Dmytro Chygrynskiy?
I can't describe myself objectively. Only others can do that. But I have always tried to keep a cool head and be relaxed in any situation, without going to extremes.

What are your hobbies?
I like to read, but it depends on my mood. I have a university education, a finished Company Management degree, specialising in finance, and I'd like to carry on studying all my life, just getting better every day.

Keita: "I have adapted to the way of playing"

Speaking to journalists after the league game against Sporting Gijón yesterday, Barcelona players Seydou Keita and Xavi commented on the match.

Keita
"It was a little difficult after having played in Monaco, on a bad pitch, for 120 minutes. We all wanted that first goal of Ibra to come because we need him. And if he can adapt quickly, the better for the team. To play at Barça, you need some time to adapt to the way of playing. I also had to go through it but I am very happy now."

Xavi
"The team has just won two super cups and it wasn't an easy game. The game could have become complicated but we have given everything. Sporting is a team that plays well but we kept everything under control. Generally speaking, we are working well and keeping the modesty. Ibra is a goalscorer and he likes to score. This was his first goal with Barça and we are happy for him because he's working hard."

[2008] Eto'o rejected offers from Lyon and Kuruvchi

this post was published exactly one year ago:

Asked about the rumours having linked him with a summer move to Olympique Lyon (read more here), Barcelona forward and Cameroonian international Samuel Eto'o (27) admitted in an interview with French television station TF1 that he had received an offer from the French champions:

"Lyon made a serious effort to sign me. I talked with officials of the club and was tempted. At that time it wasn't possible but you cannot exclude anything for the future."

Regarding the rumpours linking him with Uzbek club Kuruvchi (read more here), Eto'o said they made him an offer that blew him away: "They offered me 25 million dollar to stay there for two or three months. I hallucinated with the proposal but as a player of the Cameroonian national team I have to be at the highest possible level and therefore I have to play with a big club. I couldn't accept that offer."

Defeat won't lead to last-minute transfer

My Five Cents (Sporting)

- We won without Yaya, Iniesta, Henry, Messi, and Abidal for most of the game. Sporting is not the best team in the league, but it's in the same category with half the liga teams and copa del rey opponents.

- We won with two youth players on the wings.

- Maxwell did some funny stuff, but he showed he is starting to gel well.

- Pique, Puyol and Alves were up to their standards.

- Busquets had lot of ups and downs. Contributed perfectly in offensive built-up (though he lost possession in dangerous places), defensively he still lacks positioning discipline.

- Keita showed again he is a reliable option in the midfield. Covering behind his team-mates when they go forward, being an outlet for Xavi and making himself available all the time to exchange passes positively. Earned back possession, scored, almost assisted another. Man of the match for me. Not a flashy player, but he know his job and do it perfectly.

- Xavi: brilliance.

- Pedro was good as well. His transition were interesting so as his contribution in possession. Again, no need for Mata.

- Bojan's moral was high tonight. One of the reasons could be that the transfer period ended without buying a new winger. He feels he is valued and is carrying his responsibilities. For the first time, he showed a "tough guy" mentality, not a childish fragility. Impressive. He is the winger that we signed for free.

- Ibra scored, kind of. He was much better than in his previous game. In general, he had a very good game. This goal is a very important one. More to come.

International break now. I hate it. Especially that Messi will have a butchers’ game against Brazil.

3 points in the pocket. Won in style.

Ibrahimovic: "Little by little I'm getting there"

Speaking to journalists after the league game against Sporting Gijón yesterday, Barcelona players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Víctor Valdés commented on the match.

Ibrahimovic
"The team-mates are helping me a lot. I'm not yet feeling 100 per cent but I am happy because I played 90 minutes and little by little I'm getting in shape. The team isn't yet 100 per cent either but we wish to get there as soon as possible so that everything works the way we want it."

Valdés
"Winning the first game of the league season was important to catch some confidence ahead of the break due to international games. By winning today we have shown that we want to defend our title. But you have to go step by step and game by game, and keeping respect for the opponent."

Sporting coach Preciado: "Keita hurt us a lot"

Sporting Gijón manager Manuel Preciado shared his thoughts after the league game against Barcelona at a press conference:

"I leave with a bad taste in my mouth. We did things fairly well, especially in the first half. We almost neutralized Barça in every aspect of their game, but they killed us at set pieces. We were not solid enough. At least, that is something we can easily work on, the game itself wasn't a total disaster.

We were courageous and we wanted to attack. We had some clear chances, maybe we deserved to score first. But sometimes you want to, but you can't. They were stronger at set pieces. Keita is tremendously powerful and he hurt us a lot. Barcelona looks to be ready for another succesful season because they have such a spectacular power. Without being in great form, they have already won two trophies, so you can imagine what it will be like when they find the rhythm..."

Pique: "It will be more fun with Chygrynskiy"

Speaking to journalists after the league game against Sporting Gijón yesterday, Barcelona players Dani Alves and Gerard Piqué commented on the match.

Alves
"We needed those points. Starting a season well is important, and even more so this time because all our direct rivals had won their games.

Ibra scored his first goal but we have to give him time, he just arrived. He still has to get to know his team-mates, he needs to keep on working and then the goals will come. We are not worried about Real Madrid. We are focusing on our own job and on doing things in a good way. If we do a good job ourselves, we shouldn't worry."

Piqué
"It looks like things are still working this year. We trained on set pieces the day of the match and it worked out fine. They gave us the points and we are happy for that. Sometimes this is the way to do it. We are keeping the same mind-set like last year. We are only thinking about keep on winning.

It's normal that we are tired after the Super Cup. We played for 120 minutes on a pitch that wasn't really good. But the team felt well and we were in the game from the beginning. Chygrynskiy? It will be more fun. Every one will have to give his best to have a place in the team."

Guardiola: "Bojan made a little jump forward"

Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola shared his thoughts after the league game against Sporting Gijón at a press conference:

"You can play better, you can play worse. Some things didn't work out. Sporting created us a lot of problems. It's a team I feel a lot of sympathy for. They have a coach who transmits courage and ambition. I'm sure they will have a good season.

The game happened like we had expected after the game of last Friday. I can't blame the team anything. It gives me confidence to see how they have played. Hard work is the only thing we cannot lose and the players have again showed that today. You can play good or bad, but everyone has done his job.

The generosity of Keita has no limits. It's a player who gives a lot and who grows in a game. He will play a lot this year. I am also happy that Ibrahimovic has scored. He was able to play for 90 minutes and that's a good sign. He worked a lot today. Sooner or later he will do very well. He's still in the process of adapting. Little by little he'll get there.

We'll recover Bojan as soon as possible because we need him. I have the feeling he made a little jump forward. He's intuitive, smart, I have a lot of confidence in him and I want to give him playing time. We shouldn't become obsessed with injuries. It's true we have a small squad but we have quality players. So when someone gets injured we only should think about the recovery, knowing that we have people to replace him.

If the press wants to help us, I think they should stop the continuous comments about how many trophies we will win. Let it be. That's not the way this works. If you want to help us, stop this. If we win one title this season, it will have been a good year."
