All media yesterday claimed that Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés (27) will renew his contract, that expires in the summer of 2010.
Barcelona would have raised their last offer and a deal would have been found on a year salary of around 7 million euro gross. Spanish news agency EFE claims that this is more than the double of his current wage.
The duration of the new contract is not yet clear. This morning, most media claimed that the new contract was until 2014. Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo and Spanish news site El Confidencial claimed that it was until 2015. Catalan sport paper Sport first claimed that Barcelona had offered the goalkeeper to sign until 2016 but that the goalkeeper in the end decided to sgn until 2014. Later today, they changed that to 2015.
Sport claimed that the negotiations were picked up yesterday morning with a meeting between Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain and Barcelona director of foorball Raúl Sanllehí and the player's father José Manuel Valdés. Later, the player's agent Ginés Carvajal joined in and a final agreement would have been reached late last night.
El Mundo Deportivo on the other hand claims that the deal was agreed on during telephone talks between Txiki and Carvajal. The paper claims that Barcelona president Joan Laporta could have talked with Valdés and that this would have made a new opening in the talks. Madrid sports tabloid As claims that Carvajal informed Begiristain with a short phone call that they dropped their previous demands.
Sport claimed that the deal would be made public this morning, Madrid sports tabloid Marca that it would happen today, but so far no official announcement has been published. Barcelona president Joan Laporta nevertheless told journalists today that things look good: "I can only say that I have been assured by the people who are dealing with this that we're on the good way. So I think we'll find a solution that is satisfactory for all."

I think barca won't sign anybody this summer at all...NO RIBERY, NO VILLA, NO ROBINHO, NO ZHIRKOV, NO BRUNO ALVES and NO ASENJO!!! I don't know what is Txiki Begiristain doing?!!! I know we have plenty of time till the end of the transfer period and also I know we have a perfect team already and we won a treble but we definitely need to strength some part of the squad... it seems that villa is heading to madrid and Ibra's price tag is too high so who's gonna be our CF if Eto'o goes?!!! About left wing, Henry will be 31-32 next season, Ribery is heading to madrid and I don't think Man city will let go of Robinho either... So who's gonna play the left wing roll?!!! From my point of view, Barca isn't that active as it should be in the transfer market and instead they are close to losing some great players like Yaya Toure, Bojan!!! I'm little bit worry about next season and I hope everything turns out well... BARCA 4 LIFE
WE must sign aguero !!!
no villa no ibra no stupidity
Aguero is 21-22 years old
he is allready in the level of supercvlass players in 5 years he is 26 villa will be 33 !!
go for aguero Guys
ALl start Aguero Revulation
7 million euros. I'm sorry but that's a complete waste. He's making the equivalent of £115,000 per week in England. Manchester United's two highest paid players Rio Ferdinand and Dimitar Berbatov make £110,000 per week. We're basically paying him £25,000 per week for being Catalan.
We would not have won the treble without him. We would not have beat Chelsea w/o him. I'm not sure how much that is worth but w/e
i agree with you, james... his salary is off the charts...
@hadi... i think with henrique, milito's recovery, zhirkov and llorente coming in and gudjohnson and caceres(loan) leaving, we will have a good competitive squad...
And i think we can manage to bring these players without breaking the bank.
For the DM position during ACN i think several players can play there, like marquez, pique, busquets... I know Yaya is the best, but hopefully he will return unharmed... ;)
If we sign the amazing Zhirkov, everybody will be happy. Henry can play on the striker, and we can sign Llorente too, don't forget that.
So if we sign Zhirkov and Llorente, we have great bus-breaking options. Zhirkov makes us utilize the whole pitch with his wing play on the left and Llorente is excellent to have in the box on crosses, free kicks and corners (which we always get a ton of during the game).
ps: i forget to mention eto'o's exit....
ps2: @lebanese... i totally agree with you... zhirkov and llorente is all we need...
How do you know who would not have won the treble without him? Are you omniscient?
I guess we wouldn't have won the treble without Gudjohnsen either but we're trying to offload him for some reason. He saved us in 2 games earlier on in the season, that's 6 points right there. Madrid would have been tied with a week before the second Clasico.
Just because we won with him doesn't mean we need to overpay him. That's why players get bonuses for winning competitions. He's worth about 30-40,000 per week less. He may deserve a bonus this year, which he got like all our players got. However we're going to be paying extra money on the contract for 5 years.
Oh, and when people bitch about why we can't sign as many players as they want, this is why. We just wasted about 10 extra million euros over 5 years to keep Valdes.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH JAMES!!!!!!
i think this is a big mistake...
are there any goalkeepers in the world who earns more than Valdes with this new contract?
Yes, Casillas apparently has 9.
Valdes is just below Iker and Buffon and i feel he should be paid high. may be we went a little high but he deserves it. come on, who do u wanna have? Cech??? Reina??? they are no gud. Valdes is the best Barca can get. just be happy he dint leave us bcoz we would be having big problems in getting an equally gud keeper. Pool n Chelsea might ask 25-30 mil for them? u willing to pay absurd money for those 2?
Casillas must have gotten a raise last summer or this year. I remember he was making about the same as Buffon. If Valdes did get 7 million, he's making more than Buffon now.
@sashi
He was NEVER going to leave, that's not a legitimate reason for overpaying him. He still has a year left on his contract, worst case scenario, he plays through his contract year while we sign Asenjo to compete with him and then decide next summer. Nobody else would have even offered him 5 or 6 million per year.
There's no logic for paying him more than he's worth. I mean Messi's priceless to us. Why don't we just pay Messi 15 million a year, or 20 million a year? Because if we pay him 9 million it already makes him one of the highest paid players in the world and very happy. Same logic with Valdes. Sure we can afford 7 million for him (and only we can, nobody else rates him anywhere near we do) but clearly on the open market he's worth A LOT LESS, and we could have paid him a salary that's higher than anyone else is willing and still saved 2 million a year. Paying him that extra premium is as good as throwing money out the window.
We should give him a small raise but not more than double what he earns now. We really really need to get Asenjo, maybe they should both get similar wages and based on performances see who gets more first team action. I have a feeling Asenjo is already the better keeper, the guy exudes confidence, he reminds me of iker.
Don't forget it's gross. Guess some other wages mentioned here are net. But he could have done anyway with 2 millions less.
i totally agree with you james, the board is so blind when it comes to valdes.
james who are you to say if valdes deserves to be paid that much or not
i don't believe in goalkeepers getting paid so much they do the less work in a team especially in barca where we have all the possession but i'm glad this crap is over now let's get yaya renewed and on to getting some players.
oh and next year i have my money on rosell wining presidency but i'm a little bit worried about his transfer methods. big money spender, well that's what i heard.. hope it's not true cause i would hate to see we go into debt we can't get out of. most i will ever spend on a player in 45mil.
It's such a shame that Laporta can't stay any longer. He has been the best president FC Barcelona has ever had. He gets us genius players and makes sure we have no debt and also keeps the Barca methodology of making stars from our youth system and always playing the same way. I think Barca is the only European team that never changes they play no matter who the opposition is.
