Barcelona considering to sell the pitch

Catalan radio station Catalunya Ràdio claims that Barcelona is considering to sell the pitch of the Camp Nou.

Because of the U2 concerts, the pitch will be replaced this summer (read more
here) and the club is now looking at the option of selling the grass of the historical treble to the fans.

If the pitch would be put for sale, the revenues will go to the foundation of FC Barcelona.

Oh, come on. This is ridiculously huge, or hugely ridiculous...I can't decide

As long as they encase it in a nice collectible container, stamped a seal of authenticity on it with a certificate included, then market it correctly. I think it's a great idea.

I'm of the opinion that FC Barcelona is a small player in the Asia market. Over here, we have all sort of EPL fans clubs. They sell jerseys, souvenirs etc. all coming from the clubs itself. That way fans don't have to travel to the UK to buy authentic items and clubs make money, they'll organise matchday live viewing (night over here) and still people come.

So to conclude, the potential for FCB to generate new revenue is always there, all it needs is them coming over here and organise something.

To anybody directly connected with the management of FCB, I implore you to lay some groundwork to market FCB more over here before RM do it first by marketing their galaticos. Barca do have a headstart by winning the treble while RM is current in doldrums.

I think they're now focusing on the US, buj...

buj, barca is already huge in japan and other asian countries are catching up esp since they won the treble (asian fans like winners lol), but youre right in that in malaysia, singapore and thailand epl is still the big thing. btw nike shops all over asia carry barcelona merchandise, limited yes but available still the same (and besides, theres the internet to satisfy all your blaugrana cravings :D)

p.s. also vietnam has a big barca following..anyway, last season barca toured japan, hongkong and was it dubai (one ME country i forgot which)..there was an asian tour scheduled this summer but it was cancelled i heard at pep's request so the players can rest and train well for next season,a very wise move imo. be patient, the asian market is slowly being tapped and anyway madrid has long been ahead in this aspect, it started with Galactico part 1.

To xavi. What I'm implying here is not only tours. I don't know where you're from but do you know we can only watch La liga somewhere from 2am up to 6am. Unless you're a hardcore fan, I doubt you'll stay up that late considering a few hours after that you'll have to go to work, as Barca fixture is almost always on Europe Sunday night and we're GMT+7 or 8.

As for your condescending remark about Asian liking winners, hell I've always supported FCB and Tottenham ever since Kluivert/Rivaldo for FCB and Garth Crooks/Archibald for spurs whether they're up there or not.

Unlike EPL, where was your La liga "Score Tonight" or any show regarding spanish liga specifically. None. How do you expect Barca to become a familiar name with tweens, future followers of Barca, when all they hear is MU this, Liverpool that.

lol dude chill, i didnt mean to generalise okay? am not slagging asians here as i'm one myself..tours bring the club to the fans, its a great marketing tool, plus ive no doubt asia is high on laporta's priorities just that its not gonna happen overnight as it requires resources we may not have atm. i read before that barca tv will be franchised here or something but they were still looking for local partners at the time etc, if that happens we'll get the games direct plus all those programs you want..as for the time zones that cant be helped..i'm a uni student btw, the early morn games are as hard for me as for others, i've dozed off in class many times, i dont mind though..the lack of la liga shows sucks but there are many ways to keep updated, and finally theres an imbalance in league popularity cos la liga in general arent as aggressive as the epl in the marketing aspect, dont they even have a common budget for this? la liga doesnt seem to have one so fcb is pretty much on its own in this thing thats why i will be patient :P

Asia is a huge market to tap into. Unfortunately, the EPL teams have a big chunk of it already. I think its because of a combination factors.. one is the English domination of most media outlets and hence people mostly hear about and read about the EPL. In order to follow any game, league or team you have to be following it very closely everyday to be able to cherish the victories and agonize over the losses... many laliga teams have their medium of communication in Spanish which is also a big problem for someone in say Vietnam!(that is why the site is among my favorites!)
Second, as was mentioned earlier on this thread is the time of broadcast. I remember when I was back in India the LaLiga games used to be at 12-4 am. I can only imagine the scenario being worse as you go eastwards.. as in the games will be so early in the morning that you have to be either an owl or a really dedicated fan to consider watching it. Compare this with EPL that broadacts games from 1700 to 2100 India time..The balance of power is just too much in favor of the EPL teams. I know Spain has a culture of having games later in the evening, but if they could put some games after lunchtime (preferably the big ones) then they can steal some limelight (slowly but surely) from the EPL

Yea, I'm sorry too bro. I guess the reason I'm pissed is that watching La liga on Malaysia's AstroSports, you can't help but feel that the producers there are RM biased. Let's look at this one eg. once barca's match start at 1.45am, while RM's match starts at 2.30am. The producers chose to show RM match live and delay barca's game to 5am.

Now where does this relate to our argument? Well it just shows that RM has more older fans following probably since they've been winning Euro cups since the 60's while Barca only since Rijkaard's playing time, if I'm not mistaken, even then they were eclipsed by the likes of AC Milan back then, at least over here. Which is why barca needs to capitalise on its successes now. Bombard TV viewers with Barca news via sports programs, Live interviews etc. like what EPL teams are doing. To do that FCB should not ask for high payments, exposure is much more important. Through that jersey and souvenir sales will surely go thru the roof.

It is tough because Barca matches r generally start at 2am or even 4am on a sunday night over here in Asia. So it is hard to get the exposure, especially when stupid EPL big 4 teams r played around 8:30pm on sat and sun making it easy for ppl to tune in.

buj lepak lah. I think you guys are overreacting by getting upset with our "image" in Asia especially compared to the BPL clubs. Fact is, Clubs such as Man U and Liverpool get more hype due to the game times, English media (as opposed to Spanish, who speaks Spanish in Malaysia?), exclusive TV rights, etc.

BUT..

I'm a firm believer of "if it's good, people will recognize". For years I had to hear crap like "Cesc is better than Xavi/Iniesta"
from Gooners, "CR7's the best player in the world" and crap like that due to improper football advertising. These 'idiots' probably have never watched any games outside the BPL, WC, Euro, and CLs., hence the statements. But 08/09 has shown who truly the best are. Even SAF is seen to be ordinary compared to Hiddink and Pep. Now everone's jumping on the Blaugrana bandwagon. So chill

Mat said...

that's the point AJ... inspite of Xavi/Iniesta being much better than Cesc, its Cesc who is probably a more recognizable figure in the those parts of the world. The fact that Barca had to show it off in the final of the Ch. League for people to recognize the beauty of their game is in itself a small defeat for the la Liga promoters in that part of the world.
