Barcelona not willing to accept Valdes demands

Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain, Barcelona sports vice-president Rafael Yuste and Barcelona director of football Raúl Sanllehí met yesterday with the representatives of Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés (27), his father José Valdés and player's agent Ginés Carvajal.

After a first positive meeting last week on the renewal of the player, whose contract expires in 2010, it was generally believed that a deal could be closed but after 45 minutes in the Camp Nou offices things seem to have gotten only more complicated.

Asked about the meeting, Carvajal told journalists that a deal isn't anywhery close at this moment: "We've made an offer but we're still far away. It's complicated. The atmosphere during the meeting was correct but it won't be easy. I respect the interests of the club but Víctor never asked for a pay rise before. Now the time of the renewal is there and we can ask something.

We understand that what they offer is what they consider to be right, but the duration nor the salary is coming close to what Víctor Valdés is asking. He cannot be compared to Casillas but at this moment he's Barcelona's goalkeeper, he has won three trophies this year and he was again the goalkeeper who received the least goals in the Liga.

We're not disappointed, we're only defending the interests of the player. Víctor wishes to continue but life doesn't end at Barça. And he's not out yet, he has another year on his contract. We're not having concrete offers from other clubs but it's time to make a decision. We're 11 June, so there's time left but we want to have an answer soon so this doesn't turn into a soap opera."

Asked about the renewal negotiations with Valdés, Barcelona president Joan Laporta said in an interview with Catalan radio station RAC 1 that Valdés will have to lower his demands: "I cannot imagine Valdés wearing another shirt. I know how the meeting went and I can only hope the player perfectly knows the offer made by his agent. If he knows about it, I would like him to reconsider it. We have to be patient to see if we can reach an agreement although their demands have surprised us a lot."

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Valdés, whose salary reportedly hasn't been raised since he signed his previous contract in 2005, wants to earn as much as the group of players who are having the highest salaries behind Messi. Although Barcelona raised their first offer, they made clear that it's impossible to meet the demands of the player.

Next week there could be a new meeting but Barcelona hopes that the entourage of the player changes its position in the meantime. It's also possible that Barcelona tries to talk personally with Valdés or that Barcelona president Laporta personally takes charge of the negotiations like he did during the renewal negotiations with Xavi last year.

Madrid sports tabloid As claims that the two parties didn't schedule a new meeting but that talks are planned to go on by phone. Both the club and the player's entourage would think that some time should pass to let things cool off.

I dont think Valdes should be paid as much as Xavi, Iniesta, etc. But. I think Barça have complicated things for themselves in a manner similar to what they have done with Toure.

Recalling some reports earlier in the season, it seems they, verbally or otherwise, promise a revision of the contract at some point but then fail to keep up that promise. This makes the players drive a hard bargain when they sign a new contract. They only seem to revise the contract for players like Messi when they feel they might possibly be stolen by other clubs. The rest like Toure and Valdes are not considered as vital despite the key roles they have played in Barça's success. I am not sure this is the best way to go about things.

Thanks!

lol here is our chance to get rid of valdes,if any team is interested i say sell him,but i doupt it once his agent sees that noone is interested to pay for him he will accept a new contract with what the club is willing to pay and we will be stuck with valdes again

valdes has been good for us, but it would not be a disaster if he leaves. surely, he must know that no club will give him the salary he demands, so he better accept barca's offer or just leave and not get a better contract anywhere else, because he won't, even his agent admits they have no inquiries about him. He should not earn more than Puyol, Xavi and Iniesta, he should earn less than them.

don't let him leave, we're not going to be able to replace him!

Are you crazy? Valdes is the best goalkeeper avaliable for Barca considering he's from La Masia.

And who do you suggest we get instead? Asenjo? Buffon? Cech? Frey?

Disaster, too expensive, too expensive, disaster.

Barca have 3 CL titles and Valdes won 2 of them for us.

Have you guys forgot the saves Valdes made against Drogba and Ronaldo? He kept us in the champions league. Barca should hang on to Valdes, this season he has proved what he can do. I hope they can reach an agreement soon.

Valdes is a very good keeper but HE IS a GOALKEEPER not a field playing super star!!!!

I hope we hang onto him but he really should not be so greedy...If he must go let's make a move for Frey.

Maybe we can do a triple deal with Fiorentina Frey, Melo + vargas for 40 mil or through guddy and hleb in as exchange

ok just thinking out loud that will never happen...but we should sound of Frey as a potential replacement if negotiations with VV fall through...

According to that webpage Stigsby linked to Buffon earn ~400 000 euro / month. I think around 300-350 would be a resonable wage for Valdes.

I agree he shouldn't get as much as Xavi or Messi but come on, he's one of the best goalkeepers we ever had and he should be paid as such.

How may times has Valdes saved us before?
Valdes should make close to what Xavi, Puyol, and Iniesta are making.

The money they are making are little compared to American sports. If a bench player is making $11.5M a season it says something..

Just so everyone knows the numbers.

Barcelona offered 6 million per year (which I still think is too much for him) and Valdes wants 9 million.

That is before taxes. the 6 million that Barcelona offered puts him just below Casillas and on par with Buffon. I think it's more than generous.

16. Iker Casillas Real Madrid 500.000 € 6.000.000 €
35. Gianluigi Buffon Juventus 415.000 € 5.000.000 €

contract talks haven't gone this bad before, why are players begging for higher wages. do they think barca will fold cause they won the treble. valdes will realize that barca have asenjo on standby if he doesn't renew so he is in a bad position if he really wants to stay. barca has never been a club which is to pay high wages to so many members of the squad and if they were to give in to anyone's demands it would set a trend for others to follow, i am backing barca on this one. valdes and eto needs to move on cause asking for higher pay doesn't make you a bad person but asking for outrageous wages is too much.

TengkuAmir10 said...

valdes can go to hell then.buy BUFFON(impossible).or asenjo or guillermo ochoa or petr cech or CASILLAS!!about time vv go.

buj said...

I second Marc4barca comment. Unless they can prove that they can emulate what they did this season then yes, by all means they can ask for more. Prove that they are consistent, not just a fluke season. For now they should accept what Barca can only afford. Do they want to ruin Barca financially??

TengkuAmir10 said...

first, i like to talk about how crazy valdes is .9mil a year for a gk???u r one crazy fella who never went to school u bald guy.2nd,valdes thinks he can equal messi's wage??u r one hell of a sucka who think barca is desperate for u n u think ur say damn good at ur position huh???let me tell u a word."u r OVERRATED" n clearly u r searching for money which u will never get.6mil is d most barca will put up for someone who's not even tall,n not even good n messes up in big games.(u were lucky in the champions league).in the final,it was all about luck since our defense was so good that ronaldo didnt even have a CLEAR chance to finish U.n stop talking about high wage demands since u r not the best in ur own position.high wages r only for players who have won ballon d or or who will win ballon d or or who is chased by a thousand clubs .

n it looks to me dat not even STOKE city wants to buy u.i think asenjo will be better than u n joe hart is better than u.kasper schmeichel is better than u and they earn nothing n dey have never even think about demanding higher wages than buffon. barca is not so stupid to even give u a smell of a 9mil a year paycheck.i think even 6 mil is generous for a guy like u.

Unknown said...

we don't really need him:) thanks for a good year and bye bye get asenjo instead he's way better than him even now at age of 19 now we will have a casillas in our team finally!!!

sashi said...

Tengkuamir : do u have any conscience wit wat u are speaking? can u read properly? i doubt both.

1. VV DOESN'T WANNA BE PAID AS MUCH AS MESSI. HE WANTS TO BE PAID IN THE BRACKET BELOW MESSI and i feel he deserves it. this situation is partly because of the Barca board as they told VV tat contract talks will be taken care at the end of season after assessing his performance and VV did put up the best performance in the 2nd half. now he's got his confidence back n so he asks for a little more.

2. he craps in big games? am sorry but was tat wat u said???? are u insane? blind? El Classico - 1 on 1 with Drenthe, 1 on 1 with tat retard youth player of theirs, CL semis - 1 on 1 wit Drogba(twice), made 2 saves agnst Chelsea when they counter attacked(everyone in the world thought tat it was a goal n VV saved it), CL final - Ronaldo free kick(dont tell me he paried it but tats a gr8 thing to do to tat a-hole's free kick as it lands in an awkward position to collect nor to stop it), 1 on 1 agnst Ronaldo. these are just the few high profile saves from this year alone.

if u blame VV for failing to save a 50-50 chance, then blame Messi for missing a goal from 6 yards, blame Eto for the countless misses towards th end of the season. blame Alves for missing so many free kicks he totally screwed. blame Puyol for the mistakes in positioning. i can say some more too. just bcoz VV's 1 small mistake costs us a goal, tat doesn't mean tat u expect him to be 200% alert all through the year. noone can. i just hate it when ppl circle VV for 1 or 2 mistakes in 15 or 20 matches. we have to accept tat

Casillas has made his share of blunders for the year and so does Cech. please dont ever tell me tat Cech is better than VV. they are equally gud. VV is not gud in the air, i accept. Cech is too scared to go for the ball in the air in a crowded box after his head injury(hope u remember how he got injured). he's scared shitless to go for open balls in the air in the box.

and coming to the final part, does anyone seriously believe Asenjo can fill VV's shoes? u must be crazy. the kid's just 19. let him be somewhere for 2-3 years n then we can think about him. he'll succumb to the pressure from all our fans. honestly...

give VV the credit. he literally won 2 CL finals for us. had Ronaldo scored the free kick, it would've been an onslaught. had Henry scored sometime in Paris, they would got 2 goal lead n it would've been uncatchable. just give VV the credit he deserves.

peter said...

No pun, but i would trade him for Asenjo any day!

sashi said...

@amir : u seriously wouldn't want a kid guarding the posts of Barca.

TengkuAmir10 said...

well,if it was i who decided i think he is overrated but nevermind n i dont care how much he wants to get paid as long as its not above 6million.i mean look at buffon n casillas dude n he still wanted more than both of them.a kid or not, aslong as his promising then its ok.nn yes i do remember why cech was injured.head to post then BANG!

TengkuAmir10 said...

n asenjo will be more expensive if we get later.trust me.

jordy said...

9m is just crazy. I think victor is a good keeper and we would have problems to replace him. but he's is too gready. 4,5 million a years seems wright to me. why get more than wright.. I would consider asenjo for 5,5 million. and a better second goalkeeper
This is really stupid.where the hell are people going to pay victor more than 5m?????? even man utd won't pay him this much. city does but does he want to play middle league football

sashi said...

he's been with the team for almost 9 years now and why does he not deserve to be in the same bracket as Xavi or Puyol? he's done his hard work. we dont have any other alternative. as simple as tat.

wat if Asenjo becomes the biggest flop in Barca history? just be happy with wat we have when the one we have is this gud...

i would only accept if anyone says VV is not as gud as Casillas or Buffon. noone else. NOONE ELSE. again, he's the best we can get.

peter said...

"u seriously wouldn't want a kid guarding the posts of Barca."

Why not? We've had "kids" scoring our goals the last couple of seasons (messi/bojan).

Anonymous said...

He's asking for how much??? is that because he has to pay for child support in August when his son will be born lol (only kidding), on a serious note he is a good GK but really he has to be kidding he's not even on the Spain's NT...i think he really needs to wake up and smell the coffee...and to be grateful for what he has got at Barca plus what he has achieved this season

sashi said...

Peter : scoring goals is different. tats wat i've been telling for a long time. when forwards scores goals, 1 miss isn't tat much of an issue. but for a goalie, 1 miss is a goal down. imagine for VV to come back from the pressure after Espanyol game n put in a string of saves in all the matches after tat is 1 heck of a job.

how many goals have Bojan or Eto missed? Eto would've gone past 50 atleast had he converted many easy chances + the ones he hit the bar.

for heaven's sake, pls dont compare a forward n a goalie. we can get Asenjo to be as a backup n make him develop in the years to come. replacing VV with him would surely be a disaster.

sooo many 1 on 1s. he's the best in 1 on 1 surely. best shot stopper.

SJP said...

to be fair this is probably just his agent being a twat. he never should have gone with this guy. vales has been probably the 2nd best GK barca have ever had so yes he deserves a pay rise but to expect the same as INTERNATIONAL stars is too much. i know he has to contend with casillas but xavi, iniesta etc are international star he is not, plus the fact that GK don't get paid same as outfield players casillas being the exception because RM know they would be a mid table team if it wasn't for him.

talk to the player, never mind the agent, if he is still being greedy then let him go, see if anyone else pays that and get asenjo. would hate to see him leave but...

could u please do a cmpilation of Valdes' saves this season???????? please man...
he doesn't seem to be appreciated for wat he has done n i feel toooo bad about it.

The talk is barca would consider a move for liverpool's reina, the villareal gk or the athletic gk if valdes leaves. Sashi saves are more difficult to come bye but i'll see what i can do.

thanx B4L. appreciate it!

As much as I like Valdes as a shot stopper, his kicking and general distribution is weak. If he worked harder on that he would deserve an increase in wages.

buj said...

While I can understand haggling for the best price is part and parcel of any nego but VV needs to be careful. E9m is 50% more than highest paid GK. I can understand if he wants E5.5m to E6m. How much is he making now anyway?

Nzuu said...

I like Victor Valdes and I believe he seriously deserves a pay rise..... but not to 9million. I don't care. Xavi and INiesta are still at 5 to 6 million... Barca offer him 6 mill and he wants 50% more? he can go and get lost if he is acting that babyish. This team is not Man City or Real Madrid

Manolo said...

If we buy Asenjo and sell him in the year 2016 that will be the best buy in footbal history!

He will surley be worth around 30-65 m euro at that time.

valdes is the best there is for barca. you have to get that. not with high wages, but with cool talks
valdes forever one of us!!!!!!!!

LeónDragón...Tha Infamous said...

valdes and zamora, speaking for theirselves. to say it was not him, just the defence is a lost of reality

buj said...

Yes, I agree VV is good for Barca only bcoz STABILTY and CONTINUITY will trump RM's stitch-up squad of galaticos. They may have the upper-hand early in the season only bcoz other teams have yet to see how Pelligrini plays his galaticos. Once known they'll be no more than any other teams. What Barca have over other teams this season is stability in the team due to no-nonsense PEP and ofcourse our un-matched passing game. Doubt other teams will have an answer to that game-plan unless ofcourse they park the bus in front of goal, which is why PEP is keen on an Ibra-type player.
