Three possible alternatives for the centre-back

While the negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk defender and Ukrainian international Dmytro Chygrnskiy (22) at a standstill (read more here), and Barcelona still wanting to sign a left central defender to pair with Piqué for the long term, Catalan sports paper Sport claimsthat Barcelona has profiled three possible alternatives:

Vincent Kompany
(23, 193m) - Manchester City defender and Belgian international

First choice. A versatile player previously targeted by Barcelona while Frank Rijkaard was still in charge, Thuram would have arrived instead. Belgian international, can play multiple positions. Shares defensive midfielder duties on the national team with another Barcelona target, Vertognen. Has height, versatility, youth and experience. Would have fit all the profiles sought by Barcelona.

Miranda (24, 1.85m) - Sao Paulo defender and Brazilian international
A speedy player who forms part of a central duo with veteran Andre Dias at Sao Paulo. Right-footed but plays on the left side in central defense. The fourth choice central defender on the Brazilian national team at the 2009 Confederations Cup behind Lucio, Juan and Luisao. Already had a failed European experience with French club Sochaux.

Jonny Evans (21, 1.88m) - Manchester United defender and Northern Irish international
A player with excellent mental attributes, tactical and calm on the ball. Manchester United's third choice central defender behind undisputed Vidic and Ferdinand. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson would have authorized the departure of current Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué in part because of the quality of Evans. Contract ends in 2011. Would cost between 12 and 15 million euro.

We should forget about Evans. Why did we buy Henrique by the way? The search for central defenders have already cost us a lot of money

we must have at least 4 central defenders with at least 1 of them can play at full back to reduce pressure on alves :
Henrique - Puyol - Marquez - Pique (Abidal Too)
Puyol and Henrique can play at full back (left and right)
so in general we dont need anymore Central defenders.
maybe one more because of the injury prone marquez... and because of the 6 championships we have to compete in ... and because of the 2010 world cup qualifiers and players having to represent their national sides...
so we still need one more defender =)

i would't buy any of the above 3 CB's. If we can get chygrynskyiy then great since hes fantastic and since we can play marquez at DM during the AFN, but if we cannot get chygrynskyiy i would rather play muniesa and fontas than buying the above 3...

kompany is good
evans played at manu like pique know wht it needs ot play at big club
but it will be really tough ....
fergie would not like to loose another player of similar characteristics rather they would not want to see another pique situation .p

man city definielty wont since they dont requie money and he is there first team

but they have bought defensive cover with toure and dejong , ireland , and bary there in cm so they might sell sme one!!!

It's strange we bought Henrique and even stranger we bought Caceres. And I can tell you this - buying one of these guys would be another mistake. We would still not have somebody to play alongside Pique and we just throw away our money.

I have never seen barça in a such panic on the transfers market

Barça isn't in panic, the papers are: thye don't have anything to write about... ;)

Kompany would be best option out of those three, but I would prefer pairing up Muniesa and Pique for the long term. And guys, how is Valiente doing? Should we buy him back next year?

Indeed, Pique-Muniesa seems just perfect. Kompany seems to relaxed, not really a good spirit.

kompany wiould be perfect and man cityy would be willing to sell not becuase they need money, but becuase they have an over abundance of defenders.

Evans? Have you seen him playing? He is a total disaster! "Miranda already had a failed European experience with French club Sochaux" -Yeah, sounds good, lets pay 18-20 million for him, he can be our next mega money flop! LOL.
Barca should have sold Hleb because now we dont have enough funds left in the transfer market. If Barca signs only one player in August, it should be a midfielder. Seems that Barca chiefs are playing waiting game in Cesc case, they just hope that nobody buys him this summer, then Rosell could buy him next year as part of his presidential campaign, the current board may not have guts to buy Cesc back for a top price

Am i the only one who feels that we'd rather buy a cheaper, experienced defender (27-28yrs, considering we already have Pique and Muniesa for the long term.

Out of the young defenders that we've bought,Caceras disappointed last season and Henrique seems to be losing ground to Muniesa.Do we really need another gamble with a promising youngster who'd probably cost twice as much a more experienced one?

Company would be perfect?

I always wonder why people talk about players they have never seen play.

Company is no where close to being Barca material...he used to be the biggest talent in his country but he is/was always hurt. Hamburg was happy to get rid of him and he will never be anything more than a talent.

None of these guys can get the job done at Barca. And I think this article is garbage. Muniesa will be the longterm central defender, period.
