Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona right wing attacker and Argentinian international Lionel Messi (22) will be offered a new pay rise this summer (read more here).
After the transfer of Ibrahimovic, Barcelona wants Messi to stay the best paid player of the squad and will start talking with the player's father and agent Jorge Messi next month. The Argentinian would at this moment be earning 8 million euro gross a year plus a maximum of 2,4 million euro in incentives.
Madrid sports tabloid As claims that this will be the fifth contract renewal for Messi since he was promoted to the first team.
Messi, who is reported to earn now 8,4 million euro plus incentives (depending -among other things- on 60 per cent of the games played, qualification for the Champions League and trophies won) that last season added another 30 per cent to his wages, would now be offered a year salary of 11 million euro plus another possible 30 per cent of that amount in incentives. Messi would also exclusively keep his image rights and the buyout clause would be raised from 150 to 250 million euro°.

not that i don't agree with the renewal , i really do but isn't 11 mil + 30% incevtives + 100% image rights too much ?
I thought he had a pretty spiffy deal already. Last I saw he was the second best paid player in the world after Zlatan.
And Zlatans salary has gone down in the mean time now hes moved to barca
Of course it's too much, but you can't do much about it, I think. You need to join the rat race otherwise the players leave.
By the way, Cristiano would more or less have the same salary buy only half of his image rights.
Zlatan's salary went from 12 to 9 millions gross but because of the lower taxes in Spain, he'll actually earn MORE at Barça...
I think it is. We are extremely generous with our wages, which I think is the reason why we always get so little money for the players we sell, as the wage demands of the player we sell is so high when coming from Barcelona. I really don't like that we give them 100% of the image rights. We seem to be really afraid of losing our players for some reason, so we give over-the-top compensation.
One thing I thought about; I think the taxes in Spain are 24% for foreigners in the first 5 years, but then the taxes are much higher after 5 years? Maybe this affect Messi, since he has dual nationality and has played 5 years for the senior team?
I wonder whatever happened to the speculation linking us to the winger/forward Ibrahim Afellay... We sure need to sign a winger for we have just 4 in Henry, Ibracadabra, Messi & Bojan, to rotate on our front line which requires a minimum 3 and it doesn't seem safe at all.
I still can't get over the fact that Keirrison is sent on loan already. Should have waited at least until the pre-season is finished. Even if he stayed there's always the Jan transfer window if he really needed to be sent on loan. Pedro ain't yet ready for the famous Barca front line even as a back-up guys :( Pep couldn't trust even Bojan much last time who had been around for like 2 years, I don't think he would dare use Pedro much this season.
I so wanted Chyhrynskiy, that guy being very promising but CB is NOT our priority right now. We definitely need a CM who is pretty decent at going forward to cover for Xavi & Iniesta and a decent scoring winger in order to provide much needed rest for our front line next season. We are seriously not out of resources for defense and CDM positions. God forbid but even a minor knock would prove too much to recover quick from for aging Henry :(

We are strikers who defend, we are defenders who attack, we are speed, we are strength, we are effort, we are precision, we are as one... We are Barça
Anon: You are forgetting we have 3 more wingers in Gai Assulin, Jeffren and Pedro. If we want these guys to develop we cant afford to overpopulate the winger position, these young talents need a chance to play.
We had Ronnie, Henry, Eto'o, Messi & Giovani Dos Santos... But yeah Bojan HAD improved :) He played almost the same amount of time last season as that in the season b4 even though we had 2 of the above list sold. But since Pep would rotate more this time I don't think buying a winger, who's ready for first team, wouldn't be a hindrance for their growth. Moreover Gai is still only 18 :)

Lionel Messi deserves every penny of this contract. A great player and a great professional. I hope he keeps winning trophies with Barca.
