Better contract for Messi

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona has offered Barcelona right wing attacker and Argentinian international Lionel Messi (21) a better contract (read more here).

Messi will now receive a year salary of 8 million euro, with another possible 4,5 million euro in incentives: the player receives one million euro extra if Barcelona qualifies for the Champions League, one million euro extra if he plays at least 60 per cent of the official matches and 2,5 million euro extra depending on the trophies won.

This pay rise doesn't mean that the duration or the buyout clause are changed: Messi's contract with Barcelona expires in 2014 and the buyout clause is 150 million euro°. Despite several tempting offers from other European top clubs, Messi has always shown the will to stay in Barcelona.

Barcelona economic vice president Ferran Soriano confirmed the contract renewal in an interview with Catalan radio station RAC 1: "We have adapted the contract to his performances."

Not to say that Messi is undeserving of a raise, but that's a lot of money splashed on a player with legitimate injury concerns. If (being the operative word) he can stay healthy and upright for an entire season then he is worth every penny. Hopefully the training staff will keep an eagle eye on him and make sure he only comes away with a few minor scrapes and bruises. As we witnessed last year, losing him for any great length of time can have catastrophic consequences. He is our bread and butter.

I like that barcelona renewed his contract but barcelona should give him a permanant stay contract so he would be wearing a blaograna shirt for all of his carrear but i like the renwewl.

I fully agree with the second comment. And he has to work on improving. Even the Argentina coach believes (as do I) that Messi has to be better withOUT the ball. Hopefully they will work on that.

His defiance of the club over the Olympics is distressing, as well.

Here's another way to think about it: Messi has been pretty consistent. Last season, 16 goals in 40 total appearances. The season previous, 17 goals in 36 total appearances. He's also lost significant portions of the last three seasons to injuries. He had 26 assists last season, which is very impressive. A complete player.

But I ask you: If he weren't already ours, could anyone here countenance spending that kind of money on a player with those statistics?

I'm all for rewarding performance. I just wish the numbers were more realistic.

I also like that Guardiola is setting up a system in which he won't be our bread and butter.
