[2008] Pre-agreement on Palacio put on hold

this post was published exactly one year ago:

Argentinian newspaper La Nación claims that all parties involved signed a pre-agreement on the transfer of Boca Juniors forward and Argentinian international Rodrigo Palacio (26) to Barcelona on the 31st of January of this year.

With the contacts already having started in December 2006 and after negotiations with a lot of ups and downs, Barcelona representative Joan Patsy, Palacio's agent Roberto Depietri, Palacio's father José Ramón Palacio and Boca president Pedro Pompilio signed the official pre-agreement at the end of January, with Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain following the final negotiations by phone.

Palacio would sign a three-year contract with an option for an extra year. Barcelona will pay Boca Juniors a transfer fee of 11 million euro° with another possible 4 million euro° variables, three of which were depending on the participation of Boca in the Trofeo Joan Gamper pre-season match in August.

The deal furter explained the incentives Palacio would receive for his performances. It was also stated that Barcelona wouldn't allow the striker to join the Argentinian national team at other dates than the official FIFA dates and that he would be one of the Nike stars during the first three years of his contract.

Because of the institutional crisis Barcelona is going through and the need to bring in a more high profiled striker, the deal would nevertheless have been put on hold. The pre-agreement would be the reason why a 16 million euro offer for Palacio by Italian club Lazio Roma was rejected last month.

Hi Pep!

Whats ur opinion about this? We will really sign this player or what?

is he good player, I havent heard about him before?

is he still an option? dont know much about him (other than really dodgy pony tail!), would he fill the big no 9 position instead of ade/drogba etc?

He's really a good finisher and very dangerous in the penalty box.. I've watched him playing with Boca and Argentina so many times.. I think he's not Pep's #1 choice 'cause of his physical size. If Eto'o leaves (I think he will) or Henry, I prefer him if we can't get Drogba. IMO Pep makes a right decision to replace our striker. We need a striker who can scores with just one or two touch.

ya he was among the targets earlier ....he sure looks good ....has pace ,accuracy ,control....he would be a good ..but not sure 4 the cf post & and looking at the req of cf which pep is looking 4..!

I don't think he fits the description for the striker that Pep wants. He is just 1.75m and I don't think he have what it takes to play as a lone striker. However he is a argentinian national and have so far scored 49 goals in 111 apperances for Boca so he would definatly be a boost to the squad. But he is more of the Bojan/Henry/Eto'o type.

pep why dont barca go for Adriano he is everything barca need powerful, tall, and fast

I saw him playing. He is good but can't play at Barcelona's level. He is 26 and he didn't transfer to Europe yet.He will be BARCA's worst signing.Don't sign him.
Etoo and Henry didn't play yesterday. So, I guess someone could be leaving and I think that Berbatov is coming to Barcelona.

I am really disapointed in Henry but Eto'o amazed me in some friendlies but i think if we sell henry and eto'o i think we should get him he should be a good backup striker or winger but i prefer we sign Aguero as backup if that one isnt possible Trezeguet and buy a new first team striker like Drogba,Adebayor,Tevez,Benzema, the last one i prefer, who i really dont want to see playing in the barca shirt is Berbatov he is not the player barca is looking for

and as new left winger i prefer we should sign David Silva, Diego Buonanotte or Thiago Neves
why Buonanotte? give him a year to fit in and let Hleb or maybe Keita play on the left wing this year then next year you will see what a unbelievable great player he is
i think it would the same for Neves but Buonanotte is a few years younger

So far, I'm disappointed with both Henry and Eto'o, I would say I'm more impressed with Bojan. As we're unlikely gonna get Aguero, Benzema or Adebayour, we should look to the other options available because what we really need is experienced striker who can score if Henry and Eto'o leave because we can't take the risk depending on young striker for the whole season and for important games. For the game against Fiorentina, Iniesta was not good enough on the left wing, Jeffren too, though he scored a goal. Two more good signings and we'll be unstopable. I don't have someone in mind for the left wing position, maybe Ashavin will do? Pep knows better.

Ya put Bojan as starting because he's the best! Palacio is pretty good but id prefer drogba or eto'o....and the guy who said get Adriano, I wish they would but it doesnt seem like they are interested...he'd make me happy if we signed him

Forgot to say.. Our defend was solid, for the new signings, Alves, Pique and Caceres did really well. Xavi showed that he should play every game, Hleb made a good impact and Gudjohnsen was poor. As always, Messi and Bojan never let me down. Visca el Barça.

Guys, Palacio is not a typical striker. He is more as a second striker or a winger. So he would be great addition on the left wing where we need a new player. He is in the best age, is fast as hell and scores couple of goals.

I would have to disagree with most of you. I would welcome this move. As the comment above mentioned, Palacio is more of a secondary striker/winger, and there's no doubt that he can score goals in bunches and LOOKS to score, which is a lot more than we can say about Silva. Also consider that we could get this chap for possibly half the asking price of Silva as well.

I think with the addition of Hleb we have more than enough "facilitators" on the club, what we need are players who can find the back of the net. And Palacio for one is not gun shy.

Palacio may not be considered a premier "world class" player, but if players like Messi, Hleb, Xavi, etc. provide him with enough quality touches upfront and he's allowed to operate in space off the wing, he could score goals in bunches. And for around 15mil it's a relatively low risk investment.
