Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain has spoken this week to Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez to confirm that Barcelona is interested in Liverpool defensive midfielder and Argentine international Javier Mascherano (25).
Liverpool wouldn't be happy with the fact that Barcelona has first contacted the player (read more here) and isn't anyway willing to let Mascherano go. A formal offer by Real Madrid would already have been rejected.
Barcelona reportedly nevertheless thinks that Mascherano is a key player for the new project and will try everything to sign the midfielder, who wants to join Barcelona and whose agent Walter Tamer has therefore no plans to meet with Madrid officials.
Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona is preparing a first bid of 20 million euro° for Mascherano. Benítez would have given Begiristain the permission to make an offer although he also said that doesn't want to let the Argentinian leave this summer.
British tabloid The Daily Mirror claims that Barcelona is ready to make a bid of 30 million euro° for Mascherano. Sources close to the player would have said that he would be interested in speaking to Barcelona, that might be willing to more than triple his current salary. Liverpool is expected to reject every offer, although the club may have to hand Mascherano improved terms to keep him happy.

20 million euro =
28 million us dollar
17 million british pound
30 million euro =
41 million us dollar
25 million british pound
here we go again.... Any news on zhirkov Pep? I love how all the British tabloids claimed he was signing for Chelsea yesterday. Even saw a few guys here quoting that bs, but don't worry I wont mention your name
So, the guys goes on £90K/week.. wow.. "he is not loyal to Barca"... He doesnt love us at all. Why not ask for double his cureent £30K/week?
Indeed the price tag for a back up player is simply to much.
His technical skills are really bad. besides we already have to much small players. our DM must be a good header like yaya or sergi busquets. I think if we have xavi, iniesta, keita, toure, sergi busquets sanchez and promote vazquez we should be well covered. In the world cup games we could promote thiago as well as the copa del rey. If we would get an extra midfielder I would like a player profile keita; box to box with good technique.
we would better bid those 20 - 30 million for robben! He still is 24 years old and a true winger
robben/henry Bojan/villa/henry messi/pedro is a good and solid attack
Great player but we're already have so many options at that position (even with the Africa Cup), that we can spend our (very) limited budget morewisely, I think.
I agree with jordy that one of our main objectives should be a good left winger (problem with Robben are that he's terribly injury-prone and that Madrid hardly will let him join us...) to balance the team and to give Henry some rest.
ya a sub for xavi
or a left winger would be a good purchase for that money
I honestly don't think that they will let him go for 20 million, that's really not a serious bid. He's a key player, he has an ongoing contact, so 30 million will be the lowest bid they might consider.
It wouldn't surprise me that his agents are just using our supposed interest to get a pay rise.
robben is injury prone indeed. but that's okay because henry and in the future gai and pedro need to play to!
Besides I think the medical staff in barça is far better than the madrid staff.
Ok, but that leaves the second problem... ;)
can anyone just tell me why Forlan is our back up option rather than Luis Fabiano??? he's way younger than Forlan and a great goal scorer. and a less buyout clause too.
no harm in trying fcbee
Because forlan has also a very high work rate. he pressures as much as eto'o.. Fabiano scored some goals in the confederations cup but i'm not crazy about him. Also he seems to be a difficult guy, like samuel is. Don't think the board is into that
I think we must have more players then we had last year. why don't we bring crosas back. he is great, look at busquets, why wouldn't crosas play like that. and we have sub for mid. and for lw and cf i think aguero would be best option. guy is awesome, young, very strong, and he can play on both positions.
I thaught lucho gonzalez would've been good as well (only 17 mil)
Guys say what you want, but, beside some positons that need to be strenghtened, we need a versatile DM/CM. We will lose yaya and keita for a month, and that might prove decisive for la liga title, ofcourse if we don't buy good midifilder. One more thing, what if somenoe from our midifield gets injured??? Please, don't tell me we have thiago, kid is great, but we need somene with experience. Look at arsenal, they have great young talents, but they suck badly and will continue in that way until they sign proper player with experience
next week RM will sign masch ...
they need a better quality DM than gago
Y not Hamsik, dudes? He is exelent
Gago is back up DM. They have Diarra and they're targetting Xabi Alonso.
Lucho cost 18 + 6, 24 million total. He's not cheap at all. Diego cost 25 as well.
Indeed, they want Lassana Diarra and Xabi Alonso in midfield apparently.
hey,why dont barca just freakin sign aguero??175cm,powerful n a CF.why??the price is 38.5million n wage demands is 100,ooo per week??why??who cares about respect.we r desperate to improve more!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh my...
we don't need this guy! i trust in busquets to fill in for THE YAYA while he's away.
and like someone else said...let's please bring back crosas.
i honestly believe henry has one more solid season left in him and convert bojan to a winger.
our MAIN priority is LB...in my opinion.
