[2008] Portsmouth and Newcastle in race for Gudjohnsen

British tabloid The Sun claims that English premier League clubs Portsmouth and Newcastle are interested to sign Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29).

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has made Gudjohnsen, together with Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, his top transfer target for the coming transfer window, something that is also claimed by British tabloid The Daily Mirror. But Newcastle head coach Kevin Keegan has apparently done the same (read more here).

Barcelona is said to be willing to accept an offer of 6 million euro° for Gudjohnsen, who arrived in Barcelona from Chelsea in the summer of 2006 and whose contract expires in 2010.

I think he's worth a little more, they like him in the Premier League and i'm sure he'll do nice things there.

The transfer fee shouldn't be any problem. But the sticking point could be Eidur's wage demands. So he has to decide wether a better salary is more attractive than more playing time somewhere else.

In the long run he can also get financially better by leaving in my opinion: now he can still sign a good four-year contract (earning less the first two years but more in the next second years), that won't be possible anymore if he stay on the bench until he is 31 years old. But then there's the weather...
