Guardiola asks for one or two more transfers

Speaking at a press conference, Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola has repeated that he hopes the club will sign more players before the end of the summer transfer window:

"We miss one or two more pieces. I know that, Txiki knows that, the president, everybody, we don't disagree on that. If it's possible, a new player will come. If it's not to be, then it's not to be. I'm not worried.

It's difficult. There are negotiations, asking prices... It depends on the market and on what the club is looking at. I don't know how much money we have to spend. We're looking at names and we discuss them and we'll keep on doing that until the market closes. There are a lot of players who want to join Barcelona, but it also depends on the price, the needs of the club and other things. Cesc? He won't come to Barcelona. Eboué? Probably not.

We maybe could need something at the back, in midfield and on the wing, although if we sign players, they have to be very good. Last year we had a great squad and it's the same this year. If we don't sign new players, I'll use the youth players. It's good we demand a lot of them, but they can relax because they know that their team-mates and the staff are there to protect them. Whatever happens, we won't be looking for excuses."

How can he not know how mch money there is to spend?! Maybe someone should tell him so he stops asking fro Cesc ànd Chygrynskiy ànd Ribery...

If he really only wants top quality players, I no longer exclude we might end up with no one.

Pep, you're a wise man, and you have all of my trust. I'm sure you've got Txiki working on some surprise transfers, else you wouldn't be so relaxed! Just make sure you repeat the success of last year!

allot of the fans here have alot of trust to the youth players.if we have a trophyless season mainly for injuries then i bet they are the same that will come out and say that txiki was wrong for not spending more.

pep himself says it the team needs 2-3 more players and txiki and laporta know it too according to pep, what do they think that we can sign world class players for less than 20mil?or that we can sign cesc for 30mil at the end of transfer season?at the start of transfer season the board asked for patience,it took them 2 months to release eto and find a sub and now we have only completed 2 transfers and 6 players left.sorry but our youth here sounds like an excuse to me for our bad negotiations, heck affelay is better than dos santos, kompany better than fontas and mata/many other wingers better than jeffren.

no more excuses if the team fails this season it will be because of the board and the coach.sorry but pep has to take the blame too if this happens,it will be easier for the board cause it is its last year, but for pep it will be harder if we fail this season.pep should had put more pressure to the board about transfers,he asked for a bigger squad and only got youth players and maxwell/sylvinho ibra/eto which dont help for a larger squad.

call me a pessimist but better be safe than sorry,we have the best 11 in the world but thats it, after those its chaos, pep should give the players a bath with holy water in order to dont have injuries cause if some of our key players are out then its game over, forget 1 place we will be battling for 5-6th position with jeffren and pedro on the wings .....

get over you cheapness and move your a$$ txiki,2 more weeks for 2+ signings.

One defender (RB probably), one midfielder (DM preferably), one forward (a player that can play on both wings).

Jeffren is going to leave, maybe permanently.

I dont mind Jonas as a LW backup. I saw him listed as a RB but i think he played LW for Newcastle and Argentina. Scored a nice goal against france. Quality player perhaps he is the one we can get for cheap?

wow...lot of negativity for a team that just won the treble and bilboa while missing its top 3 attacking players.

Marc4barca said...

your right skanjos... many here put alot of pressure on the youths and will probably blast them if they fail, we shouldn't rush them we should bring in some quality players. i think affelay or hernanes will be good buys.. don't sell guddy even though he is useless he is better than nothing. sign a left winger as i am not to sure how henry will fare this season and a cb or rb. spending this season could lead no spending next season and it would be great to spend this season when the season is cramped up. i think the main reason why we aren't doing well in this tranfer season is the fact that pep and laporta maybe aren't seeing eye to eye in this transfer season, just an opinion. muniesa fontas dos santos will all be great but not if we rush them into the premiere division and they dont meet expectations and drop in confidence. 1 year or 2 more in the b team and they are ready.

barca4life said...

Its not the first team that causes the negativity rory. If you could guarantee us that our starting eleven would play 90% of games we'd be thrilled and would not really need that many subs. But since we are unsure of how the injury and fatigue situation will go it worries fans that our bench looks thin.

I dont like to look at Madrid, but they have players like Sneijder, Higuain and Robben on the bench, players that would be starters in pretty much any team in the world.

Anonymous said...

Having such talent for bench-warmers is not at all good for team. But at the same time having only your youth squad who have like just 1 match experience in the league is too risky, period.
Anyways, Sneijder is on the verge of signing for Inter

KluivertsBoots said...

Our mistake was not acting quickly enough and allowing Real to break the market before we could get started.

Laporta and Txiki had to know that was going to happen, but decided to sit back anyway. That is surprising because we obviously needed some refreshing and reinforcing of the squad.

Our transfer activity has been very suspect for a few years now. Very few of the players we've brought in recently have worked out. This is one area that will certainly improve with the change in presidency next year. Rosell is extremely sharp when it comes to transfers.

fcbee said...

We simply don't have the money, it's as simple as that. We basically spent almost our whole budget on Ibrahimovic and then bought a player we don't really need (now) like Keirrison.

Those who were the happiest when Zlatan came are now the first to complain. It's not like we have endless resources... Accept the fact that we'll ahve to do it with a very small sqaud this season.

Sneijder's agent said that Sneijder wants to stay and fight for his place in Madrid. Besides, they also have players like Negredo, M.Diarra, Van Nistelrooy, Raul, maybe also Van der Vaart. I think we have to admit that they have more depth than we do. On the bench, only Maxwell, Keita and Marquez for us are proven at the highest level. The rest are players like Bojan, Pedro, Muniesa, Busquets etc. Depending too much on the youth is risky and might even damage the youth players.

Anonymous said...

@ fcbee
The officials themselves claimed we have like 60-80 million for transfer budget. It's not like we demanded to overpay for Ibra. We were ready to pay 45-50 for Villa as well & Eto'o was not willing to go to any other club, he was pin-pointed to Italian clubs. Why do you want to get back all that debate that's been done and dusted again!?!

Anonymous said...

Playing the same players, week in, week out, is bound to cause fatigue in our players and make them more vulnerable to injuries. Small squad = more injuries. And this risk is increased further by the very high number of matches we will play.

Save thsi article, especially the part when Pep says "Whatever happens, we won't be looking for excuses". If we don't sign any backup for Xavi and Iniesta (or Yaya and Busquets) and (knock on wood) Iniesta or Xavi gets injured and we loose the league and/or CL Pep will blaim the board for not having any backups. I don't know what's going on, but from the outside it sure looks strange we don't have a bigger squad. We don't have enough defenders and we are dangerously low on midfielders and forwards.

It's official that we are not gonna pay all the transfer fee for Ibra this summer itself... It's been divided over a period of 3 years. Stop posting igrnorantly

Should've, Could've, Would've...
Pep is a realistic man.
You can say he didn't do that, and didn't do this, but all he says here is the straight forward truth: Signing high quality players is not easy, and if we make mistakes, we will admit them. But he will NEVER admit them before the end of the season! Let us play, then criticize.
Pep knows no excuses are allowed, and he isn't giving himself a break too, if we will perform bad, whether because of 'Bad' technical decisions, he will be the first one to admit it!

Where were Sneijeder, Raul, Van der Vaart last year? Didn't see them. On the bench or on the pitch, doesn't matter, thye won't make the difference. Madrid just has to hope the new players click. And too many overpaid would-be superstars on the bench isn't good for the atmosphere either.

Dembele (13m-15m)
Cesar (10m)
+some player from Argentina where the clubs are all in major financial trouble so we can get players there very cheap.

We don't need to spend more than around 30m euros.

Didn't see any "official" announcement about that. Better look up the word official otherwise people could thinking you're posting ignorantly here...

And even if it was 60-80 (first it was 30-35), it still doesn't allow us to buy a lot, right? 46 Zlatan, 14 Keirrison, 5 Maxwell. That's 15 left (if we go for 80, minus 5 if we go for 60) for one or two transfers. Now you tell me which quality player to get for that money?

trez: You might not see them, but you have to admit that players like Sneijder, Higuain, Robben are better than Pedro, Busquets, Bojan?

Cesar (8m) + Jeffren on loan
Arda (15-18m)
Kompany (10-12m)

It is 33-35 m

Why are all of you always moaning about the youth players?? I mean Pep brought us 3 trophies last year, and not only that, but an out-of-this-world football. If he says that he is relaxed and that he believes in his players, than I do also. Just wanna say, dont act like managers, give a little trust to the man who made history, so you wont be surprised when he does the same as last season, or even better. :D

Most transfers are paid over several years, this summer we are probably paying Arsenal some money for Henry, and Hleb, Villarreal some money for Caceres etc. It doesn't mean we have any more money to spend.

Anonymous said...

Some official related to our finances, don't remember the name, had actually told in an interview that we are not gonna pay the entire sum in a bulk and that it would be paid in installments in 3 years. At the time he also said, if I remember right, the club is in a financial position where we are ready to buy any super star that pep desires to have in his squad

fcbee said...

That's not "official". That's talk for the fans.

trez said...

It's not about the players, it's about the team. Don't be obsessed with individuals who have class but can't perform as a team.

Squad depth is about having quality players on the bench, which gives options to the manager, for tactical reasons either as subs or starters and because of injuries and suspensions.

Anonymous said...

I agree on Dembele he is going to be a big star, but has he even been linked to us??

Anonymous said...

I know we have just bought Keirrison and we have Bojan and Rochina that will probably be stars in the future, but I have always thought this and I still think that Zarate will he best Striker in the world soon and I think he is better than ÀGUERO and Higuain. I know we dont need another Striker but Zarate is certain to be the next big Striker in a while. He can score from long distance, has a great free kick, can dribble like Iniesta, makes Eto like runs and can finish like Henry or Messi.

Just get kompany and afellay.
those two players just covered th rb,cb,dm,am,and lf positions. then promote muniesa, fontas, dos santos, and jeffren.

Anonymous said...

Jeffren will be sold. Besides, Thiago is much better than Jeffren. Thiago is better than 2 Santos too.

skanjos said...

i agree with gelson 2 more players can help alot in rotation 2 from afellay/ardan and kompany/cesar and we are set to go. thats 20mil at most.

the thing is we should try to face the problem now,not avoid it and hope to be extremely lucky in order to say we were right, and if we fail they take the blame?how can they take the blame by resigning?its the last year of the board...... this team is one of the best in barcas history, its the teams chance to write history, one man cant take blame for ruining the teams future, and that is what this board is doing now,i really really hope we end up extremely lucky and not have many injures this season, cause with that small squad it will be harsh

bosnian_likes_barca said...

Real Madrid dropt a price for Sneider and he cost 15 millions. We should buy him immidetly, so low price for fantastic young player who could help us in the middle a lot. Same thing is abouth Robben, he's not so expensive but great player, if Real would be stupid to sell him, we should buy him for about 30 millions or less. It would be nice to have one of theese players, or both, only if Real would be so stupid to sell them to us. For me, 45 millions for two of them is great job. For me, Robben is not worse than Ribbery at all, and he could integrate in Barcelona style very fast and well.
