Jonas happy with Barcelona link

Asked about the rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona (read more here), Newcastle United player and Argentine international Jonás Gutiérrez (26) has said in an interview with Catalan radio station COM Ràdio that playing for Barcelona would be a dream:

"I've indeed heard some reports that Barcelona would be interested in signing me as right back defender.

The truth is that it's a great team. They proved it last year by winning everything. Being part of a great team, playing with great players, that's a dream for everyone. But it's something I don't want to think about right now. I'm focusing on the new season with Newcastle.

I can play both as right back and in midfield. One always tries to adapt to what the coach or the team needs. If I have to play as right back, I try to do that the best I can. I'm always trying to improve. I think the two positions aren't that different."

He is a good player, very fast. Montoya isnt ready yet and we need Puyol to play only as a central defender so Jonas would be a great choice for right back.

i prefer rafinha

As a defender?...Sounds like a terrible idea

He is a right/left winger as far as I know and not a great one.Fast but with mediocre technique.

dont know a great deal about this guy except he is fast

doesnt he start for argentina? if he can play left wing, then i wouldnt mind barca going for him, he would be very cheap and a decent player. good enough for backup, bad enough not to resent bench time. in other words, the sort of player we need for the "must win" games against small teams

Newcastle is seeking to offload him since his contract is rather expensive considering Newcastle will play in Championship and not Premierlegue this season. It is claimed by UK sites that Newcastle would settle for a fee around 5 mil (he was acquired from Mallorca for 6 mil)

By the way Anurag...you are right he is starter for Argentina national team and being transferd could be ideal for him in order not to lose his place for the upcoming world cup

i prefer him to rafinha and that ching???? he will do great plus he will accept rotation, this should be the players that we target not over hyped players who will turn out to be flops. At least he is not hyped..lol

I would think Newcastle would accept 3-4 million because they have to get rid of all the big wages on their bill.

If he's good enough to start for Argentina, he's good enough to at least have a rotational/backup spot on our team, especially given we only have about 18-19 players we can count on. As the 20th guy he's absolutely fine, and no worse than someone like Guddy. He's also had La Liga experience which is huge.

nicolas he was acquired from mallorca for almost 14 m euros. first they paid 2m then mallorca went to court to yield more n they won teh case so they paid more 10m pounds. n luis suarez is not one of teh biggest talent look at afonso alves when he was at heerenveen he was scoring just like suarez n went top middlesbrough for 16.3m euros n look at him now, useless n worthless.

I keep getting this terrible feeling he'll just be another Hleb or Caceres.

I would love to see him in Barcelona. Much more than Rafinha.

Jonas always gives his best, and fights his ass of, whether he plays as rightback, or as a midfielder.

Rafinha is a lazy bastard, who wont be able to cover for Daniel Alves.

Rahul, thank you for the correction

Goal.com says he is on the verge of signing for us. I don't know what to say man! Dreamed of some nice signings like Arda or Afellay & we are ending up with Jonas... If it turns out to be nice buy I'm one of the happiest cules, but if not I'll be pissed for losing out on the likes of the players I've mentioned. I can't picture Jonas doing good against big oppositions like Madrid, etc :(

I would go for jonas, for reasonable price ofcourse. I see him as good utility player who can cover a lot of positions and that is what we need in this situation, when we are lacking of depth

i have only seen Jonas play a couple of games for Argentina And he hasnt impressed me at all. He is deffenently not a "crack" player.

Soha_TZ said...

IMO we don't need cracks, we have them already, unless you want us to become real madrid. What we need is depth, because our team is, as some of guys here said, thin as a needle

He played for argentina against france as a left winger in a recent friendly and scored the first goal.

Maradona has apparently said a few days ag, something like: "For me, Argentina is Messi, Mascherano, Jonas and eight other guys."

Andréssibraviqué said...

first it was masch & 10 others
later on it was Messi, Masch & 9 others
now it's Messi, Masch, Gutierrez & 8 others

Hope Mardonna is not again stoned

Isn't he a current Argentine internatinoal?? He would not be in the starting 11 for Argentina if he wasn't any good.

With Newcastle relegated we could get him for under 10 million, although I personally prefer Rafinha.

Andréssibraviqué said...

He is NOT Full-Back... He's selected for his national team as a winger and NOT full-back. May be we are actually considering him as a back-up up front and our stupid media mistaken that to be considering for RB

Unknown said...

Andress, that could be the plan all along. I remember a few weeks ago Pep, planning on using Maxwell as LW backup as well as LFB.

We need someone who can take over when Henry isnt performing. This guy is not good enough to do that. I have seen this guy play on almost any position on the field, but he is deffenetly better as a winger

ifotbol said...

You are right Andres. Maradonna said that it was Mascherano and 10 more and now this. He needs to get his game together and talk less. As for Jonas he is a hard worker, not the best player but let's wait and see. If it's for a reasonable price he looks like a decent option.
