Shakhtar winger Willian on winter target list

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona is still interested in Shakhtar Donetsk winger Willian Borges da Silva (21).

The Brazilian player would be on the list of possible winter transfers, but with a contract until 2012 and a buyout clause of 30 million euros° a transfer seems difficult.

Last year, Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain would already have met once with Nikola Franco, the agent of the Brazilian attacker, in the Camp Nou offices (read more here), but this then didn't lead to any concrete result.

What is the point of buying him when he already is bought by Shakhtar? We should buy before rich clubs buy them.

rObReV7 said...

Yeah, but Barca is a few steps up from Shaktar. Just like we bought Ronnie from PSG in 04'

Anonymous said...

Or just like we bought Caceres from
Villarreal last year, paying 16 times what Villarreal paid.

frett said...

Barcelona cannot buy on the cheap like Villarreal can.

I still think we are short in MC position, we have 5 players(keita, busi, xavi ,iniesta, toure) to cover 3 positions all season and keita and toure are going to ACN so we must sign a MC player, Hernanes is avalible for 10m.. visca!!

Seem like a flashy player that doesn't score that many goals. I would prefer our own wingers (Jeffren and Gai) over him. I think, if we are going to strengthen our wings, that a class player is the only way to go. How on earth could this Willian-guy compete with what we already have? And he is expensive as hell! It's better to buy a player that is more likely to fill the shoes of Henry next season (Ribery, Silva, even Mata) than splashing cash on a "hit or miss"-guy. We already have those in our youth-teams.

frett: Milan paid 6m euros for Kaka. Sure it is possible to buy cheap and smart if you have a good scout network and good negotiators (not Txiki, lol!)

Buying from clubs like Shakhtar and Villarreal certainly is a very bad idea frett, instead of buying them cheap from Brazil or Argentina as these clubs have alot of money and can afford to play tough with Barcelona.

Now that Willian is in Shakhtar, expect the price to be 3 times as high as we could have bought him from in Brazil.

This guy i good. The only one that I was impressed by during the superCup final.
Fast, technical, good passing skills and vision. What we saw in the final,he played like a midfielder. Maybe cuz we was to offensiv..

But like one of ya said; I prefer Pedro,Jeffren and Gai over this guy.

Anonymous said...

God, give us Mata.

Anonymous said...

Mata is so average. Nothing special. There are no good left wingers available. We missed Arshavin and went for Hleb instead. That was the train we missed and currently there are no more trains arriving.

Bogman said...

Perhaps there are no trains arriving at the moment, but as we all know by now: Barca make their own trains. Let's se if Bojan (or Jeffren) can break through and challange Henry for the first eleven this fall. Maybe we dont have to by a new winger at all?!

frett said...

Kaka was another era, since then scouts are all over Brazil. And when Barcelona comes knocking prices go up ten times. Live with it that Barcelona cannot buy any youngster on the cheap.

Anonymous said...

No they don't frett. It is just your excuse of defending the awful Txiki and his horrible negotiation skills. The whole football world are laughing at us when we say that Madrid destroys the market with their prices, while we buy 25m cup-tied defender from Ukrainian league and 50m + Eto'o for Ibra.

A poor club can not afford to simply ask ten times as much. They want and need to sell, and thus; Barcelona are in a much better position. On the other hand, when you buy players from clubs like Villarreal and Shakhtar, with filthy rich owners, they can afford to ask a ridiculous price. This is basic negotiation tactics, frett.

Milan paid 20 million for Pato. So,we are not the only ones.

Anonymous said...

Bogman: Jeffren will never be good enough. Just watch him play, it is quite obvious. He is lined up to be sold, the only reason he wasn't, was because we couldn't sign a left winger.

Anonymous said...

Pato is much better than Caceres.

Kxevin said...

Pedro is a right-sided player. I would take Willian over Mata or Jeffren any day of the week. He was the only Shakhtar player creating any danger for them, and he tracked back on defense any number of times.

Don't forget that Shakhtar's coach hinted that there might be other transfers coming our way. I'd be very pleased if he were one. He's one of those guys who is almost as fast with the ball as he is without it.

As far as a goal-scoring winger, Henry has set a high bar for production in that left-sided position. We won't get anything approaching that when he leaves next season.

Frankly, I'd take Willian over Ribery.

String said...

Kxevin! Willian over Ribery! The world has truly gone mad.

frett said...

You can cry as much as you want, Anony but we cannot buy youngsters on the cheap, period. If Villarreal asks for Henrique, he will cost 2 millions, if we ask for him they will ask 8 millions. Simple as that.

What about Piqué: 5 millions for a world class defender. Touré: 9 millions for the best DM in the world. Maxwell: 4,5 millions. Keita: 14 millions. And what about all our youth players for 0 euro. You have always people who complain and look at the negative side of thing.

TengkuAmir10 said...

Everyone who thinks of getting Ribery can just forget it.It's like we're getting Cristiano and Kaka from RM for 20 million each.Seriously,it is not realistic at all.RM will surely be the one that will buy him because of Zidane and Real is his favourite club(obviously). We are not going to get him and i think he is overrated.

He doesn't score goals more than 20 per season. The only thing i see in him is that he is VERY VERY VERY fast.Faster than Henry,Messi and Ronaldo.Besides that,Nothing. If Henry was 26,i would prefer Henry rather than him.

Anyway,i still think we should get Villa or Ashley Young.I see future in him.He is just like Arteta, plus, younger and to all those who say he would prefer to play in England in Aston Villa rather than coming here in Barcelona is seriously one of the craziest things i've ever heard.

Anonymous said...

LOL, you are destroying your own argument, frett. You just give examples of great players on the cheap, which is perfectly possible with good scouting, even for Barcelona.

Caceres for 16,5m euros made Txiki look like the dumbest fool ever. You can't defend it by saying that we had to pay this amount for that average player because Villarreal asked for it. It was probably among the top 10 worst buys in La Liga history. At least, if we had bought him from Defensor, he would have costed 4m euros according to you (4 times what Villarreal paid). That is far lower than the 16,5m we put in the toilet.

Barcelona can buy players on the cheap. Man Utd bought Vidic for 7m euros, Liverpool bought Skrtel for 6m euros. Just because you are a big club doesnt mean you have to throw money in the toilet.

Anonymous said...

And buying players from filty rich clubs, one year after they joined from a much smaller club shows a great lack of scouting network

Kxevin said...

String, Willian has better pace, and is a pure winger, rather than a winger who finds himself drifting to the middle.

Ribery also needs the ball a lot, so I'm not completely sold on him in our system (yet). And Ribery is going to be very, very expensive. I predict now that if we go for him next time he's available, people here will blanch at the numbers being bandied about, and call whomever is negotiating for us "stupid" and "a sucker."

Willian's up side is huge. Ribery is pretty much as he is going to be, with improvements here and there. There's also a 5-year age difference, 21 for Willian vs 26 for Ribery.

Pace, ball skills, passing ability and willingness to play defense? If he were a canterano, people would be screaming bloody murder about him not getting a chance. And I'm betting that Shakhtar wouldn't want the full asking price.

I wouldn't say that the world has gone mad, as much as more (maybe too much so) thoughtful.

frett was pointing out the good buys of txiki. barca have never been a club to get up and cominmg players from brazil (with the possible exception of kerrison which could prove a master-stroke)- romario - psv, rivaldo - depor, ronaldo - psv, ronaldinho - PSG. its better to let players come and adapt to europe then get them.

frett said...

I just gave some counterweight for your "he can't negotiate" argument...

Villarreal only bought half the rights of Caceres. Get your facts straight first.

Man United paid 7 million for Vidic: so what! We bought Pique for 5 millions. Which is a better deal.

Again: some people only see our bad transfers and the other's good transfers. Let's forget about all Man United's or Liverpool's or Milan's transfer failures but let's only point out their good buys and our bad buys... Some people always look for things to complain about.

Anonymous said...

I dont think we should plan on getting Ribery at all, he will go to Madrid. As for Willian, he is not versatile enough, we should buy Douglas Costa instead because he scores more goals and is a much better passer. That is, if we dont buy Robinho.

Anonymous said...

SJP: You are talking of a myth. Romario? That was 15 years ago! Much more relevant to mention Caceres who was bought after "adapting", which meant the price was skyrocketing, and it became a huge failure. This should be a lesson for us. Not what was done 15 years ago, thinking we can buy another Romario for 5m euros from PSV. Has this Willian guy really improved that much since his days in Brazil?

fcbee said...

If we can sell Caceres for 11-12 millions to Juventus it won't have been all that terrible. That's transfers, you win some, you lose some. Caceres was bad, Pique was great. In the end it's balanced. It's too easy to scream for the sideline.

Anonymous said...

I do think our scouting system sucks. Henrique was not that great in Palmeiras and the Palmeiras fans was happy to see Keirrison go. Keirrison is nothing special, he is extremely lazy and doesn't contribute to the game. Looks like we just looked up his goal statistics and decided to buy.

Anonymous said...

fcbee; but shouldn't we learn from our mistakes? Keep in mind that Pique was our own youth product though. Buying back our own youth can never be considered "great". We would never have gotten him if he wasn't a Barcelona player to begin with.

fcbee said...

Let's wait and see what will happen with Henrique (doesn't look good...) and Keirrison (far too early to judge).

And I wouldn't point at the scouts in the Traffic transfers anyway...

Anonymous said...

Fcbee: If you have never seen Keirrison play, I understand your point, but if you actually watched him play with Palmeiras you would know what I talk about.

It is like saying it is still far too early to tell if Jeffren will be the next Pele.

fcbee said...

We'll see, you can't predict those things.

Anonymous said...

Of course you can predict these things. If you know the player isn't good, you can predict that he will not be a success at Barcelona. If you think Phil Neville is amazing, then you can predict that he will be amazing for us in midfield.

fcbee said...

Good for you that you know!

Anonymous said...

You would know too if you had actually watched him play before. Just like I am sure you would know that Phil Neville would not be a success in Barcelona right?

fcbee said...

Good for you that you know, I'm happy for you!

In my opinion, the current Barcelona management should not make heavy investments and spend big in the winter transfer period as next June there will be a new management, better to leave the funds for their project. If something is urgent like the injuries of RM last december, then ok you're forced to get players.

Anonymous said...

If the board do make heavy investments during winter transfer, that would in fact be a boon for barca. For one we are obviously strengthening our squad. And secondly, the new board, even if whose president is not sharing the same ideology as Laporta, won't be able to fuck up with the financial status that barca is enjoying thanx to Laporta.

tero said...

IMO we shouldn't splash big money on LW since we have Iniesta,Henry,Bojan and possibly Pedro/Jeffren/Gai as back-up.I'm not saying we shouldn't buy a LW,just that splashing huge money is not good after we spent big on Ibra and Chyggy

Barca2009 said...

I think we should go for a modern left-winger like Dzsudzsák, who's an amazing player.

Anonymous said...

@TengkuAmir10; Ribery will NEVER score 20 goals a season . He is a 7-8 goals a season player in his career. He is good but he is NOT that great . Besides, as you mentioned he will not come to Barça . He is being brainwashed by Madrid's new minister of propaganda: Zidane . We don't need him . I just read in a Dutch newspaper yesterday that Real Madrid's debt is around 800 million Euros . Nice !!

Boat Forever said...

Ribery is just an over-rated prick. He can't score many goals. But then to be hailed so much he must at least provide significant number of assists but he doesn't do that either. Just a flashy player who's got amazing control on the ball and has some pace to add to that. And we need a scoring winger, the likes of Aguero, Mata, Joe Cole, Luis Suarez, etc who have an eye for goal.
But as I said previously I no longer doubt Pep's transfer decisions. Looking at Adebayor(his performances for city) & Arshavin I think I no longer would doubt Pep's choices. It's not that the options that he's not considering are mediocre! He looks only for established players(read Masch, Cesc & Robinho) or the ones who make deadly impression on him(Chygra) Anyway back to the topic of Ribery, I trust pep & may be there's a reason to back that as well. Ribery never fails to impress when he plays for France. May be he'll score more when surrounded by equal talented players.

Anonymous said...

He looks interesting but i think we should buy someone big like Robinho Robben or Ribery if possible

barca96 said...

no robinho please..ive been following him since his days in santos cos i got a brazil soccer channel..he really doesnt live up to the expectations..he is not even in the top 10 best wingers(left winger).
we can better get someone who can play cf as well so that they can switch during the matches with ibra like how etoo-henry and ronni-etoo did..
