Barcelona plans at least four summer transfers (1)

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona plans to buy at least four players during the coming summer transfer window.

Adding some new motivation to the group, expiring contracts and the Africa Cup are the three main reasons to renew the squad and look for a central defender, a left back defender, a versatile midfielder and a left wing attacker and/or a centre forward.

Central defender
Although there are still uncertainties about the renewal of Rafael Márquez (30) (read more here) and the return of Gabriel Milito (28) (read more here), Barcelona doesn’t plan to invest in another central defender. Henrique (22 - picture), who played on loan with Bayer Leverkusen this season, will join the team next season, despite the demand of the German club to keep the Brazilian for another year (read more here).

Left back defender
Although he’s having a good season, the contract of Sylvinho (34) will probably not be renewed (read more here), while Eric Abidal (29) could return to Lyon (read more here). There are few candidates to fill this spot. CSKA Moscow left winger and Russian international Yuri Zhirkov (25) is an option (read more here), while Manchester United left back and French international Patrice Evra (27) and Inter Milan left back Maxwell (27) are also rumoured to be among the targets (read more here and here).

Versatile midfielder
Because Yaya Touré and Seydou Keita will teke part in the Africa Cup at the beginning of next year, Barcelona wants to sign another midfielder. With Arsenal midfielder and Spanish international Cesc Fàbregas still being the ideal candidate (read more here), São Paulo midfielder Hernanes (23) could again be an option after his transfer failed last summer (read more here). Eidur Gudjohnsen (30) could leave if a good offer comes in (read more here).

You will be able to read the second part of this post later today.

Will Barca go for 2 left backs, if both Sylvinho and Abidal leaves, a high profile and one like Cote og make due with Puyol and Caceras as backup?

zhirkov is going to chelsea. henrique, i haven't seen him play much but we already have a lot of central defenders. If we renew marquez it's a bit pointless.

Fabregas, good player but i doubt barça will pay up for him when we still have iniesta, xavi. what about busquets, he's good, it will endanger his progress. I also like keita. guddy is less good. but why not getting dembele of az, he can play as a striker or attacking midfielder and left wing. the same type as guddy but much better in one to one and with his back to the goal. maybe there's also a player in atletic team. I see that longas is getting good grades and he's a midfielder. i would surely promote pedro, sanchez and botio to the first team.Maybe even jeffren and gai.

Ribery, maxwell or that spanish talent, dembele would be good replacements for the ones that leave.

When Toure and Keita leave for the African Cup of Nations, Busquets can fill in but fatigue and little niggles and illness' can cause his to miss a game or two and force to play without a DM so we should probably sell Keita and with that money, get Marcos Senna. I know people will argue with me over this but IMO he was the player of the tournament for the EURO'S. He played in a different position than he normally does in Villareal and that's why he isn't as good in club level. For Spain, he played as a DM and is pure class. He is also a good passer and shooter. Also, he can replace Xavi as the creative midfielder guy because ATM we have no one to cover for that role in the team.

Keep in mind that Marquez and Pique can both play as DM! So I dont think Yaya and Keita being away for some weeks will be a great problem. We also have Busquets and Gudjohnsen and Iniesta. Eto'o being away will be a problem though.

@Anon(1)- xavi was the player of the tournametn in euros not senna but i can't see barca buying senna.

@Anon(2)- eto being away will be an unsettling problem, this is why i hope they sign a new striker whether he stays or goes. relying on gudi to fill a gap for a first eam player is risky i don't think he can play in barcelona, he will be sold if hernanes is bought.

Not much to say, except if we sell Abidal, we're crazy. Look at what happened to the defense when he went away. Even when we get clean sheets, it's usually because the other team's striker misses something. But there are opportunities galore. Yikes! Can't wait for summer to end, so the crazy talk can stop.

We ahve enough guys (Busquets, Marquez, even Iniesta or Xavi) to cover for Touré and keita, so why buy a player because they will be away for one month?! Let's spend wisely.

Our main targets should be a new LB,LW and CF.No need to buy a new midfielder, even if it was Cesc.Busquets is doing great and like Anonymous said,Marquez can play DM position also.By the way, great to see Henrique in Barca shirt
