Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain and Barcelona head of football Raül Sanllehí met Wednesday morning with Iván Corretja, the agent of Barcelona midfielder Xavi (28).
Barcelona, that rejected several offers for Xavi from European top clubs this summer, asked for the meeting that was seen as a first contact regarding a contract renewal (read more here).
Barcelona wants to reward Xavi for his recent performances, especially with the Spanish national team at the European championship last June, and will offer the Catalan player a new and better contract that will link him longer to the club. Xavi's current contract expires in the summer of 2010.
The paper reports that the meeting was held in an excellent atmosphere and that, even when it was just a first informal moment, both parties were already having a very good feeling about being able to close a deal in the future (read more here).

Thank god. The man deserves it. He is blaugrana through and through, and deserves every cent we give him, and more. Imagine how much money he could of got with Chelsea, but chose to stay with us? I mean, I'm sure we are paying him a lot, but Chelsea pays ridiculous wages.
Barcelona is so lucky for having one of the rare players who still consider themselves as Club members, not as employees! Players like xavi, gerard, Totti, and Zanetti(inter) are too hard to find these days.
I will not talk about quality, because for me loyalty is what make this man so special!
If you stop to think about it Xavi's one of the more underrated players in Europe, in spite of his recent success and accolades at the Euro's.
Xavi is not only the "heartbeat" of the midfield but he and Puyol make up the "fabric" of the Barcelona football. It would be unthinkable to see either of them donning another shirt!
It's also refreshing to see loyalty (which so often is just "word speak") being shown by both parties involved.
