Ronaldinho has to report for training next week

Barcelona has announced in an official statement on its website that Ronaldinho has to report for training next Monday and that he won't be allowed to play at the Olympic Games. The statement reads as follows:

Ronaldinho, called upon for the 14th

www.fcbarcelona.cat

The Brazilian player will have to report for training on Monday, the first session of the 2008-09 season.

FC Barcelona have announced that Ronaldinho will be expected to report for training on the forthcoming July 14. The player has been named in the Brazilian Olympic squad to play at the Beijing Games from August 6 to 24.

The Olympics do not form part of the official FIFA calendar, and no official decision has ever been made in that respect, so the club is under no obligation to allow its player to travel.
In recent weeks, technical secretary Txiki Beguiristain has reiterated that Barça’s objective has always been to have as many players as possible ready in time for the Champions League qualifying games.

FIFA Rules
FIFA’s regulations with respect to the release of players to represent their national associations states in article 1.2 of annex 1 that “The release of players … is mandatory for matches on dates listed in the coordinated international match calendar and for all matches for which a duty to release players exists on the basis of a special decision by the FIFA”.

pep's opinion:
hope they also informed the player or his entourage personally about this, cause this seems a weird (public) way of handling this. and what about messi then? does he also has to report? why isn't that out on the site then? hope the club's lawyers are right on this one. in other countries it's apparently believed that players who are kept away from the olympics by their club team are suspended from all offcial competitions during the games. can see us play with ronaldinho and messi in the champions league qualifying games and then be suspended for champions league football over the next five seasons cause they played. plus in those matches messi gets injured for six months. and ronaldinho too so we cannot sell him anymore in this transfer window. read - my - lips!

haha ya I'd say let him play in the olympics, might be good for him to have warm up games before gettin down to business with us during the season, if he stays....plus he makes Brasil so much better! and I love seeing him with the national team...hope they make the right choice and don't get in trouble.

Remember that we are also contesting the Messi Olympics appearance. Seems that if we are telling Ronaldinho that he can't go, it's only right that Messi shouldn't be able to as well.

T'wouldn't be the best thing for Guardiola to start out the new regime showing favoritism.

Very interesting public statement.

forget reporting for training. we need to hire Stoichkov to follow Fat Ronnie around as his personal trainer/secretary. that'll either get him into the proper physical and psychological shape, or kill him. the middle ground of letting him do whatever he wants obviously isn't working.

I think you HAVE TO let U23-players join the olympic squad, if they are over 23 years, the club who buys his wages has every right to keep the player ;-)

Well give Barcelona credit for sticking to their policy. They are doing the same with Messi. So to grant Ronaldinho's wishes would smack of hypocrisy. I'm not agreeing with the policy mind you, but if Barcelona are planning on playing hardball with the two then they better be prepared if things get ugly....which inevitably they will.

How Barcelona can arrive at the conclusion that playing for club is greater than country is beyond me? Yes, I understand the club pays the players wages, but I've yet to hear of a player who would rather "die" for his club than his country. And allowing 'Dinho the opportunity to "run around" at the Olympics could turn out to be a blessing in disguise as hopefully he'll shed a few pounds and arrive at camp in much better shape than he's in now.

The guy above (well 2 comments above) is right. The U-23 players have to go if called up. The club however doesn't have to allow their players over this age group to go as this would cause problems for the new season. Peace. dont be worried guys, Barca is bigger than any player, Calm down. Mes Que Un club!!!!! Much Love.

So what if players want to play for their national team? If they care about it so much, they should demand to have a clause put in their contract. Otherwise, they have a duty to their club and a contract to respect. The players already have too much power with the Webster ruling! Whatever happened to respecting the sanctity of contracts???

I think that they're almost doing this out of spite. Ronnie has made it very clear that he is very excited to play in the Olympics this year and that is all he's focused on right now. This may be their way of getting back at him for the games he missed due to his "injury"... especially since Guardiola has made it clear that he's not part of his plans. What other reason would they have for not letting him play in the Olympics? I say let him go... if he does end up staying at Barça, why create more tension than there already is between him and the club, fans, etc.? Not letting him go will clearly make him very unhappy. Personally, in a perfect world I would love for Ronnie to get back to his best, make amends with the club, and retire in Barcelona... I think people forget what he's done for this club... he's simply an amazing player. Even this year, the last thing I can remember from him is the overhead volley from Xavi against Atlético... of those with the balls to try, most would have missed. I for one will definitley be sad to see him go. On a side note... since I found it about two weeks ago, this has been by far my favorite site on the internet. I can't get on without checking it. I have always thought that there couldn't possibly be anyone in the world who loves Barça as much as me... the fact that someone takes the time to do this blog has proved otherwise. Keep it up...

Well Imo If that's the case, then that means Ronaldinho will be staying with the club, and he won't be sold anymore, because if he is'nt going to be needed then it makes no sense why they want him to report to training. Messi does'nt have to because he's under 23, thus legally he's supposed to be able to play, but Ronaldinho is overage, so he needs permession from the club.

For the different treatment, I realized last night that it has all to do with the under 23/over 23 thing, so that remark was wrong.

The remaining issue is that Barcelona apparently wants to play it hard with Ronaldinho. Let's see how that one will turn out.
