Vote of no confidence

With a vote of no confidence against the current board, this is a historic day for FC Barcelona. Two conditions have to be met for the vote to succeed:

1) 10 per cent of the socio's should take part: this condition was already met with the vote being half-way
2) two thirds of the votes should be in favour of the motion (so against the current board)

When the vote succeeds, an interim board will be put in place and presidential elections will be held in the coming three months.

You can comment here on the vote and the result. The poll ends at 9 pm (local time). The result is expected to be known around 11 pm (local time). You can follow the election day on
the club's official website

118.528 members, called to the polls

www.fcbarcelona.cat

An electoral roll of 118, 528 club members have been called to take part in this Sunday’s censure vote brought by the club members Oriol Giralt and Christian Castellví against the board of directors. You can vote from 9a.m. to 9p.m.

This Sunday will decide the immediate future of FC Barcelona. The 118,528 club members with the right to vote will decide if they support the motion of censure, which would mean the cessation of the whole Board of Directors and the convening of new elections, or, if they vote no this would allow the present Board to continue their leadership.

As on the 15th of June 2003 –the day Laporta took over as president-, the voting will take place on a day when no football is played. Even so, that day was the biggest electoral turnout in the club’s history.

Who will vote?
All of the 118,528 voters who meet the following conditions: they are of legal age and are not legally incapacitated, they have been members for more than a year, their membership is up to date and they are included in the current electoral census as stated in article 41.

This census consists of 78% men and 22% women. As for age groups, the most represented are those between 31 and 45 and from 46 to 65 years of age, with 32% each. The group from 18 to 30 and people over 65 make up 18% of the electorate each.

The majority of the people on the electoral roll are from the city of Barcelona (42%). Some 38% come from the province of Barcelona, whilst 8% come from the rest of Catalonia. Another 8% are from outside Catalonia but still within the Spanish state and only 4% are to be found abroad. In order to vote you must go to the Camp Nou.

Where to vote?
These members will have to go to the Camp Nou in order to vote. From 9 o’clock in the morning to 9 o’clock at night, there will be 120 tables prepared for the members to have their say. These tables will be located between the South goal, the wing and the North goal of the stadium. Every member, according to their surname, has already been allocated a table from which to make their vote.

The question in the vote of censure
At these electoral tables the members will find two pieces of paper. One will say ‘Yes to the vote of censure’, which would mean the cessation of the Board of Directors, which would mean calling elections. The others will have ‘No to the vote of censure’ written on them, which would mean accepting the continuity of the present Board of Directors, until the end of their mandate.

Hey pep,
Can you please explain to me what will happen tonight? Is Laporta going down and we won't be able to buy players or is he staying? What do you think?

pep said...

The opinion polls of the last days seemed to indicate it's gonna be tight, with most of them giving laporta a "win" (although with over 50 per cent of the votes against his board). We'll see.

hey pep
i want to ask you about the result in the barcelona offical page in the rihgt half of page..a diagram..what colour is against Laporta and what colour is for him...or if you can tell me in procent..

thank you

pep said...

I don't know which diagram you mean (probably it's just something indicating how many peoples already went to vote and which percentage of the socio's that is).

In any case: there are no results yet as people are still voting (they can vote for another hour). Results are expected at 11 pm local Barcelona time, this is three hours from this post.

and how many percent is enough to Laporta is down...and how many people must vote..sorry on my english:)

pep said...

Must vote: 11 000 and something (this is the case, there are already over 20 000 votes)

For the vote to succeed: over two thirds (so 66,67 per cent or more of the votes) should be against Laporta. Or to say it in another way: Laporta stays president if he gets 33,34 per cent of the votes.

nothing wrong with your english, mine isn't perfect either, as long as we can understand each other!

TVCi is running on my TV at the moment, they showed some graphics (didn't understand what they said about it).

In this graphic, 59,6% voted YES!
I think that's the first calculations, let's hope this number won't increase.

geez..if u r a barca fan...u shouldnt ask those stupid questions...what would hapen if this or that...during these past 10 days even birds learn the situation over this..for me...ludacris act...

i like laporta...but his only mistake is his "war" with boixos nois...if he can step over his decision..and allow BN into nou camp...we would have a great atmosphere..and none of this would matter....

we ll se....for now...exit polls sugest that 60% vote against laporta...but 66% is number wich eliminate laporta...

I just dont know what to say in this situation
If Laporta wins that means Eto and Ronaldinho are gone
But if he lose that is also bringing some bad things
As true Barca fan I just want best solution but results will tell
Also must say that this is a fantastic blog that just got a new member

for me the worst senario will happen if laporta get less than 50% but more than 30%, which mean that he will stay but with less than 50% which mean the board will not b reliable enough and the stability of the club will not be the best during the following 2 years...so its better either the board go down or they stay with a percentage of 55%, so they stay but at the same time getting less than 60% will keep the options open for russel to run elections in 2010, while if the current board got more than 60%, it will be harder for him and laporta party will get extra confidence...or too much confidence so mistakes start to happen again...i will b happy with 55%to the board.

As we approach to a final result I am more and more convinced Laporta will stay. Not that i don't like idea, I must admit. After all, he made mistakes but any other president would also, but he also very successful in terms of trophies. I would give him another chance. He didn't look convenient in transfer deals through past years but this summer's transfer window proves that he took some notes from previous failures.

Q's - 1. When is the legal end of Laporta's mandate? 2. Is it possible to initiate a motion censure, for instance, at the end of the season 2008 / 2009?

Unknown said...

First 22% of votes are counted, and according to this preliminary results my assumption seem true.

LAPORTA STAYS

Result it very very tight (37 % to 62 %) so it remains to be seen how would it end up until all votes are counted.

I really hope Laporta wins. Before he became barca president barca was in crisis, no we´re a huge club with a lot of money aswell. I think he deserves another chance. If he loses, that means they can't buy anymore players this summer right? We still need 2-3 players..

Excuse my "bad" english.

46% votes counted, about 61% voted YES, 37% voted No, so Laporta stays almost for sure...YES!!!
I am not for or against Laporta, I am just for the best interest of the club, and I think that the Board shouldnt change AT THIS MOMENT, when Barcelona need stability and buying/selling players...

barcelonista said...

i will wait to see result in their offical page or pep´s comentar

and thank you pep for this great blog..

barcelonista said...

yes Laporta will stay..60.87 percent and 1.40 votes are in blank..

Unknown said...

Barca is back in transfer window :)
However, this motion clearly indicates that Laporta should be very careful. 60 % of socios voted against him.

Anonymous said...

He doesnt need to be worried cuz 60% voted against him cuz he cant be elected after his second era( which end 2010). This is great news for me! I also think that 60% of voters are very stupid people, who doesnt TRULY support club ( in good or bad)...What do they want?5 Liga titles and 5 CL in a row?!?!?!
NOBODY stays at the top forever, especially today...

Anonymous said...

60% vote against him...but only 1/3 of all barca club members went out and vote...so...lets say that araound 20-25 000 vote aganst him....of 118 000 club members....

pep i have got one question for you..when will be presented Martin Caceres in the camp nou like alves pique and keita..if you know please tell me...

thank you

Anonymous said...

@barcelonista...

lol..u are a tru barca fan....hahaha..

he was presented like 10 days ago..right after keita...

Anonymous said...

is it official that laporta's "won"? not sure what this could mean for the club, seems like he pulled a few slimey lawyer tricks to stay in power, transfers being ceased supposedly was a timed very well! maybe stability is best for the club, but 60% against is a slap in the face for the board, maybe they will sort their transfers out. shame we're gonna miss aguero

westinho said...

yeah indeed he was presented a while ago..check it out on youtube

Anonymous said...

yes it must be like that but in their offical page wasnt any picture of him...im doing a little presentation of barcelona transfers and i dont find any picture of his presentation in their page..there was picture of keita alves and pique so i thought that presentation will come in next days...

By my calcualations there were 39,389 votes cast. Laporta received 14,871(37.75%) of the vote as opposed to 23,870(60.60%) against. Laporta passed the 33% threshold by only ~1,715 votes.

33.4% of 39,389 = 13,155.926 ~13,156.

14,871 - 13,156 = 1,715

So less than 2,000 of the almost 40,000 votes cast decided Laporta's fate. To say he survived by the skin of his teeth is an understatement.

Laporta hung on, but the vote is very damaging. He might even feel the best move would be to stand down early and let elections happen sooner rather than 2010.

He might also ignore the result and hope that the football team will bail him out with a great season. Two goals against Man U and this vote never happens.

But any comprehensive movements of the sort that were planned are most likely off the table. Clearly this is as much a player popularity contest (Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Deco) as anything else. How else to explain the result, if you look at what Laporta has done for the club during his tenure. Socis ignored the presentation of the club's fiscal health and other good news, choosing to focus on two trophyless seasons. Never mind that a healthy club makes a great foundation for more silver, I guess.

So we probably keep Ronaldinho and Eto'o, they underperform for the club, we have to fire sale them next season rather than losing them on free transfer, and Giralt et al will have really done damage.

Laporta's term ends in 2010. No more censure votes can be essayed. But thanks to this vote, you can say he has one foot in the grave and the other on an oil slick.

This is, as has been pointed out, the worst possible result.

Oh, and here's a link to the official Caceres presentation. He even has a Barca Toon already.

I forgot to mention that when you take into account the 648 votes tha were either blank (540) or invalid (108)the figure of 1,715 drops to just over 1,000, (1,067) to be exact - had those votes counted against him. Again, Laporta must have had a lucky four leaf clover in his pocket, because he barely survived. The numbers show just how close he was to losing.

Anonymous said...

kxevin thank you for that link..

thanks

no-one seems to be talking about the club's monetary issues. didn't the club's financial status improve tremendously under Laporta's tenure? it's my understanding that Laporta is the reason why we have all of this money available to buy players, which as Kxevin rightly said is a great foundation for trophy-winning seasons. i don't really care for him as a person, from what i've read, but as a CEO and organizer he's been pretty successful, no?

pep said...

Laporta is damaged, let's see if he has the fighting spirit to pick it up. If he wins another league or (who knows, it can just happen like that) a Champions league, he will be able to leave throught the front door.

The question alsi is how the board members who have presidential ambitions will react. The first rrumours about people wanting laporta to had over power are already out.

I would prefer a period of calm, but I guess that won't be possible.

It's really striking that a clear majority of non-Catalan culés were against the vote while the actual voters (who mainly are Catalans) almost voted the board out.
