Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that the knee injury of Barcelona central defender and Argentinian international Gabriel Milito (27), which will leave the player out for six months, has changed Barcelona's initial transfer plans as the central defence is concerned (read more here).
The club will still bring in a new central defender to cover the exit of French central defender Lilian Thuram (36), whose contact expires at the end of the season. But Mexican central defender and defensive midfielder Rafael Márquez (29) will now certainly not leave the club in the summer (read more here).
Barcelona does not want to take the risk of starting the next season and playing the preliminary round of the Champions League in August with a new central defender linked to captain Carles Puyol. The experienced duo Márquez-Puyol should lead the Barcelona defence through the first months of the new season.

If he can get his motivation back, he can add so much to the team. Puyol/Marquez/Milito/Young new guy : this is very solid (in theory).
