Puyol, Xavi and Valdes offered to renew until 2014

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona central defender and captain Carles Puyol (30), Barcelona midfielder Xavi (28) and Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés (26) will be offered a contract renewal until 2014.

Together with Messi, Iniesta and Bojan, who already renewed their contract, those three players should become the core of the future team.

The first talks with Xavi have already taken place (read more here) and the real negotiations will start later this month.

I think it's a good idea to build a team around the cantera guys. They will less probably leave if some investor comes waving with his money so you have a more solid base there.

And what 'bout Eto'o? He's 27 and he has 5-6 years ahead of playing superior football. I think he'll accept renewal and maybe for less money. All in all, he deserves it.

They're now clearly focusing on the guys coming from the youth academy, those should be the base of the squad.

I think Eto'o's renewal will depend on his performances (and maybe on the fact if we can get Benzema next summer).

^agreed.

Valdes sucks like a porn star. I would be highly upset if I had to see him another 5 years...

agree with u guys... i'm really wondering how the goalkeeper question hasn't even occured in rumours over the past few years... we've got top class players everywhere but in goal... and i really don't think our staff and board are not realizing that...

At least Valdes can improve and possibly be sold if things don't work out. He obviously hasn't earned a big pay raise the last couple of years.

I'm more concerned with the fact that we're going to be paying Puyol until he's 36. He looks like he should retire at 32. I bet he got a big pay bump due to his service to the club and seniority. Which is scary because in two years we won't even be able to give him away on a free transfer. Are we paying him to be an extra coach? He's going to be the most expensive central defender on our team playing behind Pique/Caceres/Henrique and whoever else we sign from now till 2010-2011.
