Puyol and Valdes next on renewal list

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that, after the contract renewal of Bojan (read more here) and the first talks with Xavi (read more here), Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés (26) and Barcelona central defender and Spanish international Carles Puyol 30) are the next players who will be contacted to start renewal negotiations.

Barcelona aims to extend in the coming weeks and months the contracts of some of their key players until the year 2013 (read more here).

please not Valdez!

Does anyone in the Barca front office realize that he sucks?

Yes I agree...
He is terrible goalkeeper...

He does make a lot of mistakes but if you look at the statistics he is always top-3 goalkeeper in Spain and during the last years he have been competing with Casillas, Palop, Canizares etc. Give him some more support from the defence and a taller defence and the mistakes will not be made.

Yes, and yes. Valdes is one of the best keepers in the world. Rare is the goal that is his fault, and he stops a lot more than he leaks.

Every keeper has a bad stretch. You have to stretch to the likes of Casillas and Buffon to find his better.

Puyol you renew more as a thanks for exceptional service. Like Maldini at AC Milan (who is still playing....amazing!), he deserves to retire in Blaugrana.

Puyol and Xavi are, in my eyes, the only unsellable players on the roster. (I know....blasphemy!)

i have to disagree with Kxevin about Valdes. he's just not that good. he's had some good saves, but every keeper in his position would. he's not a standout excellent keeper: he's not even picked for Spain's national side. he's a GOOD keeper, but not an excellent one. comparisons to Buffon and Casillas are unfair because they are superhuman keepers. Valdes isn't even a Čech or Reina or Julio Cesar; the kind of keeper you'd expect at a club like ours.

Puyol's extension is, of course, just a matter of fact.

Yes everyone realizes that Puyol suck's but of course the dumbasses that are catalan dont cause their bias..He is at fault for many goal's scored agaisnt us but of course he never get's the blame just the other defender's do..

Puyol is not at fault for nearly as many goals as Abidal...when they start talking about renewing his contract is when I will get worried. As for Valdes, I think he is a good keeper that people rag on for no good reason. It's just that when he makes a mistake and it results in a goal it looks like it is all his fault...but think about how the ball managed to get back there and how many mistakes were made by players on the field for that to happen.

Puyol is not the man he was. Not even in the neighborhood any longer. But it's an issue of respect on the part of the club.

Unfortunately, there isn't a highlight (okay, more appropriately lowlight) reel of goals against us. Valdes' culpability in them would be found to be surprisingly low.

Keepers have a suck job. People in Madrid are probably saying that Casillas sucks for leaking two goals against Depor, and "He would have stopped those last year."

Ah, the tough life of a keeper.

Valdes has been shit the last year... he should not have come out for the goal against Numancia... hold your line and the ball doesn't go in the net. Granted, Abidal was in no man's land, but if Valdes holds his line, the ball gets saved. Cut the angle and let the defence close down on the striker. My prediction is he does not start by the end of the season if he keeps this up.

Puyol should always have a question mark next to his name. 50/50 man... will he or won't he... good or bad... no one knows until after the game. It's always been like that... believe it or not. 110% heart, 75% skill... take it or leave it.

There are like 4 goalkeepers out there that actually are better then Valdes. Buffon, Reina, Cech, Casillas. Most teams would be delighted to have Valdes in their squad. I don't think AC Milan would complain :P .

I guess this is a late answer and no one will read it, but just a football info for the Anonymous above, the keeper has to leave his line forward, that will make the goal shrink in the path of the forward, staying on the line leave the net wide open for the striker, its the same as when the forward come one on one against keepers, keepers dont wait on line, they move forward.

Valdes had to close on the striker and then pick a reflex and hope he get on the ball path, that was even harder than a penalty shot, the goal was the deffence fault.
