Offer from Roma for Eto'o

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona has received a formal 25 million euro° bid by Italian club AS Roma for Barcelona forward and Cameroonian international Samuel Eto'o (27).

This first bid could be a good starting point for further negotiations cause it's not far from the 30 million euro° (plus variables) that Barcelona is asking for the striker and the first formal talks would have been held between the two clubs.

A transfer agreement between Roma and Barcelona seems very likely with Barcelona wanting to close a deal before the 5th of August when they have to present the names of the players who will participate in the last preliminary round of the Champions League.

Roma has put aside 30 million euro° for this summer's transfers and wanted to spend that money initially by buying two players. With a world class player like Eto'o now on the market they are looking to change their strategy and could put all their money on Eto'o.

Both on an economic and on a sporting level, Roma could be an attractive option for Eto'o. His agent José María Mesalles has been informed of the talks between the clubs. Roma would have offered Eto'o a year salary of 6 million euro (plus incentives), while Eto'o would be asking 8 million euro (plus incentives).

SELL NOW! This is the only good and concrete bid we have right now. Eto'o is almost impossible to get rid of because of his ridiculous wage demands. He is sooooo injury prone and he always misses at least a couple of months of each season. Buy Drogba/Berbatov/Adebayor for the money and get Silva/Arshavin and this seasons team is complete!

I am so shocked people are saying sell Sammy to buy Drog. Drog is 3years older. He has started facing his own injury troubles and hes wld be @ leats 35 (real age). So why would barca want to sell at 31-32 yrs old Sammy to buy 35yr old Drog? sounds silly to me. And you dont want to destroy the team by calling call untested players to take over completely from the tested ones. U have to buy the "BENZEMAS" and let them learn and gradually take over from the ETOS AND HENRYS off this world.. the way FERGIE operates, scholes wont be missed cos Anderson is learning quick and fast. Scholes wasnt sold and replaced by Anderson..

What you need to realize is that Barca’s board’s thinking is backwards. They don’t think logically. Why would you want to get rid of Eto’o and keep hold of Henry? The former is a better forward, he’s proven it season after season, while Henry was a mistake. So they splashed the money for Henry and he turned out to be a flop. Now they are looking to replace Eto’o with Ade, Drogba, or Berba. All three have bigger egos and mouths than Eto’o, so will replacing a big-mouth with another big-mouth solve anything?
Also, they bought Hleb for 15 million and are paying him 4.5 million a year. That in my opinion is again a huge mistake. I knew a year ago that buying Henry would be a big mistake and I was proven right. And now I am convinced that buying Hleb was a mistake as well. He won’t add anything, just watch and you will see come next season that he will flop just like Henry if not worse. If they really wanted Hleb then they should have waited until next summer when his contract expires and then signed him on a free transfer. But of course, none of these points that I mentioned above seem to be logical in the eyes of the Barcelona board.
And selling Eto’o, one of the best strikers in the world, is not progressive thinking. It’s backwards thinking and that’s what the Barca board is all about. Watch us go trophy-less another season.

i don't see it that negatively as barcafan, i like hleb and his style but i also think hleb's money should have rather been invested in diego or joao moutinho.
we all love xavi and iniesta and their style but still, our most important midfielder over the last few years was deco, who added something the two don't have, more aggression, more leadership, just something different. i don't know exactly how keita plays but i see him rather as a kind of van bommel, someone who makes up the leak of physical presence caused by xavi and iniesta. therefore i think he is a good signing as davids and also van bommel where important when they were there. but we have no replacement for deco and there i think we should have gone for joao moutinho or diego who are both worth about 20million which is reasonable. joao moutinho could have been the new deco and diego would have even filled the gap ronaldinho left to a little extent.

anyway, both would have made up a part of the creativity we lost with the sales of deco and ronnie. i don't think hleb adds much new creativity to the team, he is more the iniesta type. for the same reason i wouldn't go for silva. i would definetely prefer arshavin who is a)highly motivated and b)something new, sth the squad doesn't have yet.

as for eto'o, i would also love him to stay. adebayor it too expensive, benzema and aguero are dreams, drogba seems to be staying at chelsea and berbatov is overrated, he would be a huge mistake and 30million just like eto'o which is crazy. roma is not bad, but still a step down, i hope eto'o won't do this...

I think a lot of you are putting the cart before the horse! Let's back up here and assess this rumor.

First of all I find it highly unlikely that Roma is going to splash anywhere near 30mil for Eto'o. Even if they had the money to do so, they would still have to agree to Eto'o's personal wage demands which apparently has become the major stumbling block in dealing him so far in this transfer window.

Secondly, consider that Roma primarily plays some variation of a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-1-4-1, which a lone "striker" upfront, in Totti. I can understand Roma's interest in Eto'o given Totti's recent rash of injuries and that he's not the most durable or reliable player out there - but I don't see ANY way that Eto'o and Totti would combine well together even if Spalletti tweeked his formation.

Yes, Eto'o is a better player than Mancini, but he's NOT the same player as Mancini either. Mancini played mostly off the wing, a secondary striker at times, Eto'o as we all know is a natural central striker. Eto'o plays best alone upfront like most central strikers prefer.

We all know that it's not a matter of "if" but "when" Totti goes down again, so Roma might be looking at Eto'o as a good insurance policy. We all know Roma is not the same team without Totti in the lineup, just refer back to last season's Champions League matches and you will notice that without Totti Roma had no clue and were playing like a bunch of headless chickens.

In conclusion the move makes sense for Roma to have a viable alternative in Totti's absence. But when Totti's healthy I don't see how both players can coexhist in the same lineup.

The reason for buying Berbatov/Drogba/Adebayor is that we need a new type of striker. I think that, the board think that and what's most important Pep think that. So then one striker have to leave unless we change our system and we will not do that. Henry were our top goal scorer last season and played a lot out on the left wing. Eto'o is probably the most injury prone player in the world, i think the choice is pretty obvious. Not to mention all the official statements from Pep and the board that Eto'o isn't wanted. LEAVE NOW!

BarcaFan, it's worth visiting The Offside/Barcelona for a very good statistical analysis of Eto'o and Henry. What you find runs very much counter to the contention that Eto'o is 100, or 1,000,000 times better than Henry, as some fans suggest.

http://barcelona.theoffside.com/team-news/samuel-etoo-and-the-value-of-statistics.html

Spaletti has admitted that Eto'o is on his wish list. Roma hasn't really splashed for anyone yet this transfer season. As Txiki said, there are four or five clubs seriously interested. It's up to Eto'o to get off his duff and do a deal, then Barca will do everything possible to make the player happy, as they did with Ronaldinho.

Hleb has already demonstrated his value in the pre-season matches, and will continue to do so as he gels with the side. Henry a mistake? Statistically, he was right up there with Messi and Eto'o, darlings of the fans. And he played much of the season out of position. What's the difference? We can all remember what happened when Eto'o was used as a winger, right? It sure wasn't almost 20 goals and as many assists.

Hleb is also physical, which is not true of Diego or Moutinho.

Alas, Cojonudo is right. I fear that we're stuck with a player the board/technical staff doesn't want, because he won't do the right thing and leave, as Ronaldinho did.

With statistics you can prove everything. If you don't see that Eto'o is so much better for this team, than you don't know much about football. You can discuss his character, but on the pitch there's just no comparison possible.

Let's not forget Guardiola doesn't just want Eto'o out but he wants a first class guy to replace him in, meaning he also doesn't believe in Henry, who will warm the bench this season with Eto'o or someone else as first striker and Iniesta, Hleb, Silva, Arshavin or I don't know who on the left.

Cojunundo..I don't see how totti and eto'o cannot coexist at Roma. Totti has played as the lone striker of late for roma because they simply have had no other real goal scoring options. Eto'o is surely a good insurance policy for the oft-injured totti, but you must remember that totti can easily play as an attacking midfielder or second striker, as he did for the azzurri and for roma for years. His play making ability from a withdrawn position could benefit eto'o greatly, and the clever interior passing ability of the unselfish eto'o could work well for totti also. Though totti is a recent european golden boot winner, we mustn't forget that his natural position truly is that of a supporting striker/attack midfielder. I could see this attack pairing being more than deadly in serie a and european competition, with eto'o playing alone up front and totti behind him. And as both are injury prone and capable of playing the lone striker, the transfer just adds all the more necessary depth to roma's thin attacking options.
