Thuram will retire

Asked about the future of former Barcelona central defender Lilian Thuram (36) who was close to joining his club (read more here), Paris Saint-Germain president Charles Villeneuve has said in an interview with Italian news agency ANSA that it looks like the player will retire because of a heart malformation:

"It's very likely that he will end his career, even if the new medical tests he underwent would bring good news. His sisters and the rest of his family urged him to stop playing. Personally I think it's unnecessary to take risks if you're thirty-six and you can look back on a great career."

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Thuram will receive the new results in the coming days and will announce his retirement shortly after that.

The contract of Thuram at Barcelona expired at the end of last season and with Barcelona not planning to offer the Frenchman a renewal (read more here), the player was free to negotiate with other clubs.

Very sad news indeed. The most capped player in the history of the France National Team. This guy's bio has "Hall of Famer" type credentials written all over him. Truly one of the great defenders of our time.

It was so heartbreaking to see his career end the way it did at the recent Euro's for France. I will instead focus on his greatness and the legacy he left not only to France but to the game of football as well.

May he lead a long and prosperous life.
