Roads Leading to Rome (part 3)

In the First part we discussed more the nature of Champions' league, the kind of challange it require, and we started to figure out where Barcelona stand at the moment.

After a break in the Second Part with some of the consepts involved in nowadays football universe, we bounce back in this part to continue discussing things Barcelona needs to improve to enhance champions' league hopes.

We didn’t solve the “Counters' Blind Tunnel” we create when we move forward.

Thats a defect in our system: when we move forward, we create a three central backs line, one defensive midfielder, while the rest of players move to serve the offense operations in and around the box. The first clear return of this structure is the space created between our midfielders on the edge of the box and our defenders stepping on the midfield line. That’s more than (30m X 68 m) area where we only have one player – defensive midfielder- to cover. If the defensive midfielder moved closer to the offense operation lines, he will be able to gain the middle range opponent clearance. Yet, a long range clearance may catch the defensive midfielder out of position. It gets worse if we play Marquez and Pique together as Central Backs, or if we miss Abidal. Abidal is the only proved defender who has enough pace to catch a counter that pass the highly positioned defense on the edge of the Midfield line. Puyol also has the fighting spirit to create a cover as well, to some extend.

During the group stage, the defense weakness was completely covered by our offense brilliance. To give a clear idea about how fragile our system make us when we face the counters, this is a short report:

In our group we had to play against:

Sporting: so far in the third place in Portugal league.
Shakhtar:Fifth in Ukrain league.
Basel: Second in switzerland league.

Keep all that in mind, because thats far from the kind of clubs we will meet in knock out stages.
I will avoid pointing on our rank defensively based on the other teams reaching the knock out stages, because most of them had a more difficult teams to play against in knock out stages, yet they conceded less goals, most of them at least.

Instead I will compare our defense to the defense of the other teams in our group. Even though they played a more conservative games against us but the numbers show an unexpected sign:

- Basel and Shakhtar (together) failed to score any goal against Sporting in 4 games played home and away. They scored 2 goals in 3 games against barcelona, 5 goals in 4 games if you take the last game against Shakhtar in consideration.

- Basel and Sporting scored 3 Goals in Shakhtar net in 4 games, they scored 4 goals against Barcelona in 4 games.

- Sporting and Shakhtar scored 10 goals against Basel in 4 games, they scored 4 in 3 games/7 goals in 4 games including the last game barcelona Played against Shakhtar.

This is a very direct comparison. It shows that even though our offense forse the opponent to get squeezed in their own area, the opponents are still finding it relatively easier to score against Barcelona than scoring against each other. Only our scoring machine upfront covered this defect. But it will not be the case against those who are better than third, fifth and second in their own leagues.

CASE STUDY:

As a living scenario, I will pick Man Utd (the current champions of the world), and imagine their coach playing a 4-3-2-1 at the Nou Camp. Four defenders plus three Defensive-midfielder-like players to create the defensive Bus, with the trio Tevez-Ronaldo-and Rooney rotating for the three other roles (yes I dropped Berbatov). Giving the instructions for Ronaldo to run through Alves Territory, and instructing Rooney or Tevez to stay close to Barcelona deepest defender while the third player with his high work rate bark for any cleared ball, racing the wind for it. The first result is the insecure feeling Barcelona will get when Alves move forward while Ronaldo positions himself on the right. We cant afford losing Alves in the offense operations, so one central defender will have to move wide to cover the right flank. One marker without support will not be enough so: either our defensive midfielder take Ronaldo in the midfield- unlikely because it leaves the field empty, or the other Defenders will be forced to create depth in case Ronaldo passed the fake right back. Moving the backline deeper will enlarge the space between backline and the rest of the team, while keeping them on the midfield line means getting beaten by the Man Utd trio pace in the counter. With the absence of sufficient cover infront of our defense, the opponent counters will be too fast for the midfielders transition to take place. Result? Man Utd defense clear the ball to the empty space mentioned above, a Man utd player receives it and plays it to the other empty space between our defense and Goalkeeper, then a race between Pique-Marquez and Ronaldo-Rooney/Tevez for the ball. Keeping in mind that Valdes is not the best libero-Keeper you can think about.
Before Betis game, it was understandable that some barcelona confident fans will find this scenario as "Unlikely". Watch Betis counters and you will definitely know what I mean.

This case study brief most of the alerts covered in this article. The solution is the mixed of everything discussed, we need to approach the champions’ league knock out stages as it needs, not as we succeeded to do in the liga. May be considering two defensive midfielders as a must for any tactical structure we apply in the Champions’ league will be a good start. At least after we pass Lyon. Last season, I was calling for a three players in the back when the team move forward instead of giving the two backwards the instructions to attack. It is happening this season when needed, we have more balance in the team this way and I like it! Now my new call is to have two defensive midfielders in front of our back when we play out of home in the Champions'. Let a combination of five players from the panel of Messi, Alves, Xavi, Iniesta, Gudjhonsen, Hleb, Bojan, Eto’o and Henry move forward squeezing the opponent box with no concerns. Noting that having two defensive midfielders is not less lethal at offense than the system currently applied. I can assure you its even more productive and generate more scoring opportunities, because we Barcelona fans know it well: dominate the game, and then enjoy your victory.

The Two legs Approach:

When I question our system compatibility with the Champions' league needs, I do not mean its less powerful. But the Champions' league force you to install more elements in your Game management. For example, your approach to the first leg game away from home must take the following in consideration:

- If you will play the second leg at home. you don't need to be so obsessed to finish the opponent away. All what needed is to come back home with a result that will make your life easier.

- When you play abroad, time is on your side. No need to rush to crush! Let the opponent feel they are running out of time, they need to score or else! Then you will hunt the result you are seeking.

- Keep being loyal to Barcelona Philosophy about earning back the ball fast, and dominating possession. Scoring will come as an unavoidable outcome of dominating the opponents at their homes.

You need to make sure the opponent do not score early. Dominate the possession (pst!Control the midfield) . Then you get advantage of their need to score a goal opening spaces at the back and you generate fast counters. Our Classical tactics of 4-3-3 do not serve these objectives. It either win you the game or throw you out of the Champions' league. One of the recommended tactics goes as follow:

This is one sample of possession+Counters strategy. A 4-2-2-2 can also be another option, where Messi play on the free role around the striker, with two midfielders and two Defensive midfielders behind. What I like about the one represented above is that it pulls the opponent out of their area, or else their stadium fans will put more pressure on them to get a good home result. It creates more spaces in the opponent half. It will insure that you dominate the midfield, and the match in return. And with fast counters you can score at least once, while the opponent will find no spaces to generate counters. The star on the right top show where I believe most of the game will be played. I don't think we will have to go deep in our half that often. Barcelona players are well known for being able to earn back the ball fast, and With this structure it will get faster. The red Zone show the area where we are fragile when we use our classical 4-3-3 as shown in the last frame of the animation to compare. Instead of having one player to cover your back(classical approach), this way you will have two, and without damaging Barcelona offense power. you do not need More than Messi-Iniesta-Xavi-Alves-Eto'o/Henry combination to move forward and hunt goals when you play outside Catalonia.

The impact of the domestic status of the opponents in their Champions’ league adventure.

This is a very important factor. The previous factors focus more on our own situation, but the opponent situation while approaching the game against Barcelona is as important. If we consider Italy, England, Germany and Spain as the main threats for us in this competition, we need to keep an eye on how things are going in the respective leagues. The more competitive it is, the better opportunity we will get to knock our opponents out of Champions’ league battle.

The Premier League: Man Utd may create a margin at the top of the premiership before heading to the Champions’ league semi Finals, especially after sacking Big Phill at Chelsea and the flu Benitez suffers from before every premiership match leading him to another bunch of weird decisions. The question is: Will Chelsea and Liverpool keep fighting for the second place till the end? Though it may not has the same energy-sucking impact on their CL chances. Aston Villa is the good news, if they can keep the pace with Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal then they can keep the big three alerted to continue fighting domestically for next year European competition seats till the end.

The new Chelsea coach makes them more dangerous in the Champions' league. My only doubt about him is that he never succeed with teams having Mega stars in their squads. Other wise, he is a tactical genius!

Man Utd are always dangerous, they have the squad and they have the coach who know how to manage and prepare his team for the big games, nothing they need more.

Liverpool Coach is a cup games expert, so there is no way you can exclude them, While winning back the injured players will make Arsenal a different team than what we have seen up till now.

Serie A: Roma will fight for the European seat till the end, while Milan is our hope to keep Juventus and Inter busy competing for the domestic title. Its a Priority for Inter to win the champions' -may be over winning the league. If Milan and Juventus failed to keep pace, they will be a team to beat. Juventus and Roma? You never know! when they ae in their good days they can beat any team.

La Liga: I believe Barcelona will end up creating the relaxing margin-yea I heard about the last draw. If Villarreal, Sevilla and Valencia kept on dropping points and losing form, they will secure the second place for Real Madrid. I think no matter how it goes the Champions’ league will be Real Madrid priority. More about our own Domestic Competitions status, beside the impact of Knock stages Draw on the club opportunity to win the Champions league, you can find in RoadMap to Titles:Trible?

Bundesliga: TSG Hoffenheim, good luck!

Though the impact of domestic games may not look crucial, but in the champions’ league every little detail counts, including the fact that close hard domestic competitions end up increasing the fatigue and injuries, if you know what I mean.

I am a believer in Barcelona chances to reach the final, to the extend that I am planning to be there if it happens – that’s if I succeeded to hunt a seat this time…- but if this article weavers some of your confidence that we will definitely be there, if you feel stressed, worried and uncertain. Now you are in the right state of mind and heart to enjoy the adventure of Champions’ league knock out stages.
Thats My saying regarding Barcelona challenge in the champions' league, now the stage is all yours.

Ramzi - you do great job all the time and thank you for that.

And even animations. Great!

Barca almost always will have a risk with counters from the oponents. It is like we "asked" for it because of our stile.
The oponents are always parking a wide bus infront of their g.k and Barca prefer to have the boll.

It is naturaly that even our backplayers come upper on field to bring a stronger press on the oponenet, and then it leaves an empty space for counters.

This is risky.

I don't think 4-2-2-2 or 4-3-3 (with two defensiv midf players) will make a big differnet. It is almost the same. Even 4-3-1-2 (Messi in the place of 1) is also guite the same.

To succed better this time in CL with need to do two simple things.

The one that already shows a big effekt is a realy big pressure on the opponents as early as possible (Starting with Eto'o and Henry and the others later).
It is also a risky becuase you have to come with many players on the opponent half, but you can win the boll faster and much closer to the opponent goal. Plus the opponenets backline is less organized when losing the boll så early.

We didn't do a realy high press against United in both home and away.

Second - even if there are small areas when attacking, we need to be much more moveable.
Sometimes tour attacking is very weak, beacuse messi etoo and so on standing and waiting.
Much more movments in all directions to bring better pass posibilities and confusing the oponent.

Not enough movments againt United last.

Summering:
4-3-3 with 2 defensive in the middle (away) and maybe only one home (Yaya and not someone else).

Much more movements when attacking and VERY agressive high press when defending.

Simple, but it might work.

And last: LUCK.
We need luck.

Cool, didn't know you were swedish FCB.

Ontopic: Great article as always Ramzi however I think you have excluded the importance of away goals as a factor. In my opinion it would be better the shock the opposition when we play away (especially when it's the first match) and get at least one of those important away goals.

Barca need to be more cynical and play more on results. Most teams are too cynical but sometimes when you see Barca play they are pretty naive.

Ramzi said...

Pep:Its the last part, you have my word! Its risky enough to write three parts pointing on Barcelona weaknesses while the team is in the winning cycle. I'll not add a forth gamble ;)

FCB:I kind of like the "stick to the style" principle. But no matter how perfect the team will be pressing the opponent in their own quarter, it will not give you the result expected defensively, even though it help to generate more scoring chances.
There is a technique in counters called "Clear to the flanks" where the defender do not have to look up for his mates to clear the ball toward (something he will not have the time to do when barcelona press high), so they directly clear the ball to the flank/s. no matter how high and aggressive you press, you cant avoid letting the opponent clear the ball to the flanks exactly in the area where you only have one player to guard.

Its even less risky to do the Rijkaard trick, asking Marquez to move little forward to act as a fake DM beside the natural one we already have when the team move forward and keep two CB behind, than to have that area all for the opponent counters.

Simon:I agree the away goal is important, thats why I mentioned that in the away games time is on your side so no need to rush to score. If the opponent score early they may close their half so you end up not scoring. If they didnt score early they will become more risky (home goals are important for them as well). I think when you move forward with five players like mentioned above, and when you have the right distribution of players all over the field, you will dominate the game, gain back the ball faster, push your lines higher without worrying of the counter threat.so you end up being more dangerous on the opponent.

granche:I noticed you commented on the article by mistake may be on another post:)I am not sure If I have been harsh on our defense, I only wrote information about goals conceded. And even in the league, lately we are picking the ball from our net more often than at the start of the season. I don't see it as a drop in form, but the other teams started to understand our style more. Thats something I sent an alert about in a previous part. Against Betis we were lucky they had no quality to finish their counters, or else I am not sure if the draw was attainable.

If you noticed, we are doing lot of "Come backs" lately, comming from behind to win or draw. It is something to be proud of, fighting spirit. but it will not be that easy against stronger teams than the ones we are playing against already.

Again, I am not saying we are not good enough to win the Champions', every team in the world has weakness. Our strengths are more than weaknesses so we can be hopeful. But still we have weaknesses, as far as I understand it.
Luck is a factor, but I don't take in consideration anything that I cannot change;)

Great read Ramzi and I really appreciate all the effort and time taken to post an article this long :)

There are a couple of points or remarks regarding what you said in the article, I didn't comment on each part separately because I am lazy but here it is:

- When you talked about the Case Study (I know it is just an example), but I consider it to be quite and extreme example to use. Man Utd are the Champions of the World as you have stated earlier, and the best team on the content to rival Barca. Not only did you choose Man Utd but you also used our slowest pair of center backs (Pique and Marquez) as an example. If the game in the Copa Del Rey against Espanyol taught us anything is that they are both slow, and are crazy enough to pick up cards more often than Puyi and almost cost us dearly.

Pep has always opted for using 2 DMs when playing away from home, so that area you talked about being really vulnerable is actually right, but not to the extent you make it appear to be. I am sure Pep has realized this problem and addressed this issue using several options.

Pep has only taken out one of the DMs when Barca are trailing by one goal or if they are pushing for a win. Or drop Iniesta back to CM and put Henry up there to create more chances, knowing that the other team is parking the bus like the game against Betis.

- You mentioned clearly how Barca are not that strong in the back, but we are fogetting several important factors:

1) The level of concentration in KO stages is going to be much higher, because half a chance (Scholes goal against Barca in the semi-finals last seasons is an example) will make a huge difference in whether a team progresses to the next stage or not.

2) Teams like you have referred to in the group stages are much weaker, but what you forgot to comment on is that the players also realize that. They also realize that the most important thing is the 3 points in every game and to top the group as soon possible regardless of what the final result or how many goals have been conceded. It is pretty much like in the Copa Del Rey, did we care how many goals Espanyol scored knowing that Barca were leading by 1 goal?

3) The final game as well is not fair to include, it was more like a friendly game and mere a formality rather than a CL game. Every player who did not get a chance to play and was named in the CL squad list got a chance in that game. Do you actually believe that Barca could have conceded 3 goals whilst playing Puyol, Marquez or even Pique? A better more dominating midfield which can create more chances for the players up front? Better finishers?

- You also mentioned that what is important for a team like Barca is winning titles regardless of how it is done, you used Cruyff as an example. What you forgot to mention is that there was a huge fall out behind the scenes between him and Nunez at the time and a clash of egos cost him the job besides how the team was performing afterwards and it was an end of a cycle.

For me, winning titles with style and playing the brand of football and philosophy that Barca plays and employs is what made me support this team in the first place. I do not disagree with you on the titles part, but adding the beauty and style and the way Barca have managed to win titles in the past is what make millions of fans like me and you around the globe love this team more. I know this adds another strain and more pressure on the team and manager to perform, but at the end of the day and after turning your TV set off, you walk away with a huge smile on your face rather than being burdened with watching a boring festival of football were you either pass out during the game or interest yourself in doing things while watch the game, you can not wait for the game to finish. Take Madrid as an example, I would rather watch the paint on a wall dry rather than watch their boring style of football. :D but hey that is just me. :P

Sorry for the long reply, but such a long article merits such a long response. Again, I really thank you for taking out the time to write all this. By the way, have you played or coached before?

Impressive analysis Ramzi, never considered the specific example of a case like Man U before.

I agree with most of what FC Barcelona9 said so I wont bother to repeat. I ll only add that when we start both Toure and Busquets we are in effect playing with 2 DMs and it hasn't seemed to make much difference.

On a lighter note, Cronaldo will probably be so busy doing stepovers to fake himself that Alves will have plenty of time to sneak up and steal the ball from him.

But in any case the answer might be simpler with Puyol possibly doing a man-marking job on at least one of Cronaldo, Tevez or Rooney. If the counter against us would be by direct running on one flank or the other its unlikely that 2 DMs will be able to do anything to change that.

As you said though it doesn't change our game too greatly and if it only means that Iniesta not start alongside Xavi in midfield then its a decent enough option for us having been used in the past.

Anonymous: thank u.
FC Barcelona9Thank you for enriching the debate,I agree with you to an extend my feedback is:
1)we can consider Man UTD as an extreme case, and thats the only case I will accept Barcelona to change the tactics dramatically, I will not make as many changes in each and every game it unsettle the team harmony. So may be I want clear enough but the extreme changes are for the extreme cases. There are other teams beside Man UTD who deserve attention so we create some surprises for them rather than becoming predictable.

2) When we use Busquets and yaya together it doesn't mean we are using two DM. Even though it happened in some games when needed domestically, but never in CL group stage.I am not saying pep didn't use it, I recommend that we use it in knock out stages in the away games more often.

3) the level of concentration may be higher in knock out, but also the opponents are stronger, so relatively the tactical challenge is still the same.

4) I was aware that the last game in group stage was special case. thats why I didn't include it in the Goals conceded report with the other conceded goals. So you can see even without the last game, the "unimpressive" defense performance is notable.

5)I never and will never say we have to win regardless of how. In the second part of the article I was clear about it. "Beautiful and smart".

6)If Cruyff kept winning title Nunez would have no way to sack him.

7)I played football, Injury +university(then work)+Being more passionate in coaching made me stop early. But my coaching adventure is going really well.I will also go for my UEFA license courses next summer, wish me luck. And just so you know I dont accept less than attacking attractive performance from my boys, But of course we are not a Barcelona:) so the secret is "Mastering Triangles" as a trap to pressure ball holder, or as a style to go forward. it covers lack of dribbling techniques(a free advice if you have the same problem in your team as we have-but it need high fitness level so RUNNNN!!!!).

Kamikaze Answers are up:) and by the way two defensive midwinters if well positioned can delay the counter, or at least make tactical fouls in the midfield instead of doing it on the edge of the box, something we both hate;)

Best of luck !!

As crazy as this may sound, I wish Pep focuses more on the Premira rather than the the CL. I'm not saying we should bring the B-Team to Lyon, but having the best players fit and fresh for the next Liga game against Atl. Madrid should be a priority. Our 12 point lead has been reduced almost by half in two games. Real Madrid are on fire lately and I don't see them slowing down anytime soon. All it takes is a draw and two losses, one from Real Madrid at the Bernabau, and our title hopes are over (assuming Real Madrid win all their next matches).

If we win the League and the cup it will be considered a successful season. The Champions League will always be tricky. If we progress in it the heavy schedule will takes its toll on the players fitness and it will be increasingly difficult to keep winning games. We might even blow our Cup chances too.
