Barcelona wants to renew Eto'o

Madrid sports tabloid Marca claims that Barcelona wants to renew the contract of Barcelona forward and Cameroonian international Samuel Eto'o (27) (read more here).

Barcelona would already have informed Eto'o about their wish but the player only wants to start talking after the end of the season.

Eto'o, whose current contract expires in the summer of 2010, also wants to stay with Barcelona for a longer period but he hopes to be able to ask a higher salary if Barcelona wins a prize this season.

Last summer, Eto'o could leave Barcelona but no other club was willing to pay Barcelona the asking price of 40 million euro°, nor to pay the player a year salary of 10 million euro.

MORE THAN 10 million euro a YEAR... thats impossible.. he is crazy.. cann't he be comformed with 10?

He deserves every penny of it.

Whatever we pay him, it'll have to be incentive based.

Like 5 million guaranteed and the rest if he scores 30 goals in La Liga, plays 40 total games & we win Champion's league or something like that. I think his current contract is structured like that because I think he makes up to 7.5 or something similar but he only made 5 million last year because the team did poorly.

I do not agree with you HouseMD I think more than 10 is to much.. I say, 8 with incentives... thats more resonable...

What does he make now? Anyone?

Like I said, I believe he has an incentives based contracts that's up to like ~7.5 million. According to that soccer salaries site, he made 5 million euros last year, probably due to not meeting incentive milestones.

Eto'o deserves to be recongised for his commitment and importance to the team. He is the best number 9 in the world by a long way and he should be rewarded for it. When you consider what he has done for the club he deserves every penny and more. You can see the passion on his face and the way he plays. Unlike Robinho he plays for the shirt. If you want the best you have to reward and pay them what the market rate is. I don't want Barca to get in a situation like Madrid when they sold some of their best players to trim wages only to fill the gaps with second rate youth players. Barca must be smarter than this. ETO'O makes Barca shine!

Hang on, there. "Best 9 in the world" is a pretty big statement. I do agree that he is an excellent striker for us, and works very well in our system. It doesn't take a great striker to score goals with Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Henry running around out there. There's lots of space to play in.

I would argue for an incentivized contract that makes him play for pay, so to speak. This season is essentially a contract season for Eto'o, as he will be judged by what he does this year, since any deals to be made with us or other teams will happen over the summer. And he's playing great with something on the line.

But our system also made Eto'o, who was decent at Mallorca, and those white-clad fellows didn't really want him, so he came to us, where he has thrived because of the multiple offensive threats.

Put Eto'o as the lone striker, say in an English-style system, and good luck getting goals out of him.

So both sides should be grateful, the club for his effort, and him for the club making him dazzle.

Which means a deal should be easy, right? Wrong. Until Eto'o goes somewhere else and finds that he can't score as fluently or easily as he does with us, he's going to think that he is indeed the best striker in the world. From that latter "reality" will come his negotiating position.

We'll see how this one goes, but I think we should renew him, because he is an excellent striker for our system.

Kxevin you raise some good points. Eto'o is a power forward who works very hard and supports the team. I agree he is fed very well by the players you have mentioned. Look in the past though and compare his record to Kluivert, Salinas and others. Eto'o will be a Barca great. He has fully deserved an increase in salary and should be at the club for life. Who can you compare him to? Rooney, Drogba, Trez, Adebayor? He is better than all these. Perhaps Torres could be another option for Barca but it is one thing to play in a team as talented as Barca and another to score consistently over a number of years and stand out as Eto'o has done. Incentive based contract may be what motivates Eto'o but he deserves and has earnt the merit of a higher base. Cheers and Merry XMas :-)
