Barcelona wants to renew Eto'o until 2012

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona wants to renew the contract of Barcelona forward and Cameroonian international Samuel Eto'o (27).

Both the club and Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola are delighted with the attitude and the involvement of Eto'o on and off the pitch this season.

Barcelona has already made the first steps to offer the striker an extension of his current contract that expires in 2010 and the negotiations will be started once Barcelona players Xavi and Busquets have signed their renewals.

It is expected that Barcelona will offer Eto'o to sign for another extra two years, until the summer of 2012. Despite already being one of the top-three earners of the Barcelona squad, the Cameroonian player will probably ask for a serious pay rise.

How much does Eto'o receive right now? 8 million?

I think around 7 million.

If he wants more I think we should try to sell him.. I'm a fan of eto'o but it's a bit out of proportion. there are alternatives like benzema, aguero even maybe huntelaar..

4 million Euros per season, 'til 2010, according to all of the information I can find.

I wouldn't let him hold the team hostage. On the other hand, I wouldn't let Aulas hold the team hostage with some insane valuation for Benzema. I know that the 100 million is a fictional number, but that it even came up is crazy.

The team wanted to sell him before the season start, so no one can expect that he would renew before January, which means I cant see and delay neither from his side not from the board considering the situation, beside the extension negotiations with other players.

As I mentioned before, It will be a big mistake if Barcelona offloaded both Henry and Eto'o and started the new season with no guaranteed striker but only with new comers who need time to adapt with a risk they may flop.

This is football (business) nothing come in one night, its the best for Eto'o to extend contract as no other team can offer him guaranteed success as Barcelona plus a good financial conditions, and its for the best for Barcelona to keep a striker who score the highest average of goals and proved being a lethal weapon.

Practical thinking comes over theoretical formulas while building a winning team, so I think if things went as it seems, he will be here next season, may be supported by a new fresh striker.

Keep Eto'o and sell Henry. Give Bojan more of a chance next season and buy a left winger. There is no need to spend a silly amount of money buying a striker like Benzema when we have probably the best striker in the world right now and one that could be turn out to be one of the best in Bojan. From next season he will need to start playing more regularly and that means we cannot buy Benzema without selling Eto'o....would anybody in their right mind make such a decision? I mean Benzema is a fantastic player with a lot of potential but Eto'o is a PROVEN goalscorer. Season after season he has one of the best goal scoring ratios in the world.

I can understand your point Hilal, But two reasons make me consider buying a striker (not necessary a 100M man) is a priority over a winger.
One both Eto'o and bojan are weak in the air, which will be out problem sometimes, even though we were good enough to cover it till now, but i hope it will not be a problem against sevilla for example. We need a young "crespo" to throw him in the field and who can work in the traffic, thats not Eto'O nor Bojan, in the box at least, thats a weakness in our offense set up.

having iniesta, Hleb, Pedro supported by Gudi and kieta in the midfield can do the wing job.

Lets not forget the youth talents coming throw Barca Athletic like Jef and Gai, so i think we have a long term future on the wings. Any new signing there may complicate things more than it may solve, thats added to the fact that away of the propaganda i cant find a stunning wing who worth the effort of signing.

Pst: Even bojan can operate n the wing, time will tell...

Eto currently earns 9million Euro per season, he´s the second best paid player after Messi who earns 11 miilion Euro, what more pay rise does Eto want ?

I can definitely see your point Ramzi and a big, tall, strong striker would definitely give our offense a lot more versatility but would you swap that for Eto'o?? That is the big question. A lot of people wanted to see Adebayour come in for Eto'o this summer and while he is big and strong i can guarantee he does not score as many as our Eto'o!! It would be nice to have a tall, strong backup for Eto'o but who?? Nobody world class is going to come and sit on the bench, maybe Adriano....but he has a lot of baggage. Drogba is always injured these days. You can forget Ibra. Crespo is too old. Our best bet will probably be to take a gamble on some South American talent. Somebody who might be willing to sit on the bench and wait for his chance.

Definitely not for eto'O, But as you mentioned you can always hope to find a young striker with physical attributes who can work as a winning card in the present, and a long term complement for bojan.

The thing is that Barcelona youth rarely produce a striker with the mentioned characteristics, but mostly Bojan brand, technical but short, so we need to keep scouting for what we lack, hoping to be more lucky this time than when we hunted Lopez from Argentina 3 years ago.

I think this summer we will sell Henry and buy Benzema. I feel like Eto'o will remain our first choice number 9 for at least one or two more seasons. In that time Benzema will fill the gap left by Henry and get acclimated to Barca and la liga.
To not buy Benzema this summer would be a huge mistake, but to spend 100 mil euro is also completely out of the question. He is a special player, but not that special.
