A goalkeeper, a left back and a left winger

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain and Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola will meet next week to talk about the squad for the 2009-2010 season.

They will make a general analysis of the renewal negotiations, the positions that should be strengthened and the player's market. Barcelona wants to be ready and have clear ideas when the transfer market will start to move in the spring of 2009.

The idea is that there will only be few transfers, probably two or three, to fill up concrete needs. The club doesn't plan to transfer big star players and unless one of the current key players unexpectedly leaves next summer, Barcelona will invest less than this year.

In principle, Barcelona plans to buy players for three positions: a goalkeeper, a left back defender and a left winger. Barcelona wants to buy a goalkeeper who can compete with Valdés and with Sylvinho most probably leaving and Guardiola having some doubts on Abidal, a new left back seems to be a certainty.

Because neither Henry or Iniesta are natural wingers, Barcelona also wants to sign a
left winger. Valencia left winger and Spanish international David Silva (22), whom Barcelona already tried to sign last summer (read more here), and Arsenal left winger and Dutch international Robin van Persie (25) are seen as the main candidates.

sell jorequa and even pinto if we manage to buy a new keeper.I'd like sergio asenjo, because neuer and adler will be to difficult to get.As for left back I dont mind caceres there otherwise the best would be lahm but i dont think well get him...

I think we'll go for Diego Lopez(villareal) or Sergio Asenjo who has a 6 milion euros buy-out clause in his contract.

I think silva is too similar to iniesta. in fact iniesta is the better player. I would rather have van persie! but he is injuried too much. Gai could be given his chance on the left wing.also pedro and hleb can play at that position.. I think abidal has proven himself this season so a young promosing left back with attacking skills would be okay. like arsenal does with every position! caceres can play as a back up for alves as he is right footed. A goalkeeper is not a priority to me..

I think Valdes has silenced most of his critics this year, havung said that with the greatest respect to jorquera and pinto he knows he is 1st choice, so a talented young keeper to push him would good, Asenjo?
Same for abidal, done good this year but is getting on, really hope the rumours about Bel-Hajj(?) are not true as he is a pure liability. Clichy would be ideal but not very realistic.
as for LW i'd like silva as he is a good player but not sure if he is worth what we will have to pay for him. My first choice would be Ashley Young, he is gonna be World Class very soon also Madrid are interested and we dont want them to have him, trust me.
what happened to aguero/benzema rumours?

Zhirkov and Arshavin would be the best choices !!

Ribery or Aguero for AML, and Neuer or Asenjo for GK!

I'm sorry but Ashley Young will never get anywhere near world class. He is playing for an in form team at the moment, and has played well, but please World Class?

First of all he's English, meaning his touch is nowhere near good enough for a Spanish team, let alone Barça. Second, he is a crossing/traditional winger, not a dribbling/passing/shooting hybrid winged forward that Barça uses. It's getting old, all this hype around these young English players, sure they look good in the EPL when one burst of pace takes you from your own penalty area to the opponents, but in La Liga where skill, build up and link up play are required to maneuver past an actual midfield, Young won't stand half a chance.

A David Silva would be much better suited to that role, however I think Iniesta being right footed on top of his wily, creative style makes him an ideal candidate.

Cheers !! I ll drink to that last comment anony.
Not just are English players terrible but the players who play for long in the English league lose the skill n ability to play elsewhere and especially in La Liga. Hmm.. if we really need a big strong centre-fwd though has anyway considered Roque Santa Cruz ?

I wouldn't mind nosing around Kameni. Espanyol had him on the block last season, and he wasn't all that expensive, as I recall.

I think that EMD is on crack about the Abidal doubts, however. He's been amazing this season. I could see a backup/competitor to make whomever survives even better.

A left winger is a definite need, preferably a floater who can also do that Deco thing.

what about diego from werder bremen? he scores goals, has an excellent touch, and can fill in the left wing or the deco role. he & iniesta could trade off on the left flank but i'd rather see him up higher as i don't think his defensive technique is all that great.

werder is in the middle of the table and probably won't get into the champions league. i think he might end up costing less than silva and he has an italian passport : /?

there's also that guy cesc...

Sergio Asenjo or Guillermo Ochoa for GK, Phillip Lahm or Gael Clichy for LB, Ashley Young or David Silva for AML

In my mind Diego is an excellent static midfielder, he distributes play well and gets on the end of plays nicely. The problem though is that he works best when everyone moves around him, thus he is not very dynamic. For instance Barça wide players such as Iniesta, Messi, Henry, Hleb are supplied the ball out wide near the touchline and expected to try several things, dribble, deliver a cutting pass, cut in and shoot on goal, or continue distributing play. Diego for me doesn't have the one on one dribbling abilities that really give the wide forward spot in our 4-3-3 true meaning. Our wide players don't simply beat their defender and cross, they beat one and keep moving closer and closer to goal, which for me, a fit Iniesta or Hleb cover the widest array of these options.

I admire Diego's ability, however, I don't think he is what we need.
