Abidal is not untouchable

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that, although the player shouldn't leave, Barcelona could consider a transfer when the club receives a good offer for Barcelona left back defender and French international Eric Abidal (28). The defender would not be untouchable for future Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola.

Abidal said last week to journalists that he didn't know what the arrival of a Guardiola would mean for his position but that he wants to stay: "You never know what will happen when a new manager comes in. If the coach doesn't believe in you, it's better to pack your bags and leave. I didn't talk to the new coach yet, I will do that when the season starts. But I plan to continue."

Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain said last week at a press conference that Barcelona has no plans to sell one of the four players who were transferred in the summer of 2007.

Should stay, played a good first part of the season. With a real winger in front of him, he'll make a great left wing.

Couldn't agree more with the comment above! Let's just hope it's NOT Malouda though, teamwork aside. And now's not the time to create an additional vacancy on the team when you still have to fill the vacancies at right back and left wing. Selling Abidal would be foolish because then you have to go out and purchase another left back anyways! You're just going in circles then. And who's a better "available" left back option on the market right now than Abidal? No one in my opinion!

Abidal said it himself last week: he needs more training, besides being a football player his strong point is being an athlete. As months went by and his form decayed, the great Abidal of the beginning disappeared. In good form, one of the top three left backs at present.
