British tabloid The Sunday Mirror claims that Barcelona forward and French international Thierry Henry (30) was two weeks ago on the verge of signing for Manchester United.
The recent winners of the English Premier League and Champions League would be paying Barcelona 12 million euro° for the former Arsenal striker. Future Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola blocked the move when he got appointed as the successor of current Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard (read more here).
A source close to the deal is quoted as saying: "Thierry was told by the new coach he didn't want him to leave, that he was going to be a big player for Barça next season and would have an important role to play for them. That was the reassurance Thierry needed but United were ready to buy him."

I find this report hard to believe. If Henry is as loyal to Arsenal as he repeatedly says he was, I couldn't see him playing for another team in England let alone Man U. And even though Man U could use an additional striker up front I'm a bit surprised they would consider Henry and not someone younger for that position. Someone they could potentialy groom for the future. Perhaps, if the report is indeed true Man U may had hoped that Henry could have fit in the club much like Larsson did a couple of years ago - as an experienced veteran off the bench. But at that point Larsson had pretty much resigned himself to being a "role" player; while I don't see Henry ready or willing to assume that type of position yet.
As I Man U fan, I think SAF is very shrewd on this. He is waiting for Benzema next year or two. He knows Henry wants CL so badly and can do a big revenge to his old foel Wenger.
henry just needs his nike mercurial vapor shoes to be the best again
