Asked about the renewal of his contract that expires in 2010 (read more here), Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés (27) has said at a press conference that he doesn't know what the intention of the club is:
"There has been some talking about my renewal but I hear these things through the media. Until now, nobody from the club has contacted me.
I've said before that I will have to assess my future and that the club know what they should do. I will leave it there. I only know that I have a contract until 2010 and that I'm a professional. I owe my club a lot and I've always been very proud to play at Barça. The only thing I can do is to keep on working with my team-mates like I've always done."
Catalan sports paper Sport meanwhile claims that Barcelona plans to buy Real Valladolid goalkeeper and Spanish youth international Sergio Asenjo (19) if the renewal talks with Valdés wouldn't lead to an agreement between the two parties. In that case, Asenjo would be loaned back to Valladolid until the summer of 2010.

I wish the media would calm down on the renewal/next season talk until the summer.
It unsettles the players to have to assess their futures in every press conference.
Win now. Let's worry about the future in....the future.
Hahah I find it funny how Valdes is trying to start the negotations himself. He has not heard anything from Tixi he says. Well after the howlers he's been giving up it's time for a world class keeper. He is no where near the likes of Cassilas, Pepe Reina, Buffon, Cech or Julio Cesar. Big clubs have national team goalies with all sorts of experience. Get rid of this home town experiement Tixi!
don't get your hopes up
you havn't heard from the club cuz there is'nt a renewal offer .
and he sez that he doesn't care about the critics .
for your information v.v , criticesm has a point , and the point is : you better get back to your best soon or you'll get the BOOT
i guess we shud think deep as to whether we shud renew VV's contract... he doesn't loook comfortable n i think tat th talks from the media unsettling the player is a lame reason for VV's recent bad performance... i think the priority for the transfer window must be to sign a LB n 2 keepers-both 1st choice keeper and Asenjo...
Radamus//
His name is Txiki...
In any case we are likely to get rid of one of Pinto/Jorquera. So if we do buy Asenjo why should we loan him out.
Thats like saying we think VV is a great GK but we don't want to pay him so much. What is the need for such ambiguity? He has been consistently making errors over the years and we need someone to challenge him for the first team spot.
Asenjo is cheap. We should buy him and keep him and if it were up to me, I would prefer him to VV. If the problem is lack of confidence in Asenjo then buy a GK we can trust. Its bad enough that Valdes keeps screwing up but its worse that we never provide him with any motivation to improve or fear his first team spot.
Why dont we get REINA from liverpool? he is World Class or 10x better than Valdes and he is worth 15 m maybe... Valdes is good but we need the best who make mistakes once in the league, not in every 2nd match?! Akinfeev is also there but he is young and unproven, I see only Cesar from Inter but he will be impossible to sing so Reina should be our target and Asenjo as a sub! visca el barca !!!
I want to say two things -
Valdes is not going anywhere.
In worth case he will be a 2:nd gk.
Asenjo is not cheap (a big talent that United and Juve looks after can not be so cheap)
Asenjo's buyout is 5.5 mill.
Reina already played at Barca. Initially he was not much better than VV. Horrible at collecting crosses and I remember him letting in a Roberto Carlos freekick that came straight at him in a Classico in the Bernabou.
Get rid of Valdés...sell him and promote Ruben Mino :o
Everybody allways beats on Valdes. They want someone like Buffon. Fair enough, but keep in mind there are but a few "Top Notch" GKs in the world. About 5 Id say and granted, Valdes is not one of them.
Still, Im not sure we will be able to sign someone like Buffon. If we want a world class keeper, we have to educate one. Asenjo comes to mind. But remember this, he is not a complete gk, he is not a star gk.
Whatever we do, id prefere we keep valdes untill 2010 and buy a 2nd gk with potential that can challenge him. The problem is, unless we renew with Valdes this summer, we cant sell him. Thats not a good thing!
A tricky one, indeed!
Its either renew with Valdes, or sell. And if we sell, what do we buy? Some ~20 years old "potential"? No thanks! Id rather not have an unproven gk guarding the Barca goal next season. That would be like selling Messi, Etoo and Henry only to let Hleb/Bojan/Jeffren run the top 3. Not gonna happen :S
That was not Reina, that was Arnau that let in the R.Carlos FK. But yeah, Reina was very bad also...
Reina 10X better than Valdés???
Julio Cesar world class keeper?
You guys are blind. VV's f'd up a lot over the years, yes, but he's saved our asses every eyar too. If it weren't for him, we'd lose the CL final against Arsenal, not friggin Ronnie, Deco, or whoever. Stop bashing and start supporting. If not, go support Chelsea so you can slimeball Petr Cech.
People sometimes have to accept the fact that VV is an average keeper.
Yes he made crucial saves, all average keepers do. And all good keepers sometimes make mistakes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I hate him, just like our goalie coach said, VV need someone to compete so he can stays on his top-form. Fact is fact, u can compare his technic, ball handling and all that with other good goalie than u can tell.. Valdes, please stay focus and work hard for the sake of us, your team-mates.. and all the blaugranas.
@AJ...
its not tat VV saved our asses... those are some saves which are to be done by any keeper... Very very few saves done by VV are remembered by us... but everyone remembers the blunders he has done over the few months n years... anyone wants to know who all are the top GK presently in the world??? here's a small list... the ones that are gettable..
1.Diego Lopez-Villareal,age-27(guys... he's 6f 5'... wat more needed? and he's very reliable...)
2.Ben Foster-Man U,age-25(noone can argue tat Foster is not gud... he just had a string of injuries... tats why he's 3rd choice in Man U but he's world class)
3.Reina-Liverpool,age-26(although he was bad once, he's gud now n tats wat we want... i guess VV wouldn't have got anywhere near both the saves Reina made agnst Real- the defender's deflection and Robben's shot)
4.Frey-Fiorentina,age-29 (time and time again, he's made Raymond Domenech realise he's a fool who had forced Frey into retirement. top class goalkeeper)
5.Manuel Neuer-Schalke 04,age-22 (again, a gr8 GK who's got gr8 potential)
6. Lloris-Nice,age-22(i am not sure about him but he has done a gr8 job with Nice)
so, there you go... lets hunt down someone n tell VV to be 2nd choice n show his quality...
Wasn't it Lloris who just played against us for LYON ?
oh ya... totally forgot tat he moved to Lyon... :)i still thought tat Coupet was in Lyon :) now i remember his poor night of picking the ball 6 times agnst us :) forget Lloris... :) this is jus his 1st year... think about the others... and also about Marseille's Steve Mandanda??? young and upcoming...
Lloris moved to Lyon at the start of this season, i think. So i doubt if played against Barca before. I kind of liked his performance against us on Tuesday, seemed very confident. Made an incredible save of the Alves deflected shot, collected crosses well whenever he could, a very assured performance all in all with no hint of indecision or eccentricity.
Kami.... i was telling about Coupet who played agnst us in tat 6-1 thrashing of Athletico... and ya... Lloris was gud agnst us... but since this is his 1st yr, it would be tough to get him...
