Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona also wants to close the contract renewals of Barcelona players Xavi and Busquets as soon as possible because the club then can start working on other cases, like the renewal of Barcelona central defender and Spanish international Carles Puyol (30) (read more here).
The renewal of Barcelona captain Puyol will be negotiated during the coming months and a deal should be found before this season ends. The current contract of Puyol expires in the summer of 2010.
Catalan sports weekly paper Gol claims that the club plans to start talking with Puyol soon and to offer the Catalan defender a contract until 2012 based on the existing deal. With offers from the Italian league, Puyol knows this will be his last big contract and would want to receive a serious pay rise, as a recognition for his career at the club.

our captain needs to stay and retire here...
but he is on the wrong side of the 30 now so he might need to accept a paycut. He has 2-3 years of starting 11 left in him.
I forgot to add...I always considered him our "suicide kid"...the guy that doesn't bother to get hit and hurt...100% effort all the time.
Puyol is one of the greatest players in Barcelona and Spanish history ... This is the Spanish Maldini and I see him playing until 36 or 37 at least ! Visca el Barca Visca Puyi :)
I can't imagine Barca without him...
really nico ???
The beasts skills are on the decline.. He is a very tenacious tackler and a good one at that ....his recovery speed is frightening.. I remember the champions league final against arsenal.. henry just raped him on the touch line... puyol was on the floor.. and henry takes off full speed.. he slows down a little to take a shot and .....BAM!!! there comes puyol sliding in like a crazy man to block the shot from henry...probably saved a goal... I think this sums him up best ...sliding in like a crazy man.. The person who compared him to maldini is dead wrong.!!!! He will not be palying till he is 36 or 37.. his time is very near up.. He never read the game like maldini. he is always reacting to situations.. never seems to be ahead of the game. which is why when his speed deserts him and his body ages. he will not be very good anymore. His strength and tenacity and sharp tackling ability made him an excellent defender in his prime..but.. when you get old you need to play with your head.... puyol only knows how to play with his heart... it will be sad watching him struggle in about 3 years time.. we should give him this last renewal because he is still a good defender..and out of respect for pouring his heart and soul into barca football. but thats it..
