CSKA Moscow left winger Zhirkov offered

Madrid sports tabloid Marca claims that CSKA Moscow left winger and Russian international Yuri Zhirkov (25) has recently been offered to Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain.

While Begiristain doesn't want to exclude the option and has asked time to decide, Barcelona president Joan Laporta and some staff members have welcomed the idea.

The left back position is one of the positions for which Begiristain is searching the market in order to strenghten it next season. Zhirkov is in that perspective one of best options. The Russian left back could replace Abidal and Sylvinho from next summer on.

Besides the interest of several other European top clubs, the main obstacle for a transfer seems to be the position of CSKA Moscow, that doesn't have the need to sell players. It would therefore be Zhirkov who has to put pressure on his club. After five seasons at CSKA, the left back would be willing to move abroad.

We should keep this option open. Seems like a good fit. A daring left winger who is also strong and can track back and throw some hard tackles. Could be a good backup option for left back and left wing. I wonder how much we could get him for.

It would be perfect if Sylvinho left. I don't think he should replace Abidal, cuz Abidal is really good right now, but having two great left backs would be fantastic.

No he wouldn't replace Abidal. He's more of a winger than a left back. I don't think we would really want two all out attacking fullbacks. We need vertical balance on the pitch. I think he's a good replacement on the left wing. Occasionally he can back up Abidal as well. His versatility suits us.

i haven't seen him play a lot. I have some doubts in the defensive compartment but i think he is a good player. for the left back that is. he certainly is not a winger like robben or v persie!

Too good to be true (Marca). I'd like to see him playing for Barca. He was one of the best Russia's player at EC. They'll ask something about 20M and I think he will be very good buying. He can play left full-back and left wing. Better option than v.Persie. Go for him!

...I choose Zhirkov and Capel for future left wingers at Barca.

Zhirkov is great and all, but we really should be thinking more about a backup for Alves.

I agree with James. I'd rather have a left back who's a little more defensive. Like Abidal.

Zhirkov not only he can play both wing and back, he can defend and attack, he is strong, fast and very agile, and his passing are no less impressive!
If we can buy him, and for 20m or less, Guardiola should not hesistate.
I regard him the best LB in the world let alone the best Russian player.

thanks for finding this piece just one day after i suggested this should be the guy Barca should buy to cover the left-back position. He' d fit in with Barca's game perfectly, is very comfortable with the ball, tireless as Alves, great crosser of the ball and a good defender too. The complete package as far as a left-back is concerned. He 'd give us the option of crosses from the left-flank while still keeping that side secure.

For a leftback position? I doubt it, as he's a left winger like v Persie and Robben: fast, has great vision, technique and passing ability. He's more of an attacking minded player (playmaker) and has only played leftback in Euro 2008. Therefore if we put his as a leftback, which is not his natural position, we won't get his best qualities, and there's a difference in playing in your unnatural position a couple of games or the whole season...
So unless he's in for a left wing position, it's not gonna work.
Get him for left wing? I suggest go after v. Persie; he's more talented

Versatility is an important element in any team. Zhirkov is capable enough as a left-back to cover for Abidal while the difference in his style and approach may prove useful. He would provide us an option both as an attacker and as a defender. Russian Player of the Year 2008
