Since the season 1997-1998 the Liga is played with 20 teams and a three-points-for-a-win sytem. Barcelona's record number so far was 46 (2005-2006). The absolute record was 47 (Real Madrid, 2007-2008).
Not even when 22 teams played in the Liga (and the first round had by consequence two games more), no team achieved 50 points. Atlético Madrid (1995-1996) and Real Madrid (1996-1997) both got 49 points in that three-points system.
Pep, there's reactions from all the players on the official Barca-site, don't know if people check that one.
Furthermore could be mentioned that the record number of points after a full La Liga season is 92 points, currently held by Real Madrid for their 1996/97 season.
That is only 43 points from 57 available to break the record, quite reachable if we avoid any serious injuries.
50.. a good number for the day! btw guys, read this: http://www.goal.com/en-india/news/138/spain/2009/01/18/1066379/spanish-debate-the-politics-of-football-in-spain didnt we read the same thing in Ramzi's article just before the el clasico? this article has the same thing, some of it verbatim imo... ramzi should sue Goal.com
The article before El Classico was more of a pass-on-the-story from various homepages with FC Barcelona history, as correctly cited by Ramzi.
There might be parts of the Goal.com article that has been stolen from some of those sites, thereby giving the same verbatism as the article on our site.
If it is the case though, we should only be proud of the quality of this blog. ;)
