Messi has no plans to leave Barcelona

British tabloid The Daily Mail claims that Barcelona right wing attacker and Argentinian international Lionel Messi (21) is one of the targets of Manchester City.

The English Premier League club hopes to tempt AC Milan player Kaká with the promise that he will be just the first star player who will end up at Manchester City, that could spend big on a list of transfer targets that includes Messi.

Asked if he would consider an offer by Manchester City, Messi said yesterday to journalists that he has no plans to leave Barcelona: "I want to stay here for the rest of my life. I hope it will be this way."

Asked about the rumour that Barcelona wants to offer Messi another contract renewal (read more here), Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain said yesterday to journalists that they will look at the issue at the end of the season:

"We didn't yet thought about renewing Messi. Those things are talked about at the end of the season. By that time, we'll look at the situation of the player and we'll talk but at this moment we didn't yet consider it. Leo is happy here and we don't think he's planning to leave. He feels good, he scores, and when he does he points at the logo... We're not worried about bids from Manchester City for our players because they are untouchable."

Messi's situation is a lot different than other superstars like Kaka and Ronaldo. Messi was raised by Barca and it was Barca who brought him to Spain and gave him the taste of professional football. He loves Barca, his teammates love him, the board loves him, the Camp Nou crowds love him. See the bonds guys? there is nothing to worry about. Both parties are never ready to part ways.

Better safe than sorry. I d rather they increase his buy-out clause in the summer. Remember a back-stabber 9 years ago ?

to the anonymous person in the second comment, I distinctly remember Ronaldinho saying on multiple occasions, when still at Barça and in his prime, that he wanted to remain here for the rest of his career.

I hope Messi stays until retirement, with all my heart, but I won't rule out the possibility that he someday moves to a different club. He's so young and already the best in the world. He might want a new challenge 5 years from now, you never know.

Secondly, you never know how bad a future board can fuck things up. I obviously hope it won't happen, but with a system like we have in Barcelona, it is always possible that a new board screws things up and gets players angry. Barça have a history of screwing up relationships with star players.

Well Kaka was brought to Europe by Milan, given his first taste of professional football. He loves Milan, his teammates love him, don't know about the board but the fans certainly love him.

We live in a world where "cash is king". Everyone and everything can be bought. We can never exclude an situation where the finances are extremely worrying and we get a 150M E offer for Messi.

I wonder if Messi was to go thru a period of bad form as Ronnie did would the fans support him or how they are famously known would they turn they're back on him and whistle and boo him how the tasteless fan's have done in the past to other player's?!

At the end of the day money make's the world go round every one has a price sad but that's the world we live in..

JUDAS Figo! Kamakazi. As Messi came through the ranks and in some ways is a part of the club at Barca I hope / don't think he would do a Figo. He seems grateful to the club for changing his life in Argentina and turning him into a Super Star. The same could be said of R10 but again he didn't come through the ranks and he has a different personality to Messi.

Thats Messis wish..and he logo kissing thing, please dnt go there. It means NADA!!
But I hope we keep him for another 6years.. I wouldnt mind him leaving then. Players like Messi dont reamin in top form for ever. People like Kaka, Xavi, Cesc can cos of their role. they can play at form till 33. Messi is very xplosive, just look at Maradona, Rivaldo, R10, the form would always drop BIG TIME at some stage.. So I would be glad if he gives us another 6-7 years and leave on happy terms and not he sour way we end our relationship with "star players"...And b4 I get slated, I love MESSI..dnt get it twisted..HEs the BEST RIGHT NOW!!

To SimonP,

Its true Milan brought Kaka to Europe. Well, he was already 21 years old then. He already made his name with Sao Paolo before he went to Milan.

For Messi the whole thing is different. If not because of Barca, maybe he would be shorter than he is now. I think you know why :)

I would rather compare Messi's bond with Barca to Giggs' bond with Man Utd. Giggs did refuse a mega deal with Inter right?

Like Aussie Barca Fan said, Messi is grateful to Barca, and it is really easy to understand.

And my final say, do Kaka ever say that he want to go to City willingly? Furthermore, the Kaka deal is not done yet. So we have no reason to be pessimistic in protecting our Messi. :)

There are officials such as the Sporting Director in the club to ensure that players staying or leaving is not something that depends purely on sentiment. Messi may or may not want to leave Barca but nevertheless such inclinations should be put down on paper while they are still favorable. Sentiment is fickle and Barca as a club has seen in the recent past too many of its heroes leave after initially proclaiming they love the club and would like to stay with it forever. Why should we be subject to the same problem over and over again simply due to laziness, inaction or misunderstood notions of fidelity.
