Eto'o postpones renewal negotiations

Asked about a possible renewal of his contract that expires in 2010, Barcelona forward and Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o (27) has said at a press conference that this is not the time to talk about this issue:

"The problem is that it's still too early to talk about this. We have to wait until everything has finished, in a good way, and afterwards we'll talk about it. The Liga is not even half-way and now we don't need new things that will make us lose focus. When the time is there to talk about this, we will do that. At this moment, I want to think about the training sessions and the games.

I want to thank my team-mates because they helped me to stay at Barcelona last summer. They know me and they believed that I could be helpful this season. Experience has shown us that every player who suffers an injury needs a certain time to return but this is Barça, the best club in the world, and they always should look for the best.
If they thought at a certain moment that they couldn't wait longer before I found my best form again, I understand that because Barcelona isn't a club who can afford it to lose time. So I've turned the page and I don't hold anything against anyone."

Very Diplomatic, But little tricky.
Again, who blame him?

i think he should be careful. He is better of signing a deal as early as possible. He is certainly walking a tight-rope with all the transfer speculation surrounding Benzema and Villa. I think he figures that if Barca wins the treble he will get a good deal even if he is forced to leave. I certainly want him to stay.

I don’t know what to think about this; I smell disaster..

… no matter barca outcome this season.

It is a little concern that he wants to postpone until the end of the season. The situation wasn't handled well last summer and he may still be a little uneasy and perhaps less forgiving. If his team mates stood by him last summer, I would expect him to do the same for them if they ask him to stay at the end of the season. I just hope this doesn't end up being a Robinho situation all over again.

Love Samu's statement. Just focus on this season. Hopefully if we win a lot this season he'll get a huge package deal. However if he holds us for ransom or anything, he should remember no one is bigger than the club and he can f*** off =)

But it'd be nice to keep a hold on one of the best strikers in the world though.

disaster? hardly.

if we do well, he'll re-sign. he's waiting for just that possibility to drive up his wages a bit.

worst case scenario, we do well and he wants a huge contract. we can't agree on the terms with sammy and he nets us a huge sum of cash. we should be able to find a classy striker with the whole summer period, especially if we're successful this campaign.

I think he wants to put a little more pressure on the club. for every goal he makes until the end of the season he can claim more money. its tactic

i think u guys are right. He wants to really prove himself all over again and still put himself in the show glass, just in case..
and on the other hand, it makes sense to wait till then end of the season before we do this.
My reason: If we open talks and Eto realises Barca dont "value" him as he would expect, that might cause rift btw him and the club, hence affect his morale and performances and this can easily disrupt the harmony, high team spirit and everything we ve done so far. Its gonna be a "make or break" negotiation. If its a "make", then we wld be happy we did it now, if it turned out to be a break (divorce), we wld blame the club for doing it in btw the season knowing this is a very delicate issue, we all know what happened during summer.

the same concerns didn't seem to affect the Xavi and Busquets renewals. i.e the question of a "make or break" never arose. This thing smells. Eto'o n the board seem to be trying to outwit each other n that might override the goodwill which is an important element of these negotiations.
