Barcelona looking again at Lahm option

Madrid sports tabloid Marca unconfirmedly claims that Barcelona is again interested in Bayern Munich full back defender and German international Philipp Lahm (25) (read more here).

With the probable exit of Sylvinho and the possible exit of Abidal, Barcelona is searching the market wanting to sign a new left back defender next summer.

Lahm would be one of the first names that has been discussed and because of his skills and experience, the German defender would be the first choice of Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola. The asking price for Lahm, who renewed his contract with Bayern last year until 2012, could be around 15 million euro°.

pep, did Marca phrase it like this or did you "With the probable exit of Sylvinho and the possible exit of Abidal, Barcelona is searching the market wanting to sign a new left back defender next summer." ? because I didn't know Abidal might be leaving. If its Marca i ll take it with a pinch of salt.

he would be a great singing. the only thing that worries me is that he is way too short. he is also right footed so it would be harder for him to supply a lot of crosses. i rather have patrice evra even though he is also short, cause he is extremely fast which is something the barca defence needs

They apparently did it, kamikaze. Referring to the rumours about Abidal returning to lyon.

Signing Lahm to play opposite Alves wouldn't make sense from a schematic point of view because Lahm is a very offensive player. We need someone on the left wing who plays more defensive in order to compensate for what Alves does on the right flank. With two attacking fullbacks, we'd be leaving ourselves very exposed at the back. Many believe Lahm is better suited for the right because of his foot preference.

I think this is just a case of Marca throwing out a big name for Barca.

Just imagine this:

One year from the elections, current barcelona board signing a player for more than Double the amount of money they were able to pay and get him few months ago before he renewed his contract.

Before it was also 10-15 million, Ramzi, so it wouldn't be the double. And elections have nothing to do with this, i think. Board members won't be affected by that, if the staff wants this, they can only try to execute that. 15 million for a German international doesn't really seem overpriced either.

And whatever he costs, everything always depend on the performances. Alves also looked like he was overpaid but now he starts to show that he was worth the money.

oh man, yesterday i thought about that case and i was sooooo happy that the case was closed because he is tooooooooooooooooooo small. soccer is not only played on the ground. as a defender you should also play with your head especially on corners and freekicks.

pep, a quote of the day for u
sylvinho : "We all have our value and the players just accept the roles the coach gives us. And if that’s bringing results, so much the better"

It's not sparky enough to be 'quote of the day', kamikaze. We have heard this kind of statements from almost every player. Keep looking! In the meantime, I already have a "picture of the day"... :)

There is a good point in that fcbee, regarding his price tag.

May be I wanted to find a reason to decline this rumor, now you wana make me worry more about it...

I would like them to get Bale from Tottenham!! He is very young! But Lahm is also great!

With Lahm there is the advantage of him providing cover for both flanks so we can look at it as signing 2 players rather than 1. Also is solid in defense and very judicious while going forward. I m still stuck on Zhirkov though.

You just don't see him fit the 4-men-defense turning into a 3-men-defense when Alves goes up, Ramzi. And I can agree with that.

Personally I don't really like Lahm (he defended so poorly in the Euro final, that goal of Torres was 100% his fault, well 99% his and 1% of that awful Lehmann), but we must admit that if Sylvinho leaves he could be both a different type of player we could use on the left (keeping Abidal as the more defending option) and that he could be a skilled back-up for Alves on the right.

So I'm in doubt.

yes! perfect, and while were on like this lets sell yaya and grab lampard that way we only have a 2 man back.

anyway i hope we stay away from lahm, he's good at one thing and it just wont fit with our system. asking him to stay back would be stupid when we could get someone who's better at defending for less money. why pay for all that attacking talent/reputation if were not gona use it?

we should really get gareth bale because he is young and also talented guy both in attack and defence. also he is good free kick taker.

I don't see what everyone has against a left-back who can contribute in attack. Playing with a 3-man defense against a solitary striker is a total waste of manpower. Other teams have wing-backs too and on BOTH flanks. The lack of support on the left flank is very evident and cuts out options for players like Henry and Iniesta. Either they have to take the defender on and beat him only on the outside or they have to give up the ball n pass it all the way back through the defense until it lands up on the right side. They cant even move inside to take a shot on goal because the defender with no one else to worry about follows them thus teaming up and crowding. If we dont use the left-back option it is a total waste having a right footed player on the left flank as the dual option is taken away. In that case we might as well spend on some expensive left winger like Silva to replace Henry and Iniesta. Thats silly we need a left-back who can attack !!

Did you know that Gareth Bale has played 20 games for Tottenham and never won a single one?

I don't understand the hype around him, highly overrated - just because he's good and promising in whatever manager game you're playing, doesn't make him good in real life.

I personally like Lahm, i think he's hard working and would fit in no problem, there would always be a spot in the squad for him, and it would save puyol from having to play on the right side when we are short, i would never say no to having a player like him come to the camp!

Guys Lahm could be a very good opition for us. The fact he can play on both wings gives us allot of flexibility. My concern is who do we have for cover if Alves gets injured?? Puyol isn't getting any younger and I don't think we have a quality RB coming through the youth, but I am happy to be corrected on this. I think we need cover on both flanks. Our midfield and attack is well covered but the defence along with a GK to provide 'real' competition to Valdes is a real concern. Rafihna could be an option as cover Alves also.

the best option for Barca in my opinion. this guy is just about as good as there is in the market. his size is not a problem because he is a superb football player. his abilities more than make up for his stature. He might be like another Alves and i dont see the problem with that. Alves is amazing and like Lahm he doesnt igonore his main duty, which is deffence. Lahm is also far better at crossing when attacking than abidal. in fact abidal has no offensive skills, he just seems like a turd when he moves forward.

Abidals size counts for nothing if he cant play deffence... *see the second goal against Barca vs Osasuna!(and many more before that one)

This would be a great transfer as a replacement for Sylvinho. He alternate between right back / left back but he shouldn't really play at the same time as Alves. Would totally mess up our defensive.
