Xavi and Barcelona still not agreeing on salary

Madrid sports tabloid Marca claims that Barcelona attacking midfielder and Spanish international Xavi (28) has rejected a new and better renewal proposal last week.

Barcelona offers Xavi, whose contract expires in 2010 and who currently earns 4 million euro a year, a new four-year deal and the club would have raised their initial salary offer of 5 million euro year a year to 7 million euro plus incentives for trophies won, games played and Champions League qualification.

After five meetings, a deal nevertheless wouldn't be near yet, with Xavi wanting to become the second best paid player of the squad, together with Eto'o, and therefore asking 9 million euro a year (read more
here). A new meeting between the two parties would be scheduled for this week.

Asked about the renewal negotiations, Barcelona president Joan Laporta said last week to journalists that things are looking good: "The talks are going in the right direction and we will do everything that is needed to keep him. He's a key player for us because besides being a great player, he's also an example for the youth players. But I don't want to say more about it because it's Txiki Begiristan who is dealing with the contract renewals. He's responsible for these issues and he's holding the talks trying to renew the contracts."

Spanish news site El Confidencial claims that Italian clubs Juventus and Inter Milan would want to sign Xavi next summer, while English Premier League teams Manchester United and Chelsea would also be ready to enter the race for the Catalan midfielder if he would be put for sale.

7 is fair...9 is overpaying.

I love Xavi as much as any cule but its a business decision and I understand why Barca doesn't want to pay him that much...

how many players in the world do make 9 mio? a handfull? or even less I guess.

pay him what he wants we cant afford to lose such a world class player like xavi

He wants Ronaldinho/Messi/Henry money. No way can that happen. He may be an influential player, but in terms of global marketing, he's a non-factor. Even 7 million is too much. He's worth 7 now, but in 3-4 years he certainly won't be. 9 million would be a disaster. The club has to stand its ground here.

I have a feeling it's more his agent than Xavi himself. Now that the club has raised the offer he's feeling bold to demand more.

ooooo xavi xavi .... this is a tad much.. I wouldnt pay you more than 5-6 even though you are my favorite.... can help but think that the board fucked this one up.... as soon as he walked off the plane from the euros they should have offered him the 5 and he would have taken it.. THink about it.. contract up in two years.. and you just get recognized as the best player in a major international tournament....it s pretty obvious you would want two things... 1)a raise... especially if you are only earning 2-3 million and lesser players are earning 2-3 times that. 2) an extension at the club you love sooooo much and have been at since you were 11....

So as a negotiatior you want the upper hand so you GO PUBLIC and say .. OH XAVI YOU ARE THE GREATEST SOO GREAT THAT WE ARE OFFERING YOU A NEW SALARY WITH DOUBLE THE WAGES... THATS RIGHT WE LOVE YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH WE DOUBLED YOUR SALALRY ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SIGHN :).. by doing this you force the player into a quick agreement ( or relatively quick their would still be some negotiation) but it keeps the priced down because public perception would be that the club was finally doing right by xavi and paying him good money and xavi would look like a blood sucking mercenary if he turned it down and asked for more... whcih of course he wouldnt have wanted...but now that we have waited so long the situation is reversed and the club is the one that looks bad for not paying him.. I am not saying that my way is the best way.. but it certainly sounds better than this long drawn out negotiating that the club always gets into

i agree with marc but im sure barcelona have a plan for him they always do just have faith :P

I think the club should put down their foot here. 7 million or we sell you next summer.

A other option would be the higher salary but with a shorter contract. Giving him an "A" salary for 5 seasons would be crazy.

Sure he's good but if he wants to be such greedy we could get a replacement for next season.

The simplistic view of this is:

Sell Henry, use the money saved from his salary to pay Xavi.

Use the rest to sign a real left winger, but a young promise.

If things were only this simple...

In hindsight, everything is 20/20, Marc.

While the board may have been prescient had it begun negotiations with Xavi during the summer, they had a number of other pressing concerns on their mind. Such as integrating new players and a new coach, trying to sell Ronnie and Sammy, and dealing with the turmoil surrounding Laporta's potential departure.

I think the board can be forgiven for having focused on other things during the summer...

sell him and buy cesc. for half that salary

7 million euros a year. For doing what he loves, play football. A lot of people bust their backs working a shit job and receives 1% or less of what the club is offering Xavi. Wanting 2 million more is simply ridiculous! What does he need all that money for?

I love Xavi as a player, but this is getting idiotic.

if you complain about xavi wanting that money you should complain even more about the players who get more than him. xavi is simply the most important player for barca. give him the respect he deserves, damnit!

Give him 8. That should do it.
