Principal agreement on Xavi renewal

Madrid sports tabloid Marca claims that there's a principal agreement on the renewal of Barcelona attacking midfielder and Spanish international Xavi (28), whose current contract expires in the summer of 2010. A deal could be signed on Monday (read more here).

Barcelona and the player would have reached an agreement on almost all points, including the salary. Xavi would get a pay rise but wouldn't earn as much as players like Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o or Thierry Henry.

One of the details that should still be sorted out is the duration of the contract. The new contract will expire in 2013 or 2014. Catalan radio station Ona FM claims that Barcelona has offered the Catalan midfielder to renew until 2013, while Xavi asks a contract until 2014.

Catalan sports paper Sport confirms that there's a new meeting scheduled in the Camp Nou on Monday. Both parties are having a positive atitude and would want to bring their positions closer in order to close a deal soon.

Oh i really hope this is true, would hate to see the two sides part because of a money disagreement. This whole episode has risen the debate about the appreciation of players coming from the Barca youth academy.

Xavi is the type of player deserving to be in the top tier, a player that has proven his loyalty and skills over and over again. He is the type of player which is often overseen when it comes to higher salaries as he, until lately, hasn't been the one scoring the goals. He's the backbone of the team and it is truly shown in the matches where he isn't playing.

So Barca.. Get a move on an give this top player what he deserves instead of exploiting his loyalty! And most of all, renew him so i can use my shirt with his name on for many years to come ;)

Yes, in these time of economic crisis, the players should be sensible for the shirt issue!!! So Xavi and Eto'o should just sty!

Since Xavi conceded on the salary a little. The club should offer him till 2014. Come on, even if you pay him the last year to be a mentor/coach like Sylvinho it's worth it. Plus Xavi is the type of player that might play until he's 34, his technique is not going to go away. I'm rooting for Xavi on this one.
