A game of Total football for a team with killing instinct, that’s the briefing for the game in my books!
Very balanced start up, the Defense we asked for, names and structure, Busquets was the wall as a defensive midfield, and the midfield/offense was a piece of art, why do I combine the midfield with offense? Because that’s how it was for real!
Without Eto’o! Nice one Guardiola!
On papers we started with Xavi and Gudi in midfield, with Hleb on the right, Messi as a striker, and Henry on the left, but how true was that? Switching positions was the tempo of the whole symphony, Gudi tipped his physical presence in the midfield, Xavi orchestrated the show, Hleb bounced back as a third midfielder and enriched ball distribution, Henry was the horse of the race running every where, while Messi was a Messi once again.
Sporting? The predicted start up aside of Ismailov injury but…either the tactics were of a genius so I didn’t understand it, or there were no tactics to be mentioned, May be it was just me but I had no clue what they were trying to do. Paulo Bento, sporting coach, watch Opera may be, or Dr. Phill, but for sure not La Liga, and specially not the game of Barcelona against Getafe, Neither he prepared his team mentally for the game so they were like Rabbets facing the Wolves, nor he made an attempt to complicate things, he made it easy for Barcelona in a day where Barcelona was in the mood, and you know how it goes when the guys are REALLY in the mood!
Goals Conceded, The first one was an unfair call on Marquez, absolutely no handball there and we ended up with a yellow card and a goal. The second was a Marquez-Caceres mistake, But mainly Marquez.
But also, and I know you may not like it guys, our Messi goal, that was brilliant, give me the doubt that the ball was moving when Alves passed it to messi, so there are some questions about this detail, but I need to watch it again.
Valdes had a relatively calm night compared to worst scenarios expected before the game, the first goal was a tricky free kick – as predicted, the second goal was not his fault by any means – and please don’t disappoint me and say it was – though all opinions are respected here. What a reflex, saving that ball in the second half!
Caceres was really impressive! I can note that he will improve his passing and positioning with time, but the guy showed why Barcelona paid lot of cash to get him, for his young age and relatively little experience he is really a player to count on for the long term.
Marquez was the experience in Defense, it wasn’t one of his best shows, and he is the most responsible for the goal conceded, but his presence created balance and organized the backbones of the team.
Pique played a good game, covered Alves when the Brazilian moved forward, and it was a confident display in general, just some more focus.
Alves: A very balanced yet explosive performance mainly regarding his contribution offensively, Little by little he is showing the Sevilla Alves whom I wish to see against sevilla.
Busquets: I can guarantee that Moutinho will definitely have a Busquets nightmare when he sleep after the game, if he slept, the Athletic Barcelona product (Barcelona B then) Scanned the midfield back and forth for any hunts through out the game, and in so many ways I consider him the man of the match, but that’s only me.
Xavi: the immortal maestro, holding the game strings between his fingers he knew what and when and how, not a stunning show and we missed his goals, but if you don’t notice how important his presence is, wait till he is not there.
Gudjohnsen: one thing in common between this guy and keita, they know how to position themselves defensively in a way that prevent the opponents to move the ball from their side, so as I mentioned in a previous Article, they may not be seen as often, but you just can feel their impact. I think he had to go more into the box than he did, but generally was satisfying, and he tried to pass the ball as often as he can to Bojan in the box, a very decent sign.
Hleb: He is gradually coming back, I can expect some complains about his performance, but he started to show his skills while contributing in ball distribution, its almost confirmed for me he can become Xavi perfect assistant in midfield, but on the wing? Still need time to show how he can perform.
Messi: Dribbled when needed, passed when needed, burned just as much energy as needed. Another game with Messi impact and stamp, in brief he was a Messi, you have all the reasons to label him man of the match.
Henry: one of the best performances for him in the first half, covered for some miss passes by a huge effort all over the field, whenever he moved in the middle he created the danger, message received.
Bojan: you gave me a heart attack with that penalty shot! His moral is back, the game served him well.
Pedro: I like the pressure he made on defense and Goalkeeper, not a huge impact but another good experience.
Keita: helped controlling the game till the end, I wish if that shot found its way to where you wanted.
Guardiola: another master piece, the starting up, the tactics, and the substitutes.
I will apply Guardiola trick and save some energy for the coming events.

My five cents:
I thought playing Messi in the centre was a mistake (would have been a great opportunity for Henry to start there, I thought), but if you see how Messi gets away from his man in that first goal, then I think Guardiola just knew those two central defenders would have problems with a little dribbler like Messi and then you should say this was a brilliant move.
Busquets is such a beast... Should e careful with yellow cards though.
I don't think it was a total game at all actually. Defensively we didn't look very solid, when the 2-3 came anything could ahve happened.
Piqué should try to work on his pace, he's really slow. I think Valdes could do better at that free kick, he first moves to his left, shouldn't have done that, just keep your side save and hope he doesn't go in at the other end. Henry loses too many balls, he's too slow, should pass quicker. Caceres started worringly bad, but got better as the game went on. Marquez is to blame for that second goal, what is he doing? Or you head it well, or you don't touch it. Xavi wasn't really there like he used to at the start of the season, seems he's having a drop. Busquets needs to control himself more.
Just some remarks to counter the optimism... ;)
great game ... i have to say the man of the match is almost everyone , 5 goals in really good preformance . espcially that it came from the second choice players . and pepe with his key sub. perfect.... i can only complain on the 2 goals . but i wont complain because we won and that is exactly what we need . A good win to start moving forward on the coming battle's are going to be tough. now all the team is ready for next game and shakatar game is a vaction trip for the players to relax . good planning from pepe .
my choice for man of the match is Pepe Guardiola .
thank you...
refter I completely agree with your remarks about things to improve, there are even some more things we can light on that needed improvement.
But when i mentioned "Total football" I mean the football style played, its an expression used in football to describe a tactical structure based on switching positions, So i didnt mean it was "perfect football" but "Total football" tactical wise.
For more info about "Total football" :

I am aware it was a confusing Title though.
Addid a cent to pep Five cents, I think Guardiola Knew that their central back Polga - who was their best player i the game as i see it- is a good player in the man marking situation, so instead of handing henry for him, he used Messi to make the mess and Henry to do the knock out.
now for the first time, Sporting in the knock out stages.
Read the remarks of Guardiola about Messi's positiong: messi was supposed to move between their centre-backs and defensive midfielder plus (the guy thinks of everything): physically it's easier to play in the centre and so that way he wanted to protect Messi...
I was also kind of worried when they came back, certainly with messi not there anymore. But turned out fine. Good game, first of the group, but I don't think it tells us a lot for the future, this was after all a fairly easy group.
Couldn't watch the game yesterday, so i'm watching it now, 3-0 so far and what a game until now! Position switching done to perfect standards! Great game to play Gudi, Messi does exactly what is needed of him and then we rest him, Busquets stops everything, can't wait to see the rest.
Oh... What a misscall against Marquez.. Just happended as I'm writing this..
Oh and Pep you've got mail, bit delayed, but now it's there :)
Wauw.. Since when did we get a naughty word verification? "Skide" - To shit in Danish..
busquets man of the match? you got to be kidding me.
Ref just blew the whistle, what a game.. Perfect for the team with such a win before the december matches! Bojan had my heart skip a beat with that penalty, great to have him back to his old self again. Can't say anything than it's a perfect win for both the team and Guardiola, great diplay.
Performances like this are the stuff champions are made of.
They looked so cool, so relaxed, so clear minded, so professional!
Just like Pep was in the good 'ol days!
If they can only keep that mind during the next month, were gonna have an hell of a season!
I was most impressed by Pedro.
Such a lively performance!
i cant wait to see him in more games!
@Anonymous: I agree with Ramzi, imho he was MOM. What did he do wrong except the yellow card?
His calmness in the CL in his first season in a tactical demanding position like the DM spot is simply incredible. And boy, this guy has skill too!
“I do not think that the team depends on me. We have enough players and we all work together. It is not important who is on the pitch," Messi told the club's official website.
Credit the Humble guy, who on C.Ronaldo standards come forth in the world at most, after C.ronaldo the first the second and the third, I just wish if that clown played against Barcelona in the CL last year, so we see who is the best! he did? for real?
Another mistake from Valdés, another goal. Don't leave your place in such a set piece. Come on!
busquets passing is awful, he does a lot of mistakes, come on guys dont be blind.
I'm not sure that Valdes could have done anything to stop that perfect free kick. Sorry, but no keeper on the planet gets to a bending shot in the upper corner. That's just life in the big city. More egregious is that the free kick should never have occurred, given the faulty call by the ref.
Busquets had a great match. Hleb also played very well. Gudjohnsen, in the role he had today, was exceptional. And there isn't a lot of love here for Caceres, but there should be. Guardiola might have found his left back substitute.
A man of the match is difficult to pinpoint here. This was such a team victory.
If the goalkeeper had been in the right place, the goal should never have been scored. It's the only place he should have worried about.
Anyone who has been a keeper easily knows that.
Then we'll agree to disagree, InYourPlace. I have watched a lot of footy, and I have never seen a keeper stop a free kick placed as that one was. I've seen the kicks hit the woodwork, but I've never seen a keeper lay a glove on one.
It's not even about stopping it, Kxevin. Nobody knows what could have happened (sure goalkeepers have saved that type of shots). It's about Valdés moving to the centre first why he sure has no chance at all. He should have stayed at his position, then he would have been at least closer to the all, and maybe even saved it...
