Ladies and gentlemen! That's what a "Derby" means, nothing for granted, full of surprises and a THRILLER!
The team won the derby, how it happened is something we can discuss, but keep in mind this is something for history, records and pride! That's what will remain, in 75 games on that stadium, where it is unlikely they will be the field for any more derides, the two teams draw 25, espanyol won 24, and Barcelona won 26!
Ok that record thing is not for me so…to the game – knowing that I will not be a popular figure in some of the comments I will note here!
The selection. Now let's try to understand how pepe was thinking when he played Gudi instead of Keita, and Henry in Eto'o's place, just so we judge fairly, and not be emotionally driven. You know I was supporting the idea of playing the best you have for this game, but some people are whipping pepe too much for rotations, and demand a stable selection so.
Eto'o and Keita played almost all the games for Barcelona this season, are they exhausted? Not in this early stage of the season, but of course each and every game takes a part of their energy and lower down – by an inch – their fitness level, That's not going to be noticed now, but when the season reach the week 20 or so, something weird will start to happen.
Injury curse will strike the team (we will say we are unlucky for that), a sudden drop in form will become a fashion in the squad (and we will say that its probably a bad preseason preparation), and the team will lose its boosting energy the moment it is mostly needed, the last 100 meter of the season (and we will say those machineries have no winning mentality), there will be nothing related to luck, preseason preparations, or mentality! It's just they became human beings, who got exhausted.
The rotation is not something you start when you reach that point, because then it will be too late, you can't keep Henry, for example, on the bench for half of the season then when Eto'o cannot walk anymore, you smile in Henry's face hoping he feels pity for you and get into the field to do the Eto'o job till Eto'o feels better, it will be too late then! So if you want good games then I agree let's not rotate, but if you want a good season then, get used to this fact in football, titles need rotation.
Pepe in this game was an opportunist! He took advantage of Gudi's moral after that goal he scored, and tried to invest that before it is lost, so he used him in Keita's place, and he also got the advantage of Eto'o's two goals to bench him, how the hell?! Simply because when you bench Eto'o after a bad game, he will consider it as looking for something better, but when you bench him after a good game it means that he is becoming more and more valuable that you cant afford to lose.
Of course I would have preferred Keita over Gudi, and probably Eto'o over Henry but there is always another version of any story, we needed the team not to rotate for right reasons, but Pepe also had his reasons to rotate, keeping in mind that he is the one who follow the guys progress in training so, may be Keita and Eto'o fitness level were not the best to start this game, so I will not consider this one a foul committed by Pepe – there are other fouls to come in this long post.
Every thing else was as expected (gladly), the selection was the perfect one, the defense was working the way that suits the team most, even though Abidal made some runs forward, but he wasn't that bold left back we saw against betis, but more a centre back with Puyol and Pique, the defense line was the best Barcelona have – for now - because it is still long way far from meeting the expectations.
The defensive midfielder chosen by Pepe was Busquets, I mentioned before that Pepe needed to make sure if this guy mentality is ready for a derby, or else use Touré. He made a good game, but there are some stuff that made me feel Yaya was a better player for this game, he was not positioning himself as needed on the field, was more aggressive than needed that he was almost going to get himself an injury or a red card, but still he proves everyday that he is no doubt the future of Barcelona midfield.
It's not easy to dominate derby when you play on the "enemy" field, give the guys the best credit for that! They made Espanyol players ask for mercy from the start, the team starting from the midfield and forward were superb by all means, lot of movements, confidence performance. The system clicked perfectly, and I wonder those who don't like it still, why do they feel so?
I am not a guy fond with numerical ratings, and honestly I don't know how to turn players' roles to numbers so I will comment rather rate.
Valdés. I am not a hater, but when will you learn that "THIS" ball you punch back to the corner, you don't catch, this is not the first time, let's hope it's the last, if it's a foul or Puyol pushed the player on Valdés, this is something else, Valdés need to do his job right, he didn't on this one, but hey, that's the first in the season so far so, lets not be harsh. Knowing that the defense also played a role, Abidal marking, Puyol positioning, and Piqué clearance, it was destined to the net. Yet, The defense in general was well organized, in the first half.
Alves, dreaming of a Kanouté in the box! If Barcelona want this guy to be usefull, they better fix their forwards positioning for crosses. He is geting better and beter.
Piqué is proving every day being the best transfer for Barcelona this season, and the best defender in the squad at the moment, perfect positioning, a great vision building up the game from behind, and that confidence you need to become one of the best central backs in the game, in the second half he was outstanding, covering a wider space that two defenders will be able to close, and being calm on the ball no matter what.
Puyol added the leadership and experience needed for this game, he is still the guy for big games, and we can expect a promising partnership between experience and youth.
Abidal started to forget about the doubts on his quality and getting better and better, though it may need some time for his contribution to be noticed.
Busquets tried to prove being a solid bone, not a greenly buddy, and that's a good sign for the future, even if it caused some troubles, and injuries, from time to time.
Gudjohnsen was ok, but when I knew he is in the selection, I thought he will probably be a more threat in the box than Keita, but for my surprise Keita showed that he makes more runs to the box than Gudi in this game, he was not bad, but certainly not the performance that will grant him a place between the favorites to be selected in future, but again, as I mentioned once, name any player in another team who have Gudi quality and is welling to warm the bench for centuries, still working his best in training to get his opportunity, lets give the credit where needed.
Xavi, I said after last game, in his worst days this guy is good, or else he always perform perfectly, it was a very good game for the maestro, and Barcelona fans need to feel so lucky for having him.
Iniesta proving day after day that he is the left winger of the season, not only for Barcelona, started to become more and more adapted to this position, and he give the bonus of dropping back to the middle when the team lose the ball, certainly will be one of the best news for Barcelona this season.
Messi, honestly it's a great news he didn't get injured in this game, why am I saying that? Because records say that against Espanyol this is the thing you need to be worried about mostly. A typical Messi performance, causing fear with every touch and run and dribble, I noted after the Betis game that we can start counting his assists , and this is not going to be a boring job this season!
Henry, lot of determination, and taking in consideration all the pressure on his shoulders, not playing regularly, and the fact that he is used as a striker only on X-mass, he certainly offered the kind of displays that show he is capable to offer a lot for the team, now I always try not to be carried out, so of course he still needs a lot of form to become decisive, he played lot of wrong passes that if it would have been Abidal, guys here would have flied to Barcelona with knives and banned me out of this blog. But I am satisfied with this performance - FOR NOW!
Eto'o, thought being in after the game turned to become so "crowdy" in the box, but he had the determination needed and tried to open to the flanks, his understanding with Messi proved its worth again.
Bojan, one for the future, tried to create some threat from the left frank.
Keita added the physical value needed in the game especially when the team went all attacking.
Guardiola. The selection was good, the tactics were good, the substitutions, hm.. it worked again, and I know now I will not be a popular guy if I said the substitutions were not the best for me. He took the risk too early, getting out abidal less than ten minutes from the second half start, then playing with only two defenders for half an hour, after taking of even the defensive midfielder, that was too risky, and against some other teams who have a "pacey" striker on the bench, the game could have ended differently.
Some people may argue that the team needed a win, and here exactly where I will be less popular the most, being more dangerous has nothing to do with the number of forwards you put in the box, what actually happened is that the excess of forwards in the box made lot of crowd that the players lost any space needed to create threat, and it became impossible to penetrate from outside the area to cause surprise inside, knowing that this is the way Barcelona are scoring most of their goals so far, the last goal tells the whole story! It was the only time when Barcelona players faced Kameni one on one, and that was after Espanyol went forward, lost the ball, and there were only Messi and Eto'o penetrating the box when the penalty was whistled, in brief, we need to differentiate between dominance and efficiency.
The team really needs to train on positioning the players in the box when going forward, to avoid all the waste-less crosses we saw in the game, there has to be those who move to the far post, near post, and the penalty spot.
About the penalty decision, the referee did something wrong anyway. If it wasn't a penalty then he was wrong to whistle, if it was a penalty then he had to show a red card, now of course no Barcelona fan will be happy to suspend another espanyol player before their game against RM, but that's what written in the books, as far as I know.
Finally I wonder why Alves is not taking the free kicks more often.
I will not comment on that sector of Barcelona fans causing the big mess, it's not something to be proud of.

Ramzi, who most of you probably know from the comments section of this blog, has agreed to get some of his views posted on this blog every now and then.
This is his first contribution. Feel free to let us know what you think.
Great report Ramzi, I mostly agree with everything.
I'm starting to be a Ramzi fan :). I really like the way you see the games and I look forward for your next reports.
litle bit harsch on Valdés i think, i think you can see on the replay what i mean. Good job though Ramzi!
Like Krotto says, I don't think that Valdés is to blame. He is clearly out of balance before he touches the ball, so we don't know what he intended to do.
I can't imagine he really wanted to push that ball back into the pitch. I think that he's unbalanced, doesn't control his action anymore and therefore makes a movement he didn't intend to.
But otherwise good report, Ramzi!
Firstly, it's "lose", not "loose" :)
Then, I think it's pathetic how you defend Henry, he is a bad player and that's it. He has shown that ever since he came. Look at the game yesterday, he lost the ball almost everytime he got it, and when crosses came into the penalty area, he was always on his heels. Then he scored a unbelievably lucky goal after making a bad first touch on Xavi's ball. It's not enough, and I know you wrote that you're just satisfied with his performance for now, and that he will need to improve, but then I saw that he got over 10 % of the votes for man of the match... Makes me wonder how people think.
Stop defending him, he has been bad everytime he played and always cries out to the press and finds an excuse, like playing on the wing or being injured - but Eto'o has been playing as much on the wing as him, and had worse injuries!
But overall, I agree with most of your post, and I look forward to read you again, it's good to see some personal thoughts in the real posts once in a while too.
Also, thanks to Pep for this wonderful blog, great job. And while we're on the subject of Henry, I really liked the text you wrote about him before the season, very well written!
i agree with dave on the henry spot
man why are you always defending every barcelona player just because he is a barcelona player(i liked the thing you said about valdes).now if henry was playing in chelsea and was undeperforming like that wouldnt you say that he needed to leave?
think of shevchenko ,he was a legend at milan but sucked at chelsea, thats my point, why still defend henry ?
its been a year.also why defend always abidal?
defend players that help the team like guddy,i accept you points in this one he is one of the best sub players in the world (along with podolski and nani) and i really apreciate his spirit,he is always ready to help the team and gives his all in the field.
in the end it was a very good article ,nice read ,continue ^^
to all my respect to sammu, sammu wouldn't have even controled the ball. henry played well taking into consideration he didn't play in three games. nuff sed.
Of course after all the comments about the goal, I will have to see it again, may be there is something I didn't notice, but what I meant is that the technique he used to clear the ball was not right, regardless of the foul (and there is a foul), when I watched the goal, It seemed like he was trying to Catch the ball, raising both palms up, if he wanted to punch the ball over the post to the corner, he would have used one palm because that give his stretch a better balance, and thats what keepers do after they make a transition movement to the far post, even though it feels possible to catch, they just don't gamble, so what I meant is that he repeated that Liverpool mistake, so my call was that he do his job right so he take no responsibility at all for the goal, not doing so make him "partially" responsible, I don't know if the following sound harsh:
"Valdés need to do his job right, he didn't on this one, but hey, that's the first in the season so far so, lets not be harsh. Knowing that the defense also played a role, Abidal marking, Puyol positioning, and Piqué clearance, it was destined to the net."
But no doubt I will see the case again, and learn my lesson:)
About henry, I am not sure if you guys remember how much I opposed henry role as a left winger (As a first choice), but as a striker, I cant really consider him a failure till he play more often as a striker, the same as any player (like Yaya in betis game) when you don't play regularly you face a drop in form, last year he came from an injury, and was the best scorer for the team (I admit he scored mostly against weak teams) but still, what I saw is a guy who was trying to prove himself, and I mentioned his flops during the game, but I prefer to give him time, if eto need to rest then henry is the best option for now, so why starting a destructive cycle?
Regarding abidal, he is not a sexy player as Alves, but he is doing his job well as a Central back on the left, and i cant find in barcelona squad someone who is ready at the moment to do it better, or thats how I see it now, but time will tell.
Thanks for all the remarks and will be taken in consediration, I will leave the theater for you to express your thoughts and will do a feed back if needed at the end of discussion.
And Dave, with me you will pick lot of ZBELLINK MIZTAKEZ ;)
Good analyse Ramzi...
You are becoming our football expert analyser on this wonderful blog and I am glad that we have you here.
Més que un club!!!
Well Ramzi, first I must congratulate you on your promotion, you always seem to show another side to the story even when others dont think there is another side.
As for the match, I agree with you, anyone watching closely would have seen that it appeared Valdes tried to catch the ball instead of tipping it over; and even if he was off balance, or fouled, since he managed to touch the ball tipping would have been the better option.
About Henry, Ramzi didnt you find him drifting out to the left like his arsenal days? When he does this where is Iniesta to go, and what happens to the hole in the middle?
Maybe its just me but I think now that we're beginning to find winning ways, bojan needs to start against weaker teams. He seems low on confidence, and I hate the fact that he's dribbling like henry with that showing the ball to the defender a bit before trying to knock it past him and run. I liked when he played with more trickery, it made him unique.
Didnt the back three of Marquez, Pique and puyol work more effectively than when Abidal was thrown in the mix? I know he's your player but i still dont feel comfortable with him in the back line, but to be fair his performances have increased marginally, so I will withhold my knives....for now
Pep, thanks for the Blog, you're doing a great job.
First of all, his name is Pep, not Pepe. Second, Keita has been crap so far this season. Not saying that Gudi has been better though.
Yeah! nice work ramzi!
I would also like to say that i think many people are valdés-haters and think that is his fault everytime we lose. Sure he could punch tha ball to a corner, but i remember last season when he decided to punch the ball to a corner from a shot, the corner resulted in a goal. If he had punch the ball to a corner this time and they've scored on it, some people would have blamed him for that.
keep up the good work Ramzi
Nice work Ramzi and Pep. Good to see others pitching in..Ignore the comments about the spellings..
Keep up the good work!!
Mes que un blog indeed
Soon other people will also be able to get their thoughts out (or help out in another way) if they wish to do that. I asked Ramzi to start cause he seemed really locked in that comments section and it was time we let him out... ;)
And I don't think Ramzi minds if you indicate some spelling mistakes. The "loose" mistake (changed it in the meantime) came back three times, so then it's nice someone points it out (thanks Dave, also for remembering my post...). And be happy I'm already doing some editting on Ramzi's texts!
HENRY was is and will always be a great player!!
Hmm it is easy to blame VALDES for the goals we have conceded this season but I think alot of the goals resulted from very poor positioning of our defence especially when the other team launches a counter-attack. Probably casillas or cech would have been able to save the team but valdes, altho being a very good goalkeeper is not in the same class as them. For that simple reason the defence has to work extra hard to position themselves well and not get caught out. I think abidal in particular gets caught out quite alot.
Hmm KEITA in my opinion hasnt really given the team any real advantage in defence or attack. He is probably still adapting and I hope he proves me wrong soon enough.
MESSI's form has been really patchy this season and I think he needs to improve his passing and vision and also his finishing in front of goal.
XAVI and INIESTA are the two best players in our team and an injury to either of them will seriously dent our hope of being in the top two this season.
Nice analysis, Ramzi. Don't go getting all famous and forget about us at the Offside. :D And good move, Pep. His enthusiasm is infectious.
Over there, by the by, you'll find that our match report has Henry as man of the match. (Henry haters should stay clear, as they might die of apoplexy.)
He scored the goal, and snaked the killer pass to Messi that became the ball to Eto'o that set up the penalty.
He constantly tracked back on defense, stopping a dangerous late-match Espanyol counter. He created lots of space, and some excellent passes to attackers.
Let's not forget the play where Henry pushed the ball past two defenders then rocketed up the line. He held the ball as long as he could, but with no support....
Eto'o has indeed played almost as much on the wing as Henry, without Henry's goals or assist totals from there. A presence there does not equate to excellence.
There are matches in which Henry has been unalloyed, festering crap. This wasn't one of them. The man doesn't get a fair shake from some, in my opinion.
As far as the goal, it began with Abidal being out of position, which created the space for the cross-pitch pass. The cross goes in and Pique swipes at it instead of clearing it, man-style. Then Valdes is a punk about clearing his line, exacerbated by the fact that Puyol pushes the defender (who made the most of the shove) into him. Plenty of culpability.
Abidal has been rock-solid this season. Watch the last two matches again and note how many balls he wins, how many times he serves as a passing safety valve, how many attacks he's broken up.
Yes, in the past, he's been shit. So has everybody else on the back line. Every goal conceded last season wasn't Abidal's fault. Puyol was quite below-average yesterday, as a matter of fact, pushing ball after ball to Espanyol attackers in our end. If Abidal does that, he's being burned in effigy.
In Ramzi's defense, don't lambaste Abidal for past sins. This is a new season, and he's been very good so far. But if he sucks, call him on it. We sure will.
Always a delight to read your analysis, Ramzi.
My Goodnight feedback;)
I need to split it on two parts, the new posting style don't allow long posts, here we go...
- K-1 its my pleasure being around, keep in touch.
- barca aficionado, its henry style is to drift to the left pulling out CBs and then strike getting advantage of the space his move create, in Spain it will not work, because there are too many defenders to wish for spaces, as for iniesta, I think its an iniesta challenge to improve this piece of his attributes, to switch places and be able to run to the box and make a surprise there, its needed for Barcelona to shake defense, but lets keep in mind this is not an accomplished product yet and the team still have a lot to improve. Regarding Bojan, its not a secret that henry is the big figure for him, but I hope he don't try to copy henry style simply because he cant be a henry, physical and technically he is another kind of strikers, and lets hope he know it. as for defense, Payol played once as LBC this season, against a weak team so we cant judge based on that if he is good there, But i think when you play an attacking game with the threat of counter attacks in the mind, its not recommended to have two slow backs out of the three you pick for your defense (Marquez/payol), thats one of the things Abidal has, he has pace, beside he is left footed and thats important, because for payol (right footed) he can contain a left winger who cut inside, but he will have it difficult for a winger who open to the left and race to cross.
Part two:
- Anony if we want to be accurate, his name is neither pep not pepe;)
- Frekku I think Valdes is already used to play under the pressure of doubts, lets hope he earn more credits this season based on his performance.
- VJ Mes que un blog, no doubt.
- pep, they just dont know how much u r suffering with me lol
- KEMPE, Lets hope henry prove you right this season, that will be a great news for the team, no doubt he has whats needed, if the team needed what he have, if u know what I mean;)
- Riz, I agree.
- Henry knight, I mean Kxevin :) I am edicted to offside that my team is getting sick of me being offside all the time, you know you are too noise to be forgotten :) prepare the coffee, i am coming!
- sid, always delighted to know you are still around;)
I'll sleep and win some titles, in my dreams, then be back here tomorrow, Looking forward for your thoughts about the team, feel at home;)
Side note:
Of course I have no problem to be corrected for spelling mistakes, if I am open enough to be criticized for my football opinion (which is something I believe I know well) then obviously i will not take it bad if someone corrected my mistakes, which is a mixed of being always in a hurry, and the fact that English is not my mother tongue.
But I will make sure to make it harder for you to find things to correct;)
TO barca aficionado and not only..
maybe pep has something in mind and he needs the strikers to move left or right if you see closly you will find all types of system moves in the new barca!! every move has it's own point.. about the hole in the middle that lot of people worry about in every game i see exelent moves!! henry moves on left gudy goes second striker in the middle henry takes ta player and distoys the balance of the deffence.. eto'o does the some thing in the opposite side keita goes in the hole!! messi is olso a lot there to take advantage of that that's why you see him in the middle a lot.. there the DMC's have to focus on xavi iniesta and the others of the midfiled and is difficalt to stay near messi olso there there is only one player free to run after messi a CD but on the flangs there is a CD and the LB.. there is a plan and the boy's are sticking with it.. that is what i like most inthis team the coach speeks the players DO!!
PEP about the stats..
maybe you should put another colum with things like..
minites of play
starting in the first 11
something like that!!
the stats like this do not say anything realy..
i am confident that you will find out what is best and do it!!
mes que un club...
See my reaction in the stats post, Kempe.
