Bid for Arshavin rejected

Asked about the rumours linking Zenit Saint Petersburg forward and Russian international Andrei Arshavin (27) with a summer exit, Zenit general director Maxim Mitrofanov has said in an interview with Russian radio station Radio Zenit that Barcelona is the only club so far who has made a formal offer but that the Russian champions have rejected it and prefer to hold on to the player:

"There are currently a lot of rumours about a transfer of Andrei Arshavin to a west european club. Barcelona is the only club so far that has made an official approach. No other clubs, this means including Chelsea, have contacted us. The fate of the player should be resolved mid-July. Zenit's position is to keep our leading player although we will respect Andrei's wishes. But for the fee that Barcelona has proposed to us, we cannot sell Arshavin."

Asked about the rumours saying that Arshavin would fly to London to hold talks with Chelsea today (read more
here), Zenit spokesman Alexei Blinov said in an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti that the club was unaware of that: "We saw the news but we have no information about that. Arsahvin took normally part in the training session today."

Zenit manager Dick Advocaat has said to journalists today that it's not yet sure what will happen with the player: "There's no final decision taken yet whether he will remain at the club or not. I expect everything to be clear and decided upon two weeks from now."

i suggest barca should leave him alone..let him go to chelsea and destroy is career. now that he knows that chelsea also want him he is becoming arrogant

They can keep him then, or sell him to a side that is willing to overpay for him.

I expected this, frankly. Zenit is, like all lower-tier clubs, inclined to see interest from big clubs as a blank checkbook. We've seen it with Sao Paulo with Hernanes, and will probably see it again.

Frankly, I would rather spend more for a proven performer such as Hleb, as long as a club is going to hold us hostage.

But it's looking more and more as if we're going to be starting the season with Ronaldinho and Eto'o in the colors. All offers have been rebuffed (Arshavin, Hleb, Adebayor, etc). And Sunday is the big day.

I think their is still hope of getting ronaldinho out... frankly I wouldnt mind if eto'o stays and ronny goes.. Ronaldinho has been amazing for us but he has lost "it" and I dont think he can find "it" back ..in barcelona. Time for him to move on. Eto'o is an excellent footballer.. if we can keep him healthy he can be great again. His problem is that he lacks maturity and doesnt know when to shut up. Maybe pep can get a handle on him and his mouth but there is nothing pep can do for a player who looks like he has lost his love for the game and is drowning his sorrows in a pint of ice cream and a big plate of paella.

My point exactly, marc. Ronaldinho's problem is player-related while Eto'o's problem can be handled by a decisive coach. I truly believe that Pep fits the bill here because otherwise he has nothing to do in Barca's dressing room.

You guys still don't get it! By making Eto'o available to other clubs, that should be a clear signal that Barcelona have no intention of resigning him after his contract is up in two years. If you don't see him this summer then you have to pretty much keep him for TWO years until his contract expires because if you try to sell him next year, with only a year left on his contract you are going to get peanuts for him! It will be same situation like with Dos Santos all over again! Having to sell at a bargain basement price for fear of losing Eto'o completely for nothing a year later! Plus if you've been following Pep's "ultimatums" the #1thing on his agenda and to-do list is to change the culture of the team,- especially in the locker room. Keeping Eto'o, after you've made it known to him that you really didn't want him back is only going to make him more prickly and abbrasive! He'll be a ticking timebomb waiting to explode.

What bomb!!! Let's not exagorate things, eto'o always played for the club.. u can see it in his performance on the pitch, and if he stays, he must accept the concept of pep's new project. He's the best striker in the world for god's sake.. pls dont let him go.

I think I do get it anonymous...but I am being realistic.. the prospect of selling eto'o is looking increasingly bleak. No-one wants to spend the 25 million to sign him.. because no-one who has the money to sign him.. needs him. Inter has too may fowards. Arsenal is too cheap.. Milan is secretly broke and they want ronaldinho more. Man Utd.. dont really need him... bayern.. well eto'o would never go there... so who's going to buy him .. Real Madrid ??!!! ( haha).. At least there is some hope of selling ronaldinho to milan.. And quit worrying about how much we sell players for.. WE ARENT AJAX OR ARSENAL or SEVILLA. WE ARE NOT A FARM TEAM!!!! OUR PHILOSOPHY IS NOT TO DEVELOP PLAYERS TO SELL THEM TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER (not INTENTIONALLY ANYWAY). So get over it.. we sell cheap because we are a big club and thats the curse of a big club..

We sell players for few reasons.
A) They are no longer good enough
B) We no longer want them for various reasons.
C) They no longer want to be there.. and once a player says this to a club.. it is not in the clubs best interest to force them to stay.

If I am another big club I am not going to pay excessive amounts for your players.. because I know they are either on a phase of decline or you badly want to get rid of them.

if eto is willing to stay and accept the new concept of guardi maybe they can solve things out...eto is like a child that needs a babysitter..but when he is on the pitch he play with all his power even if he is playing a bad game..in ronis issue, i think he has lost interesst playing for barca..he knows that he is already a legen in barca and has won everything a player can win for his team...now he is looking for new challange
