Former Barcelona assistant coach Gerard van der Lem (55) has been appointed as assistant of new Panathinaikos manager Henk ten Cate (read more here). Van der Lem was dismissed in March as head coach of United Arab Emirates' club Al-Sharjah.
Gerard van der Lem was the first assistant of Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal between 1997 and 1999. The Dutchman arrived from Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam, where he also was Van Gaal's assistant. Two years later, Van der Lem left Barcelona to become manager of Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.
With Barcelona, Van der Lem won two consecutive Spanish league titles in 1998 and 1999, one European super cup in 1997 and one Spanish cup in 1998.
