Marquez wants renewal before returning home

Asked about his plans for the future and a possible renewal with Barcelona (read more here), Barcelona central defender and Mexican international Rafael Márquez (29), whose contract with Barcelona expires in 2010, has said in an interview with Mexican radio station Estadio W that he would like to continue at the club:

"I hope to be able to retire at Barcelona, that would be the best thing. But one never knows what will happen tomorrow. You can return home or get the chance to go and play in another country, you just don't know it.

My priority is to stay in Europe, trying to finish my career here. After that, I would be delighted to play a last competition with Atlas de Guadalajara and to say goodbye to my people, why not? I would like to retire by winning a trophy that we, atlistas, want so much."

He should get renewal. He's the best Barca defender at this moment.

Will be a tricky one. Piqué could take his role. Milito and Henrique will be there, so I think they could chose to take some cash. Will depend on the rest of the season, i guess.

That's a tough one. With Puyol still in the frame along with Pique and Caceres, and Henrique coming, I dunno. It would be a nice gesture by the club, for sure. He has played good football this season, but he's still a pace liability when teamed in the center with Puyol.

If he remains solidly consistent this season, he'll almost certainly get a renewal. Atletico was his best match by far this season.

His pace is indeed a problem. On the other hand, he's great at corners and he really adds something there. Piqué can also score that way but the others not really (on a regular basis).

Henrique also seems to be a good passer so if he leaves, you could have Henrique or Piqué as the "passing centre back" and Milito, Puyol or Caceres as the "defensive centre back".

Curious how the whole central defender issue will turn out next summer. Wouldn't put my money on it.

Maybe they plan to sell Touré and use him as a defensive midfielder and use Milito/Puyol/Caceres/Henrique as centrebacks. Or Caceres will be used as a leftback. Both scenarios leaves a spot open for Marquez.

IMO the best backline would be:
Abidal - Pique - Marquez - Alves

Abidal is solid in the defence. Pique provides the so needed height. Marquez passes and crosses is exceptional, he can hit Messi's foot from our goal. Alves will hopefully be Alves this season and for more to come.

Caceres, henrique and pique will help also as backwards/ DM.
The versatility of the players will help on defense as it did in midfield/up front.
I have no worries.

simonp. Sorry about the word you are "crazy/stupid" selling toure is the dumpest thing I've ever heard KEEP HIM! if you want to sell:
pinto,milito,sylvinho,(abidal),henry,guddi(keita).

IN:
1. LB
2. CM(Fabregas)
3. AM(Diego)
4. LW(Diego,di Maria,Aguero)

I would by Fabregas and Aguero
and sell:pinto,milito,sylvinho,henry,guddi,keita

Jester, I think that Simon was saying that the club might sell Yaya, rather than him personally advocating for the sale of Yaya.

I too have mentioned the possibility of Yaya being used plus cash to lure some Guardiola-loved classic striker.

I can't see using Marquez as a defensive mid when we have Busquets and Keita in the house.

Marquez as DM won't happen in my opinion, we have other guys there now.

And Touré... Another tricky one if things don't change! One month ago, no one would have thought we could even discuss an exit. Most agreed last season he was our best man, simple as that. But things have dramatically changed since then. Let's wait for the rest of the season.
