British tabloid The Sunday Mirror claims that Manchester City has tried to sign Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (30) earlier this week.
The English Premier League club reportedly moved for Gudjohnsen three days ago but the player would have rejected the bid because he would be be in advanced negotiations with French league club AS Monaco.
Three other English clubs, namely Portsmouth, West Ham United and Stoke City are also believed to have tried to sign Gudjohnsen, who would nevertheless already have agreed to join Monaco before the summer transfer market ends tomorrow (read more here).

Gudjohnsen hints at West Ham move
British tabloid The Daily Star claims that Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (30) is likely to return to the English Premier League (read more here).
Barcelona would have put Gudjohnsen for sale and the player is reportedly keen on going back to England. Several English clubs are said to be interested, with Portsmouth eyening him as a possible replacement for Crouch and Fulham being willing to move if the price is right.
Gudjohnsen is nevertheless quoted by the tabloid as hinting that he would like to join West Ham: "Returning to England is probably inevitable. There is a lot of interest from the Premier League. I had a great time with Chelsea and Gianfranco and I know the game inside out. I know I would adapt easily to the football there."

Belhadj confirms Barcelona offer
Asked about the rumours that Barcelona made him an offer during the winter transfer market (readmore here), Portsmouth left back defender and Algerian international Nadir Belhadj (26) has reconfirmed in an interview with Algerian sports paper Le Buteur that Barcelona wanted to sign him:
"I can confirm that Barça made an offer and I was very happy about it. I nevertheless didn't want to take the risk of living the same experience I had at Lyon, when I stayed on the bench. And I also wasn't interested in a loan deal of only six months.
I hope to join Barça one day, to play and to be important. I have what it takes to play there. When you're playing with those great players, I'm sure your own game gets better. But I didn't want to be a luxury back-up, like I was at Lyon. If Barça would have shown interest two-three years ago, I would have accepted, but now I'm again playing after a period in which I didn't play for several months. I don't want to re-live those bad times. And even on a personal level, moving another time and again starting a new life, it would have been difficult.
The offer of Barcelona made me happy because it proved that my talent is recognized at the highest level. That gives my morale a boost and encourages me to work even harder. I hope that one day I will play at a club like that. I'm not going crazy but I honestly think that I have the qualities to play in such a team. Look at Daniel Alves on the right: it's a right back defender but he doesn't defend. Why? Because Barça has always the ball (laughs)! It's a great player and he has the same qualities as myself. He can attack well, he can centre."

Barcelona wanted Belhadj to replace Sylvinho
Asked about the rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona (read more here), Portsmouth left back defender and Algerian international Nadir Belhadj (26) has unconfirmedly said in an interview with French sports paper Aujourd'hui Sport that Barcelona has shown interest for him before he signed a permanent deal with the English club:
"My agent was contacted by Barcelona during the winter transfer window. They wanted to prepare for the departure of Sylvinho, and Abidal was injured. It was very attractive, but I want to play. I don't want to experience a substitute situation again. I suffered at Lyon. It made me mad when Fabio Grosso was not good, but remained in the starting eleven. I could do my best, but that didn't change anything."

Barcelona still wants Portsmouth left back Belhadj
British tabloid The Daily Mirror claims that Barcelona is still interested in Portsmouth left back defender and Algerian international Nadir Belhadj (26) (read more here).
Barcelona scouts would have watched Belhadj during last week's Uefa cup game between Portsmouth and AC Milan and the club would now be ready to make a bid for the Algerian full back.
Belhadj joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan last summer when French club Lens, which he joined from Olympique Lyon in January, got relegated to the second division. Portsmouth would want to sign the defender permanently for 4,5 million euro°.

Catalan radio station Catalunya Ràdio claims that Barcelona has been considering to sign Portsmouth left back defender and Algerian international Nadir Belhadj (26) in January.
If Barcelona left back Abidal would have had to undergo surgery, Barcelona wanted to sign a substitute during the winter transfer window. With Abidal recovering well, a transfer wouldn't be an option anymore.
Belhadj joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan last summer when French club Lens, which he joined from French champions Olympique Lyon in January, got relegated to the second division.

Gudjohnsen likely to leave this summer
Asked about the rumours linking Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29) with English Premier League clubs Aston Villa, Manchester City, West Ham and Portsmouth, the player's agent and father Arnor Gudjohnsen has said in an interview with British television channel Sky Sports that the player will probably leave Barcelona and would be interested in a move back to England:
"I have seen some speculation about Eidur and Aston Villa, but I don't think he was very keen on that. I think if he was to return to England he would prefer to go to London or Manchester rather than Birmingham. There are a few clubs interested, but there is nothing serious at the moment. I think he will leave Barcelona and he is keeping his options open at present."

Portsmouth favourites to sign Gudjohnsen
British tabloid The Sunday Express claims that Portsouth has made Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29) their top transfer target after the club gave up on signing Liverpool forward Peter Crouch as both English clubs are unable to agree on a transfer fee.
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, who confirmed the interest in Gudjohnsen a few weeks ago (read more here), would be willing to pay 6,5 million euro° for the Icelandic striker.
With Barcelona ready to let the player go the decision over where his future now lies appears to be with Gudjohnsen, as West Ham United is also following the player and a number of other clubs are likely to be interested too. However, it is thought that Portsmouth’s ability to offer European football make them slight favourites to sign Gudjohnsen.
Catalan sports paper Sport says that Gudjohnsen isn't part of the plans of new Barcelona manager Josep Guardiola. But although the player, whose contract with Barcelona expires in 2010, can leave this summer, the club wants to receive a decent fee for him and is ready to organize a bid race between the interested English Premier League clubs.

Different negotiations on Gudjohnsen ongoing
Catalan sports paper Sport claims that during his stay in London last Friday, Barcelona sports vice president Marc Ingla met also with an intermediary who is looking for an English club that wants to transfer Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29) to discuss the situation.
The paper claims that Greek club Panathinaikos, whose new manager Henk ten Cate is interested in Gudjohnsen (read more here), would have made Barcelona a first formal offer of 5 million euro° for the Icelandic striker.

Portsmouth manager confirms Gudjohnsen interest
British local newspaper The News claims that English Premier League club Portsmouth is considering to launch a bid for Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29) if the negotiations with Liverpool on England international Peter Crouch would fail (read more here). Gudjohnsen is thought to be available for a transfer fee of around 5 million euro°.
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp said to the paper that Gudjohnsen could be an option: "Eidur is a good player, a proper player. It does look like he is leaving Barcelona. If that's the case he'd definitely be the type of player we'd be interested in. He's someone I know and he's good friends with my son Jamie. He's a good lad and a top player."
Asked about the matter, the player's agent and father Arnor Gudjohnsen confirmed the interest to British sports site Setanta Sports and said that a return to the Premier League is a serious option for his son although nothing is certain at this moment: "I am a little bit aware of the Portsmouth interest, it was there in January as well. Eidur is not rushing into anything at the moment, we haven’t actually been speaking to any clubs, we just know about interest in him from a few clubs.
I think Eidur is definitely looking at options to maybe go away from Barcelona. It is not definite, but football-wise he has to ask himself a few questions. Is it better for him to leave the club or to stay? I think England is strongly in the picture because he knows English football and has been there for a long time."

Portsmouth and Newcastle in race for Gudjohnsen
British tabloid The Sun claims that English premier League clubs Portsmouth and Newcastle are interested to sign Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29).
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has made Gudjohnsen, together with Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, his top transfer target for the coming transfer window, something that is also claimed by British tabloid The Daily Mirror. But Newcastle head coach Kevin Keegan has apparently done the same (read more here).
Barcelona is said to be willing to accept an offer of 6 million euro° for Gudjohnsen, who arrived in Barcelona from Chelsea in the summer of 2006 and whose contract expires in 2010.
