Ex-Barça: Schuster dismissed by Real Madrid

Former Barcelona midfielder Bernd Schuster (48) has been dismissed yesterday as manager of Real Madrid, the club he joined in the summer of 2007 after leaving Spanish first division club Getafe.

Arriving in 1980 from German club Köln, Bernd Schuster played eight seasons for Barcelona. In the summer of 1988 he left for Real Madrid.

With Barcelona, Schuster won one Spanish league in 1985, three Spanish cups in 1981, 1983 and 1988, two Spanish league cups in 1983 and 1986, one Spanish super cup in 1983 and one European cup winners' cup in 1982.

Gudjohnsen top target for Bundesliga newcomer

German tabloid Express claims that Barcelona attacker and Iceland international Eidur Gudjohnsen (29), whose contract with Barcelona expires in 2010, is high on the wish list of FC Köln manager Christoph Daum.

Köln will play again in the Bundesliga next season and Daum wants to bring in experienced players. He would have urged his club to find the money necessary to do that. The manager didn't want to comment on the rumour yesterday: "I don't make public statements about possible transfers."

Köln sports director Michael Meier said that the club is ready to invest: "A deal is not close. But it's clear we have never avoided to take risks in the past and we won't change that attitude in the future."
