Brazilian defender Alex Silva high on list

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona is interested in São Paulo central defender and Brazilian international Alex Silva (23). A deal would be very close.

Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain, who is in Brazil today, could close a package deal including Alex Silva and São Paulo attacking midfielder Hernanes (read more here). Barcelona would pay São Paulo 25 million euro° for both players.

Like Hernanes, Alex Silva would already have reached an agreement with Barcelona on the personal terms: the Brazilian defender would sign a four-year contract worth 2 million euro plus incentives a year. Alex Silva, who has played some months for French club Rennes in 2005, is a younger brother of Benfica central defender Luisão.

Hmmm, never heard of this guy. Had at least heard of Hernanes and all of his potential prior to our public interest in him. Anybody heard of this defender?

Alex Silva is the younger brother of Luisao (Benfica). Alex Silva is tall at 6'4 and athletic. He is a very good aerial threat on set pieces.

I heard good things about him, he would be some kind of new Jaap Stam. But do we need another central defender?

are we only planing to defend.we buy mainly defenders recently.what is going on???am happy we will have good defence but we need a real winger incase R10 leaves.

I have a feeling Ronnie might stay. Of the 3 supposedly leaving Pep left the door open for Ronnie to stay. If he chooses to sort his life and his career out then i would love for him to stay. I still think he can be the best in the world again and I believe Pep is a strong enough character to change Ronnies lazy habits.

Why another central defender!! We have milito, puyi, pique, caceres and marquez. 5 players on 2 places. And if he wants to play marquez in the defensive midfieler, we have toure and keita there, so thats 3 players on one place. We need attacking players now. Barcelona had a problem scoring goals last season. We now have bojan, henry and messi, and geovina ronnie and eto'o leaving!! Attacking players should be the main priority!! Pep said he wanted to play with 3 players upp front, we'll then we need at least 2 more attacking players.

And what if barca is planing to get this defender so they use cacers with silvinho as left backwards, then offering abidal in an exchange+cash package to lyon getting benzema? how would that sound?

that would be okey, but we still need a left winger!! And aidal is a much better left-back then caceres and sylvinho.. He has not reached his full potesial, and i think he will this season

This is a good buy. Young, fast, tall and a real threat on set pieces. Don't forget that Guardiola is a fan of the defense, in that he understands that a solid back line means you can then attack with impunity.

We're pretty well set on the attack, even if Eto'o, Deco and Ronaldinho leave. If our defense was solid last season, we'd probably have had two pieces of silver, maybe all three.

The back line was a mess and we were vulnerable to the counter. This summer's signings fix all that. Note that all are fast, as well. Puyol isn't the man he once was. Surround him with young, fast defenders and he doesn't have to cover for guys who are also getting to be a step slow (Thuram, Milito, Marquez, etc). Nice moves.

DiarioSport is now saying the deal is done, for 19 million pounds for Silva and Hernanes. Great news, if it's true.

The other thing this addresses is depth, and the fact that Puyol isn't going to be the man forever. Who knows how Milito's knee will come back. I'd take a back line of Abidal, Alves, Caceres and Puyol all day. Any of them get injured, and Pique and Silva come in.

Very smart.

I agree with the comments above, we need a solid, pacy, tall defence and this purchase would complete our defensive signings for the season. Attackers are going to be harder and more expensive to land so lets complete all the defensive signings and then concentrate on the attackers. None of which will happen till after the Euros anwyays!!

I agree that abidal may be more useful now after buying alvis, who move a lot forward so from the left back abidal can form with the other 2 defenders a three central defenders line when alvis go forward, that will keep defence secure and make abidal work with what he know mostly(defence) and limit his need to attack where he lack flair, that sound good deffensively but it may not sound as good offensively because there will b no balance between right flank(messi, alvis) and left flank(unknown) unless if one of the midfielders worked closer to left winger when the team go forward.but ithink getting benzima in a deal(abidal+crosas+cash)will open lot of options and save mony for a winger and may be young LB with potentials...I still feel vargas was a player we missed to snap..

This article says, Sport.es reported we're going for Hernanes AND Silva for about 25 Mio. and there are only minor details to be negotiated.

I don't know, I haven't found any news on Sport.es regarding this?!
Am I blind or is TF writing some weird stuff again?

Kxevin, that was beautifully articulated. I couldn't add anything more to what you said without sounding redundant.

I will just briefly add I wonder if this does anything to change Abidal's status with the club? Will the addition of another defender mean his departure from the club is imminent? Just something to ponder.

I hope Abidal stays. He's much more valuable when he doesn't have to scramble. He was much more stable at Lyon because in the Ligue 1 context, their back line was really, really stable. So all he had to do was roam the wing and throw in the occasional wacky cross.

For us, he was drifting toward the center, covering counters and whatnot, which made him vulnerable to his deficiencies, which are tackling from front, behind, side....pretty much anywhere.

The more stable the back line, the better Abidal looks.

I read somewhere that left wing was among our needs. Lyon wants Abidal back. But I don't know that we'd be able to find someone with that kinds of pace and ability this late in the game. I think if Abidal were in play, you'd have seen his name come up more.

Though after yesterday....
