Renewal negotiations with Busquets have started

Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain met yesterday afternoon with Josep Maria Orobitg, the agent of Barcelona defensive midfielder and Spanish youth international Sergio Busquets (20) to start the negotaions about a contract renewal.

Several media claim that Busquets, whose current contract expires next summer, has been offered a four-year deal consisting of a fixed salary plus incentives. Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona has offered a very low fixed part, that would be comparable to a B-team contract, with high incentives.

After the two-hour meeting, Orobitg told journalists that an agreement isn't even close at this point: "This was a first contact, we're not anywhere near a deal. I've listened to the proposal that, to my judgment, clearly isn't high enough and I've informed my client about it. Sergio of course deserves far more than a B-team contract. Several clubs are interested but he wishes to stay with Barcelona. So I'll soon meet again with Txiki Begiristain. The negotiations will continue next week."

French football site More Foot meanwhile claims that both English Premier League club Arsenal and Italian club Juventus are interested in Busquets.

Ok lets put some perspective into this. Busquets has played a total of what? 10 games max for us so far, how on earth can his agent be demanding a high salary. He must prove himself over the season if he wants a large contract. Having said that, if barca really is thinking of getting rid of yaya doesnt Txiki thing that he should offer the replacement player more than a B-team contract? But what do I know, i'm just a fan.

I'm with barca4life. Busquets is definitely for the future. The danger here is in holding the team hostage based on a favorite son, coach favorite, etc.

This is also the good time for these talks. If he screws up, we still have Yaya.

My guess is that things will go pretty smoothly, as they did with Krkic.

Fact is, he would'nt have even been in the first team. He did'nt get promoted, he's still supposed to be with Barca Athletic, Pep just ramdomley gave him a chance, and now he's talking about a first teamer salary and moving to other clubs Etc Etc. Piss off Sergi Buscuits.

He should respect the club but the club should also respect him. Offering a B-team contract (if that's the case) is ridiculous from Barcelona's part, even with high incentives. That's a slap in his face.

It's clear he has a great future ahead, he should be paid for what he's worth. Which is quite a lot.
