Eto'o prefers to stay

Asked about the rumours linking him with a summer move to Tottenham or Inter Milan, Barcelona forward and Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o (27) has said in an interview with Cameroonian television station CRTV that his first option still is to stay with Barcelona:

"Tottenham, and I hope the English fans will forgive me, are a club in mid-table and I need more. I cannot exclude the option of Inter, but I want to repeat that I still feel I am a Barcelona player and don't feel pressured to leave. I will think about my situation during the coming weeks. I'm aware of all the rumours surrounding my future but I insist that I have a contract with Barcelona until 2010 and that I feel great at the club."

Well that's an unpredictable comment from Eto'o. I thought he gonna leave barca very soon.

Yep, hopefully we've been all wrong :)

Laporta, Txiki and Pep, how much proof do you need? Samu is a culé and wants to stay. Don't force him out of the club, it will be a huge mistake.

Please stay Eto'o, we all need you!!!!

A good chat with Guardiola would do!

There are so much culés out there who don't want him to leave.

We should start a "Vote of confidence in Samuel Eto'o" FFS!

:D

Is it true that his injury will affect his performance?? anyway barca shouldn't let him go, you cant let a player with his age and skills go that easy, even though they'll definitly need to bring another striker beside him.

Keep him, get rid of Henry and maybe buy Güiza, wouldn'b be that expensive, good backup and has scored his fair share of goals over the last years, not to meantion his sensational 2007-2008 season.

Please please stay samu... wouldn't understand if txiki or laporta would sell him.. great player, with great attitudes, can't find any other player who could substitude samu.. would be very dissapointed if he leaves.

Eto'o is forcing himself out of the club with his behavior. If he's a team player, no way is he for sale. He pours in goals, creates space and does all the things that a great striker can do. But if he's toxic elsewhere, the team can't keep him. Fewer goals and less stress is a no-brainer for our management, and Guardiola is part of that management.

If anything, we might wind up keeping him this upcoming season, then selling him before we lose him on a free transfer in 2010. The value to selling him now is that we aren't backed into a corner. If you have to sell a player, as we did with Dos Santos, you don't get as much as if you don't need to sell that same player.

Somebody will get a bargain in Mancini because Roma have to sell him, since this is the last year of his contract. Loyalties or no, the best time to sell a player is a year before the final year of his contract, unless you love him and want to keep him. That clearly isn't the case with Eto'o.

I wouldn't have titled the post "Eto'o prefers to stay" I heard the full interview and he admitted he could leave too. He mentioned he could stay to make clear everything may happen yet.

Btw Pep, thanks for the fantastic blog and the effort of updating the bunch of information about Barcelona transfers.

Well at least he's being brutally honest about his feelings towards Tottenham. I wouldn't put much stock into what he said though because history has shown that he's so unpredictable, and I wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if tomorrow he came out and demanded a move from the club. His comments are like trade winds - they can blow in any direction from one day to the next....Spot on comment from one of the commenators above. IF Barcelona are considering selling Eto'o in the slightest bit (which it seems like they are posturing since they are allowing other teams to talk to him) they have to do it now! His value will never be higher than it is right now. And if Barca wait till next year they will literally be at Eto'o's mercy because he can simply play out the season and leave for free and Barca will have nothing left to show in return. Barcelona have to tread very carefully and delicately on this one.

Good remark by Kxevin, so actually the question is not: "sell or keep?" but "sell or renew?".

Soriano said ealier this year that you have to decide what you're gonna do with a player two years before the contract expires, so guess they are in the process of deciding. Or they aleady have...

Thanks Eduard. And maybe "Eto'o wouldn't mind to stay" or "Eto'o doesn't want to leave" would have been better. Besides the English summaries I only read a French transcript when I posted it.
